Today Iâm sharing my finished Felix Pullover, Brandenâs knit work socks, and the progress on my #wnhsocksbychristmas socks! Soo glad to have you here! #woolneedleshands #knittingpodcast
I feel you on the long socks. My partner has size 14 and the first pair I knit for him was a finer gauge than typical for sock yarn. It was yarn my grandmother bought in europe 5 decades ago.
Blocking: I didnât know about blocking when I started, then went back and blocked my first shawl that I had already been in love with and could not believe the change. It blocked out even more wonderful and now I block everything. But, youâre right, sometimes us newbies werenât taught blocking initially. đđ»
I grew up knowing about blocking because my grandmother always had giant knit lace table cloths pinned to her living room floor. While she was knitting them they looked like a tangled mass of threads on her lap and then the blocking process was like a magic trick or a flower blossoming.
The bread clips to hold your tail is GENIUS! I just noticed that. IDK (can't remember) if you've talked about that before but LOVE IT! There are so many times I wished I had a way to get my tails out of the way on my work that wasn't annoying. Thanks for always sharing!
"I like a cross section of knitwear that's been folded." That was so quirky and specific, I laughed out loud. Definitely my favorite line from this episode!
If you plan to knit another pair of socks with 100% wool yarn you can get reinforcement yarn or woolly nylon to knit with the wool yarn in the heels and toes to help them last longer. Most yarn shops used to carry this and it came in limited colors.
Hope youâve also had a great Christmas with your family in the snow!! Weâre enjoying the beach on these hot summer days down under in Western Australia đŠđș đ
I never block my knits. But I only knit with super wash yarn so I just wash and dry it when Iâm done. I guess some people call that blocking but as I donât actually lay out on a block I donât đ
I get it. I haven't knit my husband socks either. He has a size 14 foot and like thin socks. So, for him in think to get sock tube cranked for him. Lol
I LOVE the work socks! I need to make my husband a pair. I am currently knitting a pair of hand warmers in Lion Brand fishermanâs wool and Iâm using small needles, and I love the dense fabric it creates for warmth.
Hi Taylor, new sub here. I made my hubby a pair of socks with LB Fisherman's wool. They are gorgeous. He got a hole in the heel because he put them inside an old boot with a rough edge on the bottom. Well now I get to try an after thought heel repair. I almost felted them as they accidentally got into a regular wash with warm water. UGH! they were OK but it did scare me. I made a mosaic crochet queen sized bedspread with LB Fisherman's wool. Toasty warm and I washed it in my front loading washer on the wool cycle. Air dried and back in use. No issues.
Hi Valerie! These are great things to know. Thank you so much for sharing. And youâre absolutely right about the after thought heel. Iâve never done one, but at heart I know itâs an option. And this bedspread sounds amazing!
LOVE your Vlog! I'm a grandma whose been knitting for many, many years, but I always learn something or am inspired after watching your videos. The way you cover topics related to knitting is really enjoyable, and your demeanor as you host your vlog is approachable and real. Thanks for the work you put into them off camera; it shows when you are on camera. Merry Christmas! Enjoy that snow!
ooh! I hadn't heard of a spin dryer before. I have been trying to figure out if the sweater I'm working on now would fit into my knitting salad spinner that I use for smaller knits
Those sock blockers may be something i look into. My S/O wears a size 14, his Sasquatch sized feet. When I finally decide to make him socks it will be quite a large scale person.
Ok size 14 is a big undertaking! I commend you. And totally appreciate the magnitude of that job. đ They also have extendable sock blockers and Iâm thinking that may be something I need as well. đ„Ž

A good sock toe shape pattern is the rounded 'Star Toe' pattern which can be applied to any sock pattern. Scattered decreaes through the toe area. Love the Felix jumper (Reminds me of a special cat my son had, now in Heaven). Will have to try.
