I've seen a lot of Kallis, and nobody mentioned his name for a reason. He was a very good, reliable fielder - but never in the league of those mentioned above. One has to be more than consistently good to be a true great. While Kallis consistently took good catches, he never came close to the breathtaking brilliance of Symonds, Ponting, Rhodes, or even Clarke for that matter. As for being the best Test batsman of his time, he wasn't even in the top 5. It's not about aggregates, it's how much one contributes to the team's chance of winning (and how often) that matters. Took some amazing grabs in there of some really quick bowlers with amazing nonchalance.. Quick over the ground and a rocket arm for a little guy....
1. Jonty Rhodes 2. Chris Harris 3. Ricky Ponting 4. Herschelle Gibbs 5. Paul Collingwood 6. Brendan McCullum 7. AB de Villiers 8. Lou Vincent 9. Mark Waugh 10. Ross Taylor 23. Andrew Symonds.
I'm sorry, but any list that doesn't have Mark Waugh in it is just bogus, according to me. Mark Waugh, for me, was THE greatest fielder of all time. So unflashy like these other guys but was brilliant no matter where you put him in the field.
I wonder why he did not have Mr. Mark Waugh on the list. Some of people who started it out back in the 90s are Jonty Rhodes, Chris Harris, Mark Waugh and Pointing himself (agreed he can't name himself in a list)
Lachlan Winter I’m sorry please watch jonty Rhodes’ best run out a you’ll find he a lot better than that stupid Aussie (I actually love Maxwell but he’s not better than jonty)
Haha Ponting, wasn't a bad fieldsman himself. But some fantastic fielders/choices here none the less, and I think that happened for a few games didn't it? Where De Villiers, Gibbs and Rhodes all fielded together in the same match? Either way it would make for a brilliant off side field :).
The best of them all: Ricky Ponting. I have been watching and studying cricket religiously since the early 70's and I think he has Rhodes too high. All things considered, Viv Richards was a better fielder than Rhodes. I remember when Lillee would sprint after the ball like a lion and hurl it in to Marsh over the top of the bails. Rod would just shake his head and smile. Underrated to the max. Not just catches or saving runs but causing run outs out of nothing. That was "fielding" in my book. Not one Pakistani in the top 100.
Rhodes, Collingwood, jadeja, ponting, raina, devilliers, guptill, du plessis, herschelle gibbs, Steve smith, hussey brothers, mccullum, bravo, pollard, kane williamson, jordan silk, Corey anderson, trent boult, yuvraj and kaif(at their prime).. Cleanest and most consistent fielders... Honourable mentions- Robin singh, Pandya, manish, younus khan, dravid, dilshan, thisara perrara, rahane, Michael Waugh, tamim iqbal , ben stokes and many more..
dravid may have taken most catches in test but he has dropped many in his career check india tour of england in 2011.jadeja is easily our best ever fielder.
no doubt he had dropped some catches but everyone have a bad day. he is one of the finest fielders in India . But I consider Suresh Raina as the best fielder ever. he rarely drops a catch
yes raina is slightly better catcher than jadeja but jadeja got accuracy with hitting stumps and bullet arms . in this ipl jadeja single handedly tied the match against mumbai indians with two direct hit run out in last over, repeated again against delhi with two direct hits.
Even if he tries to be honest Ponting always seems biased to me. An arrogant and proud man. While naming the fielders too he seemed was biased. Rhodes at #3?? He gave fielding lessons when none of the teams knew the importance of fielding. He is numero uno across the decades and ages of international cricket.
The Waugh brothers were excellent - Mark has a well-deserved reputation as being extremely gifted in the field but make no mistake Steve was a superb fieldsman.
To be fair to Ricky Ponting he would not have played against some of our West Indian greats like Sir Viv, Clive Lloyd or Roger Harper who are considered to be some of the best fielders off all time. I'm fine with his top 5, they are all exceptional and his assessment of Andrew Symonds is fairly accurate.

