I had my main cable smashed the same way as in the video, you can fix it yourself for probably under 10 euro if you really want to. The cable is 2.5mm thick you can buy a new one from a fishing/boat shop or a hardware store ( most often they don't have 2.5mm and you can buy 2mm, I've heard people managed to fit 3mm into the original housing of the cable). On the end of the gears you can make a double knot and push it inside it's hole, that would be sufficient if you can find a cable with the original fitting it would be better. On the other side the cable is clamped down into a special piece that is screwed into the hook, you can unscrew it and drill a hole through the hook thing, push the cable through that hole and make a knot. I couldn't find that fitting but you can also try to find a bolt that can be screwed into the hook, make a hole in bolt and clamp it down with the cable (the option with the knot is better in my opinion). You will need to adjust the new cable lenght as the original one was 135 cm (if I remember correctly).

I have repaired the winch on my Peugeot 308 SW. Lowered the spare wheel as far as it would go, then cut the cable. Then removed the device, opened it up. I found the main 2mm wire cable inside was a mess, all frayed, bent, and forced the two halves of the device apart. I replaced the main cable with 2mm stainless steel wire rope cable, used a connector, to connect the cut end, which holds the tyre on via the plastic box. I used a stop end on the other end in the plastic wheel inside the device. Cost me a few pounds for the parts off ebay.
It looked like it had been either overtightened, or had been lowered with the weight of the tyre supported on something, which could lead to the wire inside getting bunched up? It is a poor design, but seems to be common in many cars today.

Thank you! The wire was bent inside and could not lift the wheel up. Now I managed to fix it thanks to your video. It was tricky not to destroy the rusted nuts and not to break the plastic cup in the trunk. Everything went well. I hope I will never have to use the spare tire again but if I do, I do not have to pull the wire after the tire touches the ground. It is because of the bent wire. I tried to straighten it with pliers but still, it could make trouble.

Dear Friends. Today I've just discovered these videos and I feel really happy because I can complete my knowledge about Peugeot 307 SW, and also I can add my own,
I have a 307 SW since 2003, and I really love it even though I had a lot of problems with the car. And I still have problems.
The spare wheel holding system is an absolute failure! One of the most annoying problem you can meet in a 307 SW. I have changed twice the mechanism with new ones but after some time I had the same problem again and again..... It's a common problem in all Peugeot 307 SW not solved yet. My advice is don't spend your money and time trying to repair this mechanism. I bought a repair kit for tires and a cheap 12 colt air compressor. But just a few days before a friend had an interesting idea: replacing the mechanism with a mechanism from an old Citroen Xanthia. Actually is a modification. I'll try to find such a citroen mechanism and if there are interesting news I promise to post a video.

Crazy engineering - I have a 2011 model 308 and still the same design. Here in Australia a replacement winch is $380 - very expensive.
    Yours in frustration 😆😆😆
    Thanks again.

After I saw this videa for the first time I asked the manager of the local Peugeot agency if he thought his wife would succeed in changing a flat tyre on the side of the road, in the dark, in the rain - or if he coulld, himself. He just looked embarrassed and didn't answer...
UPDATE. I had all the advisories on my C.T. [French MoT] done - various brakes, steering and front suspension issues. As the car was up on the hoist I told them to remove the spare wheel from the carrier. Absolutely no point in it being there, tho' I note that the manual advises not to run without the wheel in the carrier. PFFF!to that. I bought a couple of cans of Holts 'Tyre Weld'.
If the spare has to be present for the next C.T. it will be in the boot ... Interestingly, the wheel [steel] is mighty rusty but the tyre is unused. The car is 2007

The reason for the problem with this winch on 307, 308, Citroën C5 and some Fiats, are a combination of bad construction and bad handeling!!!
When brand new, lower the wheel but no longer than that it touches the ground. From now on, pull the wheel out, keeping the wire tight at all times!! If you just lower the wheel to the ground and continue to slaken off, , the wire will mess up in the mechanism. You must have a sturdy pull as you continue lowering. On an old wich, the wire may be bendt and the pulling more tricky.
FYI. The cap that covers the winch nut is also there releace of he latch that secures the wheel up in its driving position.
The winch may in some cases be corrected streightning the wire or subtituting it. One may drill a hole staight up and pull the wire by hand and keeping the lock mechanism. All may be substituted with a bolt, but then it is more difficult to get the wheel out.
Why did thy not simply make a wheel well!?

People don't know how to use this stuff. In order to use it correct way one must understand how it works. After lifting the cap up, before turning winch anti clock wise you need to to turn it clock wise slightly in order for plastic tooth inside winch assembly to release it's pressure off the cable and then turn it anti clock wise to lower the tire. I repaired mine for 0,70 euro cents how much replacement cable cost.

  • @FractalCodex7

The important part isn't the tire lowering, its which direction you turn the lever to lower the wheel?

      Hi Idan,
      You are welcome! :)
I have bought my winch used from another Peugeot 307 SW. Nonetheless you can look through auction portals in your country (e.g. ebay). I have seen many people offering to fix that for you and charge smaller prize then used.
If you are dedicated to fix it yourself, then you will first need to remove your winch and open it. Same as I have done in the video. If this is only the steel wire then you can measure it and buy as a separate part. I advise you not to go under 316 Stainless Steel material though. This needs to be a good quality wire. I haven't seen gears being worn out so perhaps you can keep them as well. This way or another you will need to see for yourself.
I have not seen any shops that specialize in selling spares for exactly that winch. That is why I believe you will need to inspect first and plan for all components purchase yourself. If you decide to go for it remember about the grease ;)
      Cheers

      Hello my friend
I still could not find parts. The main problem is that the screw does not turn and therefore it is very hard to get to the screws and it is not certain that the wheel can be removed without destroying the whole mechanism.
It is very difficult to find spare parts or complete system, and also there are no direct shipments to Israel
Anyway I'd be happy to update
Thanks a lot for the answer

Why didn't the rusted screws get sprayed with penetrating oil to make it far easier to remove them? Very essential to not damage the screw heads.

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 Před 4 lety

There's the constant illusion that penetrating oil is the savior of all bad screw and bolt situations! Well, the reality is that the vast majority of people have no clue about how to use it and apply gobbles of it with little or no effect. Other than spending the oil and money, while making a huge mess and worsening the problem! Yep! Worsen!
Please realize penetrating oil is incredibly useful on the THREADS and face. Which BTW is getting none! So no luck there. :-(
On the screw/bolt head it simply worsen the situation. Where you've got low grip you'll have even lower grip! Leading to a quick destruction of the fastening...
This is a clear case where the patience to "clean" the screw head, would've sorted the desired effect. Penetrating oil on the other hand would simply help destruct it faster. ;-)

    • @christophernation4793
      @christophernation4793 Před 3 lety

@@crpth1 Not entirely true. Penetrating fluid, left for some time, will see past the head onto the threads. It will then be helpful.
      Seep past ...

Just fixed winch issue with Peugeot 308 SW (has the same winch mechanism). I had 3 options:
      - new one for cca 150 EUR
      - used one for cca 50 EUR
      - fix a wire only. cca 20 EUR
Gone with last one, had to dissassemble mechanism and it was fixed within a day in a specialized shop.
