This movie was so flipping good! From its cinematography, Danny Elfman's haunting score, to the stellar acting by Johnny Depp, Christopher Walken, Christina Ricci and Miranda Richardson, this story blends all the wonderful elements of horror, romance and fantasy wrapped in a stunningly dream-like atmosphere.

Fun Fact: Johnny Depp adopted Goldeneye, the horse that played Gunpowder, Ichabod Crane's horse in this film, when he heard it was going to be put down.
Action Actor Fact: Johnny Depp did all of his own stunts for the final scene where he is dragged by the horse. He had bullet-proof clothing underneath his wardrobe.
Historical Fact: Washington Irving claimed that Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel were real people. Ichabod Crane was based on Colonel Ichabod Bennet Crane, who was born in 1787 and fought in the War Of 1812. Washington Irving and Colonel Ichabod Crane had met in 1814 at Fort Pike located on Lake Ontario in Sackets Harbor, New York.

They are real. Look into it more. It's based on people who lived in the real at the time. Just not the same names.

The guy playing the Headless Horseman (sans head) was none other than Ray Park, the guy who played Darth Maul in the Phantom Menace. That's why the choreography in the fight scenes was so good. Kinda funny that there was another actor in this who was also in TPM (Ian McDiarmid - Palpatine).
Actually, it was Christopher Walken who played the Horseman throughout.

Something about Johnny Depp that makes him even more amazing to me is that he doesn’t take himself at all seriously as an actor. He’s physically beautiful but he’s more than willing to act the fool. I’ve heard it said that Johnny Depp is a character actor trapped in a leading man’s body and I think that is so true. I read that when Robin Williams was asked if there was any actor that he wanted to work with but hadn’t yet, he immediately named Johnny Depp. Wouldn’t that have been wonderful??! He said that Depp was absolutely fearless as far as comedy was concerned…high praise from a master. High praise, indeed!!!

I'll never forget how scared i was watching this film in theaters the first time as a kid, now i consider it one of my favorite Halloween films.
The headless horseman was played by Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars The Phantom Menace), who wore a green screen mask over his head so that it could be digitally removed in post-production. The collar of the costume was also CG to help mask the transition between the practical costume and digital head removal.
All of the severed heads were practical props as well. They spent a massive part of the budget to make sure each severed head matched its actor in great detail. I don't remember which cast member it was, but one of them was allowed to keep their head, which they then used to traumatize their wife at home, by placing it in the fridge.
I’ve seen this movie before. But just realized that Francis Ford Coppola is a producer. This movie is stacked, even behind the scenes.
If I'm not mistaken this was one of the very first movies to be color graded digitally, which made it's look stand out a lot when it was released. Still looks awesome, Burton knows what he likes.
Growing up a always loved 'The Tale of the Headless Horseman'. I was so happy to see it brought to life so brilliantly by Tim Burton with Ichabod Crane played by the multi- talented, Johnny Depp.Now, we have the classic tale of Sleepy Hollow to haunt are dreams each and every Halloween.

Great reaction! I was born, raised, and still currently live in Sleepy Hollow, NY. If you ever find yourself in NYC just drive north 20-30 min and you can visit. You can go to the cemetery where you’ll find the graves of the real characters in the story. We used to take school field trips to the sites in the story and my favorite was always Katrina Van Tassel’s estate that’s still intact and kept in mint condition. Anyway, glad yall love my towns folklore 👌🏼

