- To catch this railroad on the move in summer daylight is truly a challenge. Extensive work windows during the summer months are necessary to get urgent maintenance done: This railroad operates in the Rocky Mountains in Montana, where heavy snowfalls in winter can make track work difficult. Furthermore, Montana Rail Link handles a lot of BNSF traffic, but runs only few own trains. The most famous is the "gas local", which commutes on a daily schedule between Thompson Falls and Missoula to fill a gap in a gas pipeline. Anticipating to meet the morning eastbound, I followed MRL's 10th subdivision west out of Missoula and was nonetheless surprised to actually bump into him. This beautiful area, the awesome weather, and state road MT-200 running parallel with the track invited for an extended chase east, which was great fun. It made up for the hassle the day before, when I filmed the "Logan local" kicking cars in heavy downpour (which is also in the video). However, the highlight is an MRL work train with caboose I caught near Paradise, MT. All power you'll get to see in this video is EMD made, from 50+ year-old GP35 to modern SD70ACe type locomotives.. Enjoy watching rather rare footage of MRL in action!
Note: This video has been recorded and produced in 4k Ultra-HD resolution.

One thing that impresses me about the MRL is how their locos are always clean and well presented.
I agree
I assure you MBMARS I will keep watching as long as you keep making your videos
I know and I appreciate it :)
OMG! The beauty of Montana is breathtaking! I'm so glad I watched this one MB. Beautiful scenery and trains. Thanks!
I have nothing to add :) It's simply great scenery and I'm happy MRL did their part and sent these trains my way.
Wow! I love the Montana scenery and the MRL locomotives!! Thanks for the awesome video!!!
It's really pretty out there! Good you enjoyed it :)
Well done! I just love the sound those 567D3A diesels make in the old GP35s. Music to my ears.
Thanks!
Fantastic shots. Those SD70ACe's look and sound great. Excellent video.
Thanks! The SD70ACes looked like freshly painted. Beautiful and elegant :)
Great trains and scenery! MRL has one of the best paint schemes IMO and their engines are always clean and presentable! This makes me wanna take a trip out west the last time I was in Montana was in 2000 I saw a coal train with all shiny executive 70macs boy how times have changed.
I definitely agree. The MRL look really cool, particularly in the mountains. Indeed, times change quickly...
As always, top notch trains and beautiful countryside!
True!
Another super video! They keep those engines looking good up there! Beautiful scenery/country also!
I'm happy you enjoyed the video. No doubt, the MRL engines stand out in this scenery.
MBMARS thanks for pointing out the different paint on the MRL. I never noticed the lion before you pointed it out. Beautiful country nice shots. I deeply appreciate your videos.
I thank you for your continued interest in this channel's videos! Keep watching :)
Always nice when you can move around for rail action outside your own space. Montana is a beautiful state. Thanks for taking us along with this share. Keep up the Professional work,my friend
I very happily share these moments and the videos. I wouldn't just produce them in this quality for my own records.
Beautiful trains, beautiful scenery..
Indeed... I was happy I could catch these trains in this area.
Been a while since I was in Montana. Miss the scenery! You captured it well!
I understand it! Great, thanks.
What a great video!
Excellent video. Beautiful places.
Many thanks! It's really great out there.
Gotta love 50 yr old geeps nice work in tough conditions
They looked and sounded really great. Yea, the weather could have been better, but well...
Wow mb.... you had me with the MRL boxcar on the gas train until I saw the MRL Caboose on the work train and 269 running long hood forward across the bridge, oh my!!! Excellent video, MRL is right up there with the FEC and the Alaska RR in my personnel opinion. I believe I have said it before, but you have a very unique perspective that no one else does when it comes to capturing trains on video. Please keep up the great work and keep the videos coming. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks so much for your comment. I also got excited when I saw that caboose. Scenery and trains look more like a model railroad, almost unreal in this sunlight. I loved it and wished I had more time to stay longer. However, due to extensive summer maintenance, it is not easy to find anything moving. I think the work train had a 10-hour work window. This is unheard of on the bigger railroads.