So, I wasn't going to learn to knit socks until the new year, but I got all my Christmas crafting done this weekend and could not resist casting on my first pair of knit socks. đ They're shorties, so they might be done by Christmas (I still have a lot of cooking/baking to do). I made socks with the same yarn for farm work and they held up well, but I did also slightly felt them. In general for toes and heels, I always do a short row heel and I do a shaped toe. I decrease unevenly so it follows the shape of my toes and I donât end up needing Kitchener bc I cast off the sides together. On blocking, I almost never block. I hate blocking. đ I only block lacework.
I actually watched you today with a cup of yummy Carmel Coffee and knitting a hat that I so have to get done. LOL. I feel like I need to knit a "Felix" since that is also my Hubby's name lol.
Nice socks!!! I only wear my knit socks and wash them in the machine, then lay on the table. I have yet to get a hole in a sock, and I don't know if ill ever get to learn to patch one, because new pairs just keep falling off the needles... I've walked hundreds of miles in them between walking the dog and being a waiter. They provide such good support. Merry Christmas, cya in a couple weeks!
I resisted blocking for a long time, then did steam blocking. I'm not sure when or why I switched to wetblocking, but it's now my go-to method. I never block socks and rarely block hats. If you have a washing machine with no centre agitator, you don't need a separate spin dryer, just use it's spin cycle, the knitted item needs to be in a garment bag to protect it. I typically do this with towels to balance the machine and to absorb more water.
Oh wow, Karine!! That is a a fab idea! My washing does not have a center agitator. I'm going give that a go before investing in a spin dryer. Thanks for the tip, especially with the towels and garment bag hints. :)
Blocking!!! Yes, it makes such a difference!!! (As a knitwear designer, I feel even more strongly about blocking than ever!) It especially breaks my heart when I see colorwork yoke sweaters that havenât been blocked-in fact, when Iâm knitting a top-down stranded yoke pullover, I pre-block (gently with a steam iron) before I separate for sleeves, because this is really the only time you can address any tension issues in the colorworkâŠit makes a huge difference. My FelixforAll is still on the needles-whole family has had Covid, and because Iâm using an especially fragile prespun Latvian wool Iâm not able to knit with it reclining on the sofa without it breaking (lol)âŠbut Iâm looking forward to getting back to it!
Oh absolutely about blocking colorwork! Itâs a big deal. And take care and get lots of rest! Your Felix can certainly wait. Sending warm and cozy vibes your way and hoping you have a quick recovery. â€ïžâ€ïž
OMG! Spin dryer?!?! Like for bathing suits? Between this and Andrea Mowryâs Pringle, Iâm not gonna dread blocking sweaters anymore! Thank you for this tip. Iâm gonna watch that vlog once Iâve finished this video âșïžđđż
Tayler, How much ease do you have in your Felix pullover? My cardigan has more than I like and I'd love some guidance before I start the pullover. Yours looks perfect! Also, Ive never considered a spin dryer because it's so arid here (in Utah). You're using it in Nevada, so I guess I need to reconsider! Your christmas socks are beautiful!!!!
Just because you've ranted about it previously I'm going to point this out, take it or leave it but I just like to geek out. On the close up of the toes for your husband's socks (which look amazing btw), your ssk look twisted to me. I don't know how you do them but generally people either slip knitwise both stitches and then knit them through the back loop, or (like i prefer) slip the first one knitwise and the second one purlwise and knit them through the back loop. Having the first st slipped knitwise creates a left slant without a twisted st in the front. I hope my comment doesn't come across as unwanted advice, love your channel!
Hi! This is actually great advice as Iâve often wondered why my toe decreases have that twisted look. What a revelation. Thank you! Iâll definitely try your way on my next pair. â€ïžâ€ïž
Maybe we need to see Branden's socks modeled by the owner! :) I love the Family Work socks. It is pretty easy to customize and they work up so quick (for people smaller than size 13) I did get brave and am working on my sock by Christmas via Magic Loop. I'm not 100% sold over DPN, but they are going well. I hope you and the kiddos are having fun at Mom's with the snow!
