    So that's a NO on taking off the makeup and not having one's hair done! I firmly agree Dame Jane!

    I love her for being feminine and glamorous. She created an image. When I watch a movie or television show I appreciate being taken out of reality and if seeing the girls on Downton Abbey looking beautiful or seeing Joan play a glamour part does it for me or anyone, then that’s something special.

      @@flenif2247 I agree. Shirley was just brash and ridiculous. It tilted the show off balance. I’m SO glad she didn’t return. Jane Seymour would’ve been great too. Or Sarah Parish.

    Joan can play anything she is funny and a well rounded actress she can play in horror films campy films even disco films Joan's look in dynasty was just joan she was doing all that in the 70s she also always loved wigs .. and makeup she can also star in adverts done loads of work for charity long before dynasty she has also had to look after her youngest child who has not had it easy in life simply put Joan is a living legend she is also very funny .

    Bette Davis was an actress first and a star second because, although she did do ‘glamour roles’, she also didn’t mind looking like crap if the role demanded it (Of Human Bondage) or downright horrendous (Whatever happened to Baby Jane). Charlton Heston took a rather dim view of his leading lady, Sophia Loren, on El CID. He didn’t deny she could act but, try as he might, director Anthony Mann could not get her to agree to altering her makeup. The epic spanned several decades and her character went from 20s to 50s yet she remained as radiantly beautiful on the last take as she did on the first. Now THAT is th3 mark of someone who is a star first and an actress second.

    • @ilovemovies725
      @ilovemovies725 Před 4 dny

      Sofia loren is a fantastic actress. She can shed the make up if the part and the film deserves it and play with great authenticity those "italian mamma who have it rough" roles. "El cid" is just a minor typically Hollywoodian stereotyped entry in her filmo and she knew it ( a film with Charlton Heston , in brief) . Try "la Cioccara" (1961) or "la giornata particolare" (1977) to experience a real great actress at work.

    • @gerardmackay8909
      @gerardmackay8909 Před 4 dny

      @@ilovemovies725 ‘if the part and the film deserves it…..’ You’re assuming breathtaking arrogance on Ms Loren’s part there. Whether you, or indeed Sofia, considered El CID a piece of Hollywood dreck beneath her dignity, is not pertinent to anything (she certainly didn’t find the pay check undignified). To not alter her makeup at 26 when she’s playing a woman 30 years older is totally unprofessional, period (I don’t care how brilliant she otherwise can be)

    As an older Irish gay man, I simply adore Dame Joan and her character of Alexis in Dynasty was hugely inspirational and empowering to myself as a gay man - I was only a teenager in the 80’s when Dynasty came out on Irish TV and frankly, Joan is a national treasure to my generation - she is perfect just the way she is and long May she still be with us, along with her beloved Percy ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    As Joan said, her mother and aunts all dressed up, even to go to the market. Back in the 1930s and 1940s, even ordinary women who didn't have very much, still wouldn't be seen dead without makeup and dressed as best as they could afford. Not like the slobs and slatterns in sportswear and hoodies all around us today!

    She seems quite riled and defensive here. The truth is she did some very second-rate films and roles in her career and she should be happy that she is remembered and valued for the roles she did well. She does have quite a small range as an actress. She excels in that range but she is no Bette Davis or Meryl Streep. I don’t think it's that her 'image' and sexism got in the way of a greater career. She found her niche.

      This wasn't her best moment and her husband really needs to shut the hell up. I don't think Joan thinks it through when she snaps at reporters. I've seen her do it a number of times. The only people watching are going to be her long term fans. They don't want to see her like this. Joan wasn't a great actress. She was a star. There's a difference. A great actress inhabits a character, making you forget who they are in real life....for example, Judi Dench. Joan never had that ability. There's nothing wrong with that at all and at 90 you should be real enough to recognize the difference. Still love her now and always.

      I have watched her closely for years. She was very raw and real here. The truth is she always wanted to be a block buster leading lady movie star ,but most times was past up for elizabeth taylor. They tried out for number the same roles. Joan has said herself one her biggest let down was losing cleopatra role to Elizabeth. The competition she had in her day was what still to this day are seen as some of the best looking females of all time. She just lost out to them. We are talking about Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Vivien Leigh. Most top roles she wanted went to them its just historical truth. She honestly should be grateful she at least got to be a TV star.

      While you are 100% correct vanity usually wins b/c how many women in TV and film are in scenes where they are getting in bed, waking up in bed etc in FULL make-up. For most women, make-up has become part of their armor....I give Joan credit b/c many actresses her age fall back from public life b/c at 90.....