Nice catches with the EMDs. It’s unique because Montana is a state no one talks about and the scenery looks fantastic
Montana is sparsely populated and doesn't have much industry. I think that's why MRL is actually concentrating more on service for BNSF than on running own trains. The mountain regions are truly amazing.
Fantastic gets. I love the big SD70ACe`s
Thanks so much!
Wonderful catches! It's amazing to see those GP35 in very good shape even after more then 50 years of service... of course is a result of good maintenance program of MRL!
The entire railroad looks like it's in good shape. I'm sure BNSF keeps an eye on MRL's maintenance as most traffic on those lines is actually generated by them.
Very cool video.Really liked the unmodified/as built GP-35's.Been a long time since I've seen any.
Same here. They are rare these days.
Just watching your video makes a person want to pickup and move out there ! Excellent video, you always do an outstanding job on your videos. Thanks for sharing your wonderful views :-))
Many thanks and I perfectly get your point. When I watch this video I'd like to go back immediately :)
Great video, love seeing the cabooses in use.
Thanks! Same here, I was equally surprised and excited to catch it.
You are the best u.s. railway channel on u-tube bar none. Really enjoy the close up shots of locos and wagons, it’s nice to hear big diesels ticking over while switching. Your camera work is amazing, a good mix of everything including surrounding locations. As a an American railroad fan here in the U.K. I rely on your excellent photography matched only perhaps by 7Idea productions videos. All the best for the future. Mick.
Thanks so much for your nice feedback. I really appreciate it. I certainly try to capture atmosphere and detail at any location I visit and train I catch. For me, this is part of the "railfanning experience". I'm glad to share these adventures with anyone who enjoys watching the videos. Keep watching :)
Wow 😳‼️Just fantastic
Thank you very much :)
Great video like always
Thank you :)
Keep 'em coming!
Will do.
I love that color scheme
So Awesome mb... its great that you caught action that us east coaster never see 👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽😤 glad to see that you enjoyed your trip
Many thanks. Well, I'm living in the Southeast and don't get to see MRL here either ;)
Great video. And you couldn't resist the chase. Interesting caboose - center cupola - but seemed odd in the design - not box like. Thanks.
Thank you. Lol, if circumstances permit, chases are fun and catching this MRL train was definitely a highlight in this scenery. And so I had no other choice than following him back eastward for 30 miles or so :) I also haven't seen a caboose like this in a long time.
great video!!
Thanks!
man great video thats looks like a great place to whatch trains i,ve been to wyoming to visit with my mom and dad it was nice
Thanks! Yea, I remember you once mentioned it.
awesome video and catches.
Thanks, Phillip.
Nice video; I enjoyed; thanks.
Great, thank you.
Great video
Thanks!
Beautiful Trains👌
Yep!
Super cool Bravo
Great, thank you!
That's kinda neat how the brief shot of the BNSF train at the end makes for a sort of segue to your next video
Yea, I have done this in almost all my recent videos.
Hi. The footage with beautiful back drops is brilliant for me living in the UK 🇬🇧 It’s good you take the time to put on what’s happening especially for me back in England so I understand what’s going on and that keeps me watching 👍🏻 Are the locomotives second hand? We don’t get many freight trains of that magnitude over here and are roads are full 🙈 Cheers Stevie 😄 🏴
Yes, most of the older EMD power is second hand, but if I remember correctly, the SD70ACes that were on the gas local were purchased new.
Wow cool great video
Thanks!
mbmars01 you’re welcome
Woww fabulous
Thanks so much!
mbmars01 welcome
Switching cars in the yard....now thats train action....dude..you gotta make a video package......
I love to watch when they kick cars. Unfortunately, the weather was very bad and holding an umbrella made filming somewhat cumbersome. I would had liked to capture more of the actual switching from different perspectives, but well, we take it the way it goes... :)
LOVE THAT HORN
It's awesome.
