We don't all have the space for a nine-foot grand piano, or the dosh. The thing about a keyboard is that it's fairly easy to install. You don't need to knock a wall out to get it inside.
A nine-foot grand piano is meant for a concert hall, not for home use. You should have enough space for a five-foot grand piano. It's lesser space than what a double-sized bed takes up in a bedroom.

We had lockdown in Europe for much of the past year, so I used the time to learn to play the piano for two hours a day. I ordered a keyboard online and the Alfred piano book for beginners. I probably make all sorts of mistakes that would give any half-decent teacher a seizure, but I'm now on to Book 2 for intermediate players. I can sight read music slowly now. I think it's kept me kinda sane during a year of government enforced confinement. A keyboard/piano is no longer a big black box it's a world of possibilities.

@nedludd3641 At 40 in looking for my first piano. I almost bought a Yamaha brand. I returned an unknown brand piano recently. Now I'm considering a midi keyboard. Mainly because of all the music creation options of music from a midi.
I began my piano journey just over a year ago before the pandemic hit. As a retired person with a fixed income and limited space but a great desire to learn, I could never have gotten an acoustic instrument. I have the experience of learning on my teacher’s beautiful restored 100 year old Steinway grand, but even that has been out the window with the pandemic. I have been taking my lessons on Zoom and practice twice a day using Faber Piano Adventures for Adults on my Yamaha P515 and it is great. No it isn’t a “real” piano and it isn’t a top digital or hybrid piano but it gives me what I need sounds good to my ears and has a good feel.I also like the fact that it needs no maintenance.

I'm a beginner. I'm learning on a keyboard. A bit higher end than most may want to start on. I may one day be as good as any virtuosic but that's not really my goal. My goal is to learn to be the best I can be. What my instrument will help me achieve. If and when I upgrade. It may well be a very good upright quality piano and just take my keyboard to where ever. It can be moved easily. Depends on your budget. Thing is start on a piano with at the least 61 keys. 88 keys are better buy more expensive. But starting is the hardest thing in the beginning. Make sure you have head phones for privacy. Metronome and a phone tablet or laptop and internet to do online course. Make sure the course will teach music theory so you understand music and teaches you music reading. No use trying to play if you can't read the music you want to play. Playing by ear is possible, but most people don't have a natural ear for this type of playing. If you goal is to play all genre then your going to need to read music. This is my goal. To fully understand how to play what ever music I would like to play or someone with like to hear.
Thing is I want to have fun doing it. It's going to take work to get my goals achieved and I'm ready for the challenge.
So according to him, everyone should start with a million-dollar Grand piano.
Something I've always wondered though is, is piano a style and an instrument? When I think keyboard lessons it's chords on the left and melody on the right - whereas piano I think to be proper sheet music stuff. So would is be right to say you can 'play keyboard' on a piano? Or is this just a stereotype I've made up.
I'm thinking of offering piano lessons but wondering if I should call it keyboard lessons because I only play chords and melody; but I tend to arpeggiate the chords into a scale to make it sound more grand, and I do a lot of improv too. But it's only chords on the left regardless.
You should have made a distinction between digital Piano and keyboard.
I bought a keyboard to learn piano, and although the theory is the same, the feel and sound is not. Pianos are far more weighty, while keyboards are springy. Personally I found the springy keys of a keyboard very off putting and returned it. But the sound, it sounds dumb to say but the keyboard sounds very robotic. Like you *know* it's a keyboard. It sounds almost nothing like an actual piano and if you don't like your instrument you won't practice with it. Buy something you like, even if it costs a little more. And always go to a music store to try the keys before throwing a lot of money into it.
Robotic? No, good keyboards certainly do not sound robotic, and even you can tie it with a PC with Kontakt on it to play various instruments

I wouldn’t think so. I think as long as its weighted touch sensitive keys it shouldn’t matter. Of course im not knowledgeable on pianos/music but thats my guess.