Some trivia time…
The scene’s where Ichabod is being dragged behind the carriage, the Headless Horseman was… great action sequences. They were all filmed on a strip of a set, so basically, it’s a set of a part of a road. It was not very long. All of the trees were decorated and set. What you saw was the genius of Tim Burton and the Cinematographer. He used so many inventive ways to use camera angles to create the entire sequence. You would never know you are seeing the same strip of a set, using the coach, horses, everything. It looks like a real dirt road that went on for miles! Also, when Johnny Depp was being dragged, he was running a fever and was sick but he knew they needed to get the shots so he pushed on ahead.
Johnny always keeps one thing from each movie he does. With this film, he kept the Iron Madden that Lisa Marie was killed in.
The complete town was built for this film. AMAZING Art/Set decorations! After the filming, the crew has to put the whole area back to the way it was before they started building the sets. The people in the area asked them to keep the Windmill, but legally they couldn’t.
A LOT of the imagery you saw from Burton’s direction came from Disney’s “Ichabod and Mr. Toad”. It’s a shortened cartoon that tells the same tale. The shot where Brom Bones was acting as if he was the Headless Horseman to scare Ichabod is straight from Disney. The Horseman holding a flaming, carved pumpkin and throwing it at Ichabod’s head? From Disney.
The idea of throwing a flaming pumpkin and hitting his prey is from Washington Irving. Whoever gets hit goes into a coma and dies. If they don’t die, they awaken with a “super” power.
A friend of mine wrote a trilogy of books called, “Rise Headless and Ride: The Jason Crane Series”. It is set in today with Jason, who is the Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grandson of Ichabod Crane. His parents are dead, so he lives with his Granny. She moves them Sleepy Hollow where Jason has to go to school with the bully football player who is the Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great Grandson of Brom Bones. My friend moved to Sleepy Hollow to get everything correct, the names of the streets, where building are, where the bridge is, etc. He was given special permission to have access to the Historical Society that over sees all of Washington Irving’s life. He wrote me into book Three and HE DIDN’T KILL ME OFF!! My character got to live on!
He has now moved to Salem. He is taking the same characters and is writing of the Witch Trials.

Little Known Fact about the Headless Horseman, it's actuall MUCH older than the War For Independence... True, the Story of Icabad Crane and the Headless Horseman came from there and then, but the mythology of the Headless Horseman dates back even farther to old Celtics myths. Irish and Danish mythology has the "Dullahan” also known then as “Gan Ceann". It's HOW the Headless Horseman from Sleepy Hollow rose back up to Search for his head. Fun Facts.
Something in the behind the scenes on the DVD is that every single time Johnny Depp had blood sprayed on him, Tim Burton kept doing more takes saying 'more blood'. He would keep doing this just to see Johnny covered in more blood so he could laugh at him.

It was originally going to be a slasher film involving teenagers getting stranded in Sleepy Hollow and encountering someone dressed like the Headless Horseman but later learn it's the REAL Headless Horseman.
Before Johnny Depp was cast as Ichabod Crane, Daniel Day Lewis, Liam Neeson and Leonardo DiCaprio were considered for the role.
Marlon Brando was going to play the Headless Horseman but was replaced by Christopher Walken.
Winona Ryder was considered to play Katrina Van Tassel until Christina Ricci was cast.

It's very Gothic feel about it. If you love this, you should check out 1992 Bram Stoker's Dracula. It had almost the same Gothic feel too. It's an almost faithful adaptation to the novel. Really creepy too.
Kenneth Branaugh's Frankenstein is also a great gothic horror

He is legendary! His stunts in this and in Phantom Menace have left a mark for sure!
I love the way Miranda Richardson holds her arms up on her dress towards the end when it’s revealed she’s still alive.
I grew up in the Bronx and my cousin lived in Tarrytown and every halloween, I'd drive over to her house and we would drive all around the roads and fields of Sleepy Hollow...but never met the headless horseman...It was just fun!
This is the second time Johnny Depp played this character. The first was in a '95 movie called Dead Man. Same story style where a young man moves from the East Coast to the Wild West for a job and ends up an outlaw. Complete fish-out-of-water story where he's a coward at the beginning and transforms at the end. You can totally see what Depp took from the character and planted in Sleepy Hollow.

Danny Elfman is definitely one of my favorite composers but I think he's best work is a non Tim Burton movie called Black Beauty from 1994. The music is so beautiful and moving. I cry every time I watch that film.
The Headless horse man in both this movie & the original novel of sleepy hollow is based on an actual Celtic mythology of an entity in Ireland known by a couple of names, eg The Dullahan , Crom Dubh/ Black Tom, who is the Original Headless HorseMan & is a part of the Unseelie Court( Court of Dark Fairies). In the original stories / Myths, the only way to keep the Dullahan away is to have a piece of pure gold on you, regardless of whatever form it is, ie a hair pin, pendant, cross, pentacle, coin etc. as long as you have a piece of pure gold on your person & in some telling, where the piece of gold can be seen on you, the Dullahan is so terrified at the sights gold it keeps him away completely.
Also, ich erinnere mich, dass der im Kino damals sogar ab 12 war, was ich sehr krass fand. Darum ist mir das auch konkret in Erinnerung geblieben. Auf DVD war der dann ab 16 Jahren, meine ich. War damals viel im Kino und der Videothek.

