- Yeezy and Kanye West have just been dropped by Adidas. I, like many of you, saw this coming, obviously. But I didn't expect it to happen so soon. Its said to cut a quarter of a billion off their profits for the the last quarter, being that they basically run Yeezy while West and his friends design it. I'm not sure I believe that this is the end of the brand though, the name Yeezy is almost too famous to be gone forever, and I just wonder what it is that will allow the brand (if not Kanye West) to come back

I work in the industry
I worked at Forever 21 back in the latter half of the 2010s and I MUST SAY there was endlesss knockoffs and inspiration drawn from his Yeezy line and Wests personal style. His influence was MEGAA.
He was incredibly influential, literally one of the best design teams in the industry, but much like most celebrity lines, if the celeb falls out of favour, the brand is sure to fail
There are lots of copycats from Dior, LV or Gucci too.

GAP didn’t just overprice, they also held meetings without him and copied his designs and sold them as basic GAP items at a cheaper price. This is where his anger sprouted from not just because of the pricing.
Great video though covering different time periods but I also don’t believe YZY is finished. Ye purposely “cancelled” himself to get out of his contracts with Adidas and GAP. So his purpose is to actually have a clean slate for only YZY
I actually had that in the ‘directors cut’ of the video about everything Gap did, did you see theyre now sendign supes of their own stock to people? There was a guy on tiktok that did a video, but so so so much had to be cut to make it under 17
I also think its very likely he cancelled himself to get out of GAP and Adidas too, he did it with Nike before, I wouldnt put it past him. He now has enough money do work Yeezy independantly so I dont doubt it at all

I would be interested in how much work Ye does on his designs--it sounds like his design team is pulling the majority of the weight, and he just picks and chooses what he likes.
Thats still a legitimate design style though, most design houses work with a team and just dont credit them as publicly

Nothing revolutionary with Yeezy fashion . Their fashion is similar to Uniqlo, the comfortable minimalist aesthetic. I had been shopping at Uniqlo for the past 10yrs.
I actually quite liked it when it first came into prevalence, wasn’t sold on the first collection, but the following few were pretty good. Shame that he turned out to be not a very nice person
every cancelled person is always one capital attracting product away from being uncancelled. kanye fans are already convinced everything that has happened is part of some visionary freethinking marketing stunt. they know what everyone else knows but doesnt want to admit-when his manic cycle is over and he realizes what hes lost, hes going to lock himself away on some remote island for 5 months and drop a decent album that gets a ton of play and everything will be forgiven and forgotten once again. 😑

I genuinely think the clothes hit HARD in the early seasons, they questioned so much about the industry speed and the way we produce clothes and see clothes. It literlly started the oversized clothing look thats going on now, it was so monumental in its idea, just not profitable, if you remove Kanye from the picture, the clothes themselves are strong in concept, tho they did get weaker season on season because they didnt change much (or at all in many cases)

How is oversized clothing pioneering? Ppl have been wearing this way since the 80's, as a uniform on the daily. Just bc it's a trend now doesn't make it visionary. His pieces are not prototypes of what we see in today's oversized.
The silhouettes from the 80s are different and largely based on or inspired by 40s style clothing or zoot suiter culture. Each of these were pioneering in changing the fashion of their day. They helped change the way fashion was interpreted for their generations.
The trend of oversized streetwear had been coming out of london for a while too, based off of the chav culture, there were brands that heightened it, like Nasir Mazhar and Christopher Shannon, although there were international brands championing oversized clothes too, like Juun.J with their neoprene sweatshirts in 2013.
What Yeezy did was to take that idea and bring it to a way that was accessible to all people, both into and not into fashion. This is pioneering for the industry and hasn't been done on such a wise scale for men since Hedi Slimane popularised skinny jeans again (after they were popular in the 80s known as drainpipes)
He probably sees himself as an Andy Warhol type. This is "performance art" to him. Funny how shock art never involves feeding a hungry village

The intellectual property of Yeezy is from Ye, many brands have design teams, pattern cutters, seamstresses as he did. Thats why the title of head designer was changed to creative director years ago. People pay for your idea not something you design yourself now

If Ye's clothing and shoes were the cost of things at Zara, Top Shop, Uniqlo or H &M it would be good.

I must move in the wrong circles because I don't know anyone who owns or wears Yeezy. The popularity of the brand doesn't make sense to me, but I'm more of a maximalist (Westwood, McQueen, Gaultier, and Mugler are brands I enjoy), so I'm not the demographic.
Im also a maximalist in my personal style, but I think this style was also maximalist in construction, it took that beat up aesthetic to a real extreme, so I appreciated that (not that I own any Yeezy tbh)

The commercials, the ads, even the products were made for her! So why would someone like me buy it? I’m not surprised it did not sell as well as they thought. I’m impressed that he can handle so much turmoil for so long, makes me wonder how you can be an outcast as a designer within the industry and still be relevant to his consumers. Just like how Steve Jobs was treated in his tech community before his rise. The end consumers finally dictated his success.
In conclusion, the purists in the industry will always be judgmental. Virgil tried to cater his brand to both of what he terms as “purists” and “tourists”, and I believe we should look at Kanye simply as tourists.
Looking at the bigger picture as a “tourist” makes Kanye look like a genius critic of the modern fashion era. One of the few non conforming artists and designers out there, the true meaning of being a avant-garde in a well established industry is to go against it. Showing us how style isn’t individualistic but entirely compliant to herd mentality and how celebrities perceive and advertise them. The colors in many seasons are muted and dystopian, they are a representation of an unwanted future and not meant to be worn popularly. A slavery themed, monochromatic collection represents Kanye’s mind, his ultimate fear of obedience, compliance, homogeneity and control yet a collection that resonates entirely that.
Kanye isn’t going to fall for too long. He did several times and got back up again. This whole BLM and MAGA controversy is just a matter of perspective, it’s a divisive topic but not unanimously controversial. Many people applaud his stance as much as hate him for it. I mean, WTAPS have literal communist symbols on their clothing but no one bats an eye.
I think we should look at him philosophically instead of looking at how his clothing matches with our closet.
This is so incredibly smart, you explain his contribution to fashion really well, and I really really agree that he concep tually was so important to fashion evolution. But the one thing that I think is important to note, is that this was the first big outcry for the Yeezy brand for having such negative racist messages. The vast majority of the scandals before were only based on Kanye the person, not Yeezy the brand, or were largely limited to the clothes. The reason it was so bad this time was because he took his own agenda to the clothes, and it overpowered the message and people didn’t want to support that.
I genuinely believe if he didn’t have the WLM shirts in the last show, they wouldn’t have needed to cut ties with Kanye at all, because then it wouldn’t have been associated with the brand, just with Kanye
@@understitchYT There’s certainly a difference between joining people to a common interest and acting entitled as a moral judge. I think that’s how Yeezy stepped in unwisely.
No matter how well intentioned it may be, an electric car company shouldn’t make other car owners feel bad or guilty, instead share their passion with like minded people.
As a person Kanye is completely entitled to his opinion but business wise I agree with you. I think you shouldn’t mix in personal opinions of polemic issues with your business. Our world is so complex that there are always things we can disagree with one another.
