    It's interesting to see how what ponting values in a fielder.
    Fielding for him means those people who can do more than just take great catches which is why slip field specialists like a Mark Waugh or Mark Taylor don't make this list.
    Rates saving runs as important but rates being able to take wickets as more important which is why Rhodes is a little further down then people expect. And I think he is right there for breaking partnerships and winning games taking wickets is probably more important
    I think punter has it right. It's very well thought out

    • @williammckenzie22
      @williammckenzie22 Před 5 lety +1

      I've seen a lot of Kallis, and nobody mentioned his name for a reason. He was a very good, reliable fielder - but never in the league of those mentioned above. One has to be more than consistently good to be a true great. While Kallis consistently took good catches, he never came close to the breathtaking brilliance of Symonds, Ponting, Rhodes, or even Clarke for that matter.
      As for being the best Test batsman of his time, he wasn't even in the top 5. It's not about aggregates, it's how much one contributes to the team's chance of winning (and how often) that matters. The likes of Lara, Dravid, Sangakkara, Inzamam, Younus did it brilliantly. Hayden and Ponting contributed a lot to Aus, but that team was just incredible - so credit gets shared between several people.

    So many nostalgia comments.
    Symonds is unquestionably, objectively, the best in this list.
    Did the dude EVER drop a catch in his career? He was quick, he could change level in the blink of an eye, he had athleticism that was like a gift heaped upon him by the gods, he was dead-eye accurate throwing down the stumps, he was tall broad and long levered which gave him a huge and lethal throwing arm. He was absolutely elite no matter where you put him and I am not just saying that cos Ricky said it, I've thought that for over a decade. Could save runs as well as anybody. Could pluck catches out of the ether, could conjure run-outs out of thin air.
    His skill-set was so complete that he was about as close to the perfect fielder as you'll probably ever see in the game of Cricket.

    The best of them all: Ricky Ponting. I have been watching and studying cricket religiously since the early 70's and I think he has Rhodes too high. All things considered, Viv Richards was a better fielder than Rhodes. I remember when Lillee would sprint after the ball like a lion and hurl it in to Marsh over the top of the bails. Rod would just shake his head and smile. Underrated to the max. Not just catches or saving runs but causing run outs out of nothing. That was "fielding" in my book. Not one Pakistani in the top 100.

    To be fair to Ricky Ponting he would not have played against some of our West Indian greats like Sir Viv, Clive Lloyd or Roger Harper who are considered to be some of the best fielders off all time. I'm fine with his top 5, they are all exceptional and his assessment of Andrew Symonds is fairly accurate.