This is one of my favorite Johnny Depp movies, one of my favorite accents he has done, and pretty much everything about this film is great. After this I highly suggest another great and tragically underrated Johnny Depp movie is 'From Hell'. Another mystery movie about another famous story: Jack the Ripper. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.
You can visit Sleepy Hollow by Metro North train from Manhattan. The cemetery, church, and bridge (no longer covered). Sleepy Hollow is a Dutch settlement in near Spuyten Duyvill Bridge ("spitting Devil" in Dutch).
Actor Christopher Lee, who plays the magistrate assigning Ichabod Crane to the village of Sleepy Hollow, is seated on the magistrate's bench, which appears to have "bat wings" emerging from the sides. It is Tim Burton's nod to the actor's famous dracula roles from the 1960's.
New York was originally named New Amsterdam when the Dutch settled there in the 1600's. It was renamed for the then Duke of York when the British took over the land during the Revolutionary War.
The Horseman (when headless) was played by actor/stuntman/martial artist Ray Park who played "Darth Maul" in Star Wars Episode 1 and also played "The Toad" in the first X-Men movie.
Aw dude no way!!! That explains a lot - the physical presence of the Horseman was INCREDIBLE - so threatening, graceful yet somehow creating a very oppressing feeling that really amplified the tension in the film! What a talent!
And he also portrayed Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation!!!!😉
I love this movie so much! Tim Burton is one of the best direct in this kind of movie genre and cinematography. I love the casting of this movie especially Christina Ricci (who played Wednesday/girl in Casper) and of course the amazing Johnny Depp ❤🔥
When it came out people decried it a little because of the brightness of the blood. "They could have made it look more natural" was the reasoning. While I don't know if that was confirmed by Tim Burton, but years later people have began to speculate that this was a homage to the old Hammer Horror movies. They were the first prominent horror movies in colour and they made the blood extra bright for contrast and effect.
Of course it was intentional to begin with and made for a great effect. Sometimes people overlook things like that at first.

There's a 1998 miniseries called "Merlin" with Sam Neill and Helena Bonham Carter which is a great watch. The main antagonist is also played by Miranda Richardson (the stepmother in this movie).
Casper Van Dean is the guy fighting the headless horseman after he killed the mom,& dad & kid...Casper is on Starship Troopers.

On the topic of mysterious beheadings (yikes) I truly hope some studio makes a film about Nahanni Valley, also known as The Valley of The Headless Men. It's a natural park area in Canada, a huge valley inside a canyon 130 km long (80 miles), surrounded by cliffs 1 km high (3300 feet). There is only one entrance at the south, and there are barely any areas free of trees or hills where helicopters could land, none for airplanes.
Over the centuries there have been mysterious events. The valley was the home of the Naha people (hence the name), a native tribe known for raiding and pillaging their neighbors, who lived around the canyon. One day, for unknown reasons, the entire Naha all disappeared just like that. Locals tell stories of dangerous spirits that inhabitate that region.
Over the past 200 years, several expeditions have disappeared in the valley, appeared brutally murdered, or even appeared decapitated -the heads were never found- like explorer brothers Willie McLeod and Frank McLeod in 1908, who were looking for gold mines, disappeared, and their headless bodies were later found in the valley, their belongings still with them but their heads never to be found.
In 1946 geologists Frank Henderson and John Patterson explored the valley and split up, agreeing to meet back at the entrance a few weeks later. Henderson showed up but Patterson never appeared again. Henderson came back to the valley with a search party, wanting to rescue Patterson wherever he was. The first night the party camped inside Nahanni, a group of First Nations natives approached them in the middle of the night, and told them that "everyone had to leave immediately", as the natives had seen "white figures" roaming the valley, looking for them.
The Headless Horseman was played by Christopher Walken for when he had his head. Ray Park played the Horseman for most of the film, he also played Darth Maul in Phantom Menace, Toad in X-men, and Snake Eyes in GI Joe Retaliation.

I absolutely love old Tim Burton's films. They had their own absolutely authentic gloomy atmosphere, into which you are completely immersed. All modern works are mainly rendered using computer graphics, which are very visible and spoil the whole feeling of realism.