👍👍👍
Nice catches! You went on vacation in Montana? Cool catches!
Thanks! Sort of, but it was too busy for an actual vacation. I would rather call it an excursion or expedition lol
Look up Southern Railway of BC. (British Colubia ) . they bought a shortline that has thesame scheme!
SRY is a neat little shortline. Formerly BC Hydro Railway, which was an interurban line. The caboose on the work train was originally a BCH unit (built in 1968).
@@thxfornothin1 I am making an attempt to model some of it in HO Scale. Cheers.
Excellent video. Is that a local train.
Thanks! Yes, most MRL trains are locals I think. The gas local is definitely a local train.
Awesome! Keep up the good work man! Also, those geeps in the beginning switching cars, kinda sounded like old mo pacs
But I just love it when I here a P3 P5 or M5's, or an EMD engine
Wow! Two aces for about 20-30 cars? Jeez, I woulda thought something like one ace, or even a small geep.
Thanks! These GP35s in the beginning are ex-DT&I (MRL #402) and ex-DRGW (#403) engines.
mbmars01 nice! Like your intro too.
mbmars01 do you have a camera protective case cover thing over the top? Because I thought about getting one, then I'm like, I'll just use an umbrella instead.
great video. Do you know when those sd70aces were built.
Thanks! No, I don't.
On the gas local line
Cool! Very nice video! What kind of camera did you use?
Thanks! I used a Panasonic WXF1 camcorder on this trip.
mbmars01 thank you! I’m asking cuz it’s very clear and good quality video! Keep it up! Just looked it up! Whoa that’s expensive camera!
Beautiful Scenery!
Quick question, when does the Gas Local usually leave Thompson Falls eastbound?
It's very, very nice out there. I (accidentally) caught the returning empty train at about midday, but this was 1.5 years ago. If you join the MRL Group on Facebook, the local railfans there can certainly provide up-to-date information.
mbmars01 Yes, I did and their info lined up with yours. Im just trying to get multiple confirmations as Montana is quite the far trip, dont want to waste it ya know? Lol
Thank you very much sir
Well, I perfectly understand it. I didn't travel to the NW just to enjoy the nice scenery either :) Unfortunately, it's hard to find the few trains that MRL runs for themselves; most activity is service for BNSF.
Looks like they are preparing to do extensive tie work.
Yep.
A mbmars you need to head to texas i10 exit 720 sealy tx old santa fe mainline bnsf galveston sub i saw 9 trains in 1hr.
That is cool. I definitely want to do some train watching in Texas at some time.
Montana would be a goal 4 me 2 come view
Yep, I can recommend it :)
I wonder if any of the company's do a ride along program? The police do it, does the railroad do it?
I don't think so.
What video camera do you have ? What kind of microphone do you use ?
I use a Panasonic Camcorder WXF1 with the built-in stereo microphone.
mbmars01 Thank you
I have a question. Why do they put a boxcar between the engines and the tankers? I have seen this before and I really have no clue. Hahaha. Can someone answer that question for me. Thank you very much. Greetings from Argentina.
gonzalo alvarez more like buffer car. It’s there to protect the locomotive.
it is for safety in case of fire on the diesel engines, not to put fire on hydrocarbon or chemicals tanks cars
butthurt8 thanks. I had just a little idea but I wasn't sure. Thanks a lot.
ptitrainrouge I thought that but I wasn't sure. Thanks for your answer.
How fast was the train going? Seems like 40-50
It wasn't easy to overtake him, so I'm sure he went 45mph for the most part. There was no other train on this branch at that time that would have slowed down him.
Okay thank you! Loved the vid!
Cool, thanks :)
Great video
What's up with the audio, though? Sounds like an old LP record.
Thanks!
Haha, that's the sound of heavy rainfall on my umbrella...