Hi Denise! First off, weâre having a great time up here. The snow is beautiful. Hope youâre having a great weekend as well. Also, I will definitely get some pics of Branden in his socks! And Iâm happy youâre taking the socks by Christmas challenge with me! â€ïžâ€ïž
Yes! It is really an amazing method for knitting socks if you suffer from second sock syndrome. đ I think Iâm going to need to make a video in how I do it.
Where can we find your hand dyed wool to buy, aside from the shop update dates? I have never seen any of your wool other than references you make during the WIP and FO parts of your CZcams videos. I would like to buy a sweater quantity of your wool, but have never seen any of it for sale. Great videos, BTW. Love them. :-)
Ha! I donât think Iâve ever heard or seen so many people getting my name right. What fun!

What's the difference between a spin dryer and just the spin program on your washing maschine? Is it more recommended to spin at higher speeds (1000+ spins per minute) or lower ones (400)? I have a front loading washing maschine.
Hi Tayler, I just ran across your video on blocking your Felix sweater and using a spin dryer. I was wondering if you have ever tried putting your wet blocked item in a lingerie bag and using the drain and spin cycle? I was thinking about trying this method after your video but I wanted your opinion on it. Thanks âșïž
Great question and in truth, nothing really, however having a smaller basin and one thatâs designated for spinning out small items or one piece at a time is nice so that you donât need to stuff a bunch of towels in there with your knits. If you put the knits in the basin by themselves, they can spin out of shape and stretch out beyond fixing.
So this is a fantastic question and one I need to chat about but just to answer your question, I wound the yarn into two separate cakes and made sure to start the second cake on the same color as the first. I started with the gold color from both cakes. đ
When you split the skein into two balls, youâll want to make sure youâre pulling from the same direction it came off of the skein (I hope that makes sense). Second, youâll want to start both socks at the same point in the yarn. So if you are starting with blue on one ball, for instance, make sure you start with blue on the second ball. It may mean scrapping a few inches to get to that point in the ball, but the order of the colors should match from that point. HTH!
I know about blocking. I'm not unaware. But I do not embrace blocking. It's unnecessary for most of the things I knit. Additionally, acrylic yarn is notorious for not really blocking well unless you steam it. And you can ruin acrylic with stream fairly easily. I think your position on blocking is a bit pretentious. It assumes a lot, not least of which is that people always use natural fibers that do actually block.
Imagine the frustration of a new knitter trying to wet-block an acrylic hat because you said to always block. New knitters often use cheaper acrylic yarn which resists blocking or requires a steamer to really see any significant difference. I've blocked things. I'm not against blocking things always. Sometimes it's worth it. Often, for me, it's not, either due to yarn choice or pattern/ object.
I understand and respect your âpositionâ on blocking your knits (or not blocking them) and make no judgements about your character as it relates to that position. But I stand by my position. In my experience, it has been a very satisfying culmination to the process and results in a piece that looks nice and makes me proud of my work. If I encourage folks to block their knits, it is because of this experience and has absolutely nothing to do with pretentiousness. I am NOT a pretentious person; whether it be in knitting or in general. I just know when something works and is worthy of being done. And acrylic can 100% be blocked and benefits from blocking in a lot of ways just as much as itâs wool counterpart. Now if a person chooses not to block their knits, thatâs fine. I donât judge. People can do what they want. But if youâre asking me (and this is my podcast where I share those sorts of answers) this is my outlook. Thank you for watching. đ
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS - You can certainly stand by your opinion, but in my opinion, a nearly blanket statement that all knits should be blocked is absolutely pretentious and privileged. And it went far beyond an "encouragement to block knits". The whole spiel you went on came across to me as extremely judgemental and elitist. I only recently discovered your channel, but I'm not certain it's for me. Especially considering this response. Thanks for making it easy to walk away and tell CZcams never to recommend you to me again.

Second, youâll want to start both socks at the same point in the yarn. So if you are starting with blue on one ball, for instance, make sure you start with blue on the second ball. It may mean scrapping a few inches to get to that point in the ball, but the order of the colors should match from that point. HTH!
Why do you block your socks? đ. Iris
I like to know, please, what is the name of your Xmas socks yarn. Thank you.