This is my second favorite Tim Burton film. My all time favorite being Batman (mostly because of Jack Nicholson).
Ichabod has great detective skills but I think his disposition is more suited to traffic and parking than homicide.
Johnny Depp plays a much more experienced homicide detective in "From Hell" very loosely based on the story of Jack the Ripper. Not a bad movie but very interesting who plays his partner.

You may not have recognized Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman. It was him throughout the movie. They just digitally removed his head. Having been born in 1977 and having grown up in the 70's through 90's, I've seen LOTS of Christopher Walken's movies. You two should check him out and see if there are some future reaction videos you can do with some of his movies.
Walker is wonderful but I believe they did use body doubles as well. A riding stunt man, Ray Park, was actually in the saddle when the headless horseman’s head was off. My understanding is that Walken didn’t like horses much and was afraid of them. He said they didn’t like him..lol! A reaction to The Deer Hunter would be interesting. I have trouble watching that movie but I might be able to watch a reaction. The Russian Roulette scenes are horrific to me…

I love this movie and I haven't seen many reactions to it. I was excited to stumble upon your channel and see it in your uploads! Excellent reaction and I appreciate your discussions about the movie making process and storytelling. I suspect you've seen A Nightmare on Elm Street, so I'll suggest From Hell as the next Depp movie to check out. And check out The Dead Zone for more Christopher Walken, or you could go with The Deer Hunter. Walken won a best supporting actor Oscar for that one, but, man, it's a grim movie.
Highly recommend the film "Brotherhood of the Wolf" one of the most awesome action films with a phenomenal story but few people are aware of its existence.

Tim burton said he specifically made a point of squirting blood in johnny depps face every chance he got when he wasn’t expecting it.
This is in my Halloween collection of DVDs. I bring out some of these videos out around October. Last time I had my parents watch I' Frankenstein last year which you might want to try sometime.
34:43 He could see just fine. Ray Park was wearing a blue ski mask the whole time so they could edit his head out of the film. The most use of CGI in the film was simply to fill in the collar to his suit wherever it got obscured by the head.

My mom and me watched this movie hundred's of times growing up! We could laugh and count how many times Ichabod fainted throughout the movie, making a game out of it. 😆
Out of all the scenes that were supposed to be scary for a kid, the only part that freaked me out as a 7 year old was having to kiss The Headless Horseman, other than that, haha, I would fine. I always loved watching the behind the scenes, special effects and how movies are made.
Johnny Depp was in his mid thirties when he acted in this movie and his love intrest,Christina Ricci, was in her late teens(19 i think). So it would have been kinda weird to have them both full on kiss.

When this came out I watched it in the theater four times
I went and saw it in the theaters with my family. It was *highly* anticipated, lol. Assigned seating still wasn’t a thing (just ordering tickets early on Fandango lol), so you had to show up super early if you wanted good seats.
I’m not sure what their actual age difference is, but I always thought of Christina Ricci as being way too young to be JD’s love interest. I still saw her as a child (even though she’s older than me), cuz of The Addams Family and Casper lol. She just has a very youthful face.

The only thing i dont like is the ending. Although he solves the mystery, the police he goes back to has no intention of using "criminology" to solve crimes. Its much easier to just throw people in jail and forget about them. Ichabod now has a wife and "son", but can still be thrown in jail any time if they wanted. It ends the mystery, but nothing in the city changed.

I remember wanting to see this movie when I was a kid, especially after seeing the Disney cartoon. It was on TV one day, but it was on pay-per-view or we didn't carry the channel. I could barely see the movie, so I decided to keep the TV on to mainly listen to it in the background. I listened to audiobooks growing up, so I figured I could make it work.
Aw, I can only imagine! Things were so different in our childhoods, we actually had to make sure to tune in on a certain day at a certain time, or wait for the VHS to come out!
@@OfficialMediaKnights I was in my parents' room that day; I think I went as far as Johnathan Masbath's death scene. I didn't finish the film, but we eventually got the VHS from a Columbia House catalog, I believe.
That's so cool!! I remember when my mom rented it out for us and, though I (Denise) was a horror fanatic since I was a kid, this just solidified my passion even more! Such a great movie!

One of my favourite movies. In the same vein I suggest Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola with Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder and Interview with a vampire by Neil Jordan with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Very good and visually stunning movies
Just like with Beetlejuice even after all this time the effects the acting everything still holds up really really well this is actually one of my mandated movies every Halloween season