I'm sorry, but any list that doesn't have Mark Waugh in it is just bogus, according to me. Mark Waugh, for me, was THE greatest fielder of all time. So unflashy like these other guys but was brilliant no matter where you put him in the field.
thank you
I think mark waugh was d greatest slip fielder of all time n jonty was d greatest backward point/covers fielderd game has ever seen
I was thinking the same thing. He was unflashy but I have never seen a dropped catch from that man. Be it in slips or be it anywhere in the field.
You've misspelled Chris Harris, mate.
Ravindra Jadeja is up there with them now...
nope.
Ponting himself is one of the best fielder of all time. Run out slip catch used to field in point in the beginning of his career
I wonder why he did not have Mr. Mark Waugh on the list.
Some of people who started it out back in the 90s are
Jonty Rhodes, Chris Harris, Mark Waugh and Pointing himself (agreed he can't name himself in a list)
And you sir were better than all of them
Gary Pratt???
Ponting would get into my top 5. De Villiers catch in slips is marvellous technique.
1) Jonty Rhodes
2) Ricky Ponting
3) AB Devilliers
4) Hershelle Gibbs
5) Suresh Raina/Faf du plessis
The slip legend R DRAVID
The slip legend is mark Waugh.
NZ has had a lot of great slip fielders too(not always great players overall though like Dravid is).
No Glenn Maxwell? Hes jonty rhodes but can actually hit the stumps
Lachlan Winter I’m sorry please watch jonty Rhodes’ best run out a you’ll find he a lot better than that stupid Aussie (I actually love Maxwell but he’s not better than jonty)
no one is better than jonty. Any fielder's list starts with Jonty Rhodes.
Give maxwell more time then he will be talked about along side rhodes, ponting, symonds
i would take ponting and symonds first because of how good they were at hitting the stumps then rhodes no doubt
Accurate 5 but I question the positioning :P Nice one Ricky
Haha Ponting, wasn't a bad fieldsman himself. But some fantastic fielders/choices here none the less, and I think that happened for a few games didn't it? Where De Villiers, Gibbs and Rhodes all fielded together in the same match? Either way it would make for a brilliant off side field :).
Mark Waugh #1Gibbs wouldn't be in my top 5
Mark Waugh in for Collingwood
The best of them all: Ricky Ponting. I have been watching and studying cricket religiously since the early 70's and I think he has Rhodes too high. All things considered, Viv Richards was a better fielder than Rhodes. I remember when Lillee would sprint after the ball like a lion and hurl it in to Marsh over the top of the bails. Rod would just shake his head and smile. Underrated to the max. Not just catches or saving runs but causing run outs out of nothing. That was "fielding" in my book. Not one Pakistani in the top 100.
Brilliant cricket mind Ponting, I have him in the top 3 tho he was absolutely brilliant at run outs and didn't drop catches.
He left Mark Waugh and Brian McMillan..
They were good at slip catching
What about kallis. ?
3....4 more years and rabindra jadeja will be 1 of all time best fielder
Amazing
Rhodes, Collingwood, jadeja, ponting, raina, devilliers, guptill, du plessis, herschelle gibbs, Steve smith, hussey brothers, mccullum, bravo, pollard, kane williamson, jordan silk, Corey anderson, trent boult, yuvraj and kaif(at their prime).. Cleanest and most consistent fielders... Honourable mentions- Robin singh, Pandya, manish, younus khan, dravid, dilshan, thisara perrara, rahane, Michael Waugh, tamim iqbal , ben stokes and many more..
where's Steve Smith Rahul Dravid
dravid may have taken most catches in test but he has dropped many in his career check india tour of england in 2011.jadeja is easily our best ever fielder.
no doubt he had dropped some catches but everyone have a bad day.
he is one of the finest fielders in India .
Australia & India Respectively
I expected Jonty Rhodes to be no1...
Great pick Collingwood, for sure!
1.Johnty Rhodes
2.A B Devilliers
3.Ricky Ponting
4.Andrew Symonds
5.Paul Collingwood
Top 5 Fielders of this generation:
1)ABD
2)Jadeja
3)Boult
4)Baz
5)C Anderson
Where is ravindra jadeja?
