The computer I had didn't have the sound card required to play the music or the sounds properly, so I was limited to the inbuilt PC soundchip, which could only generate one sound at a time. Therefore the music that played was just the bass line, and you could hear the engine, the squealing tires, _or_ the sound of impacting the wall, but not more than one at a time.

As a 7/8 year old in the early 90's playing this on DOS, as soon as I found out you could smash into other cars and watch an instant replay of loads of debris and pixels go flying everywhere, I thought AWESOME. So every time I played this game I just used to smash into other cars and go the wrong way. It was so much fun. Never completed one lap hahahahaha.

Seriously, this theme send chlls to my spine when I hear it for first time!!
Can't remember the exact date, but was circa 1991, we brought a Sound blaster pro pack, which came with a Cdrom X2 drive AND two or three games (can't remember which games) but one of them was this, Indianapolis 500.
I already played this game with a pirate copy, on our XT with Hercules (I DO remember that in that version the car view was fixed, the wheels wouldn't turn at all), By then we had a 80386 DX 33 with 4 mb ram.
We were used to the pc speaker sound... Then we installed the Sound blaster pro and installed this game. When this music came it was just... awesome!! it was feeling that the EXPENSIVE sound blaster pro really worth its money and would change our lives!! (which indeed, did), if I recall the second game we played on this setup was Megarace.

Since there is no save game feature, I drove the 200 lap race only once. Qualified second row in the March (blue car). Didn't have a fast race setup. Would have gotten lapped more than once, but I took advantage of yellows to pit whenever I could. Some of the fast cars dropped out or crashed, while I made up ground on others when they had to pit under green (the AI did not have good pit strategy). I won by about 25 seconds.

Wow, when you switched to the blue car I immediately got a jolt because the blue car is the fast one. Funny that I got that back flash 28 years later. I used to bicycle to the library because that was the only place with access to this new curious thing I stumbled upon one day in the library. This computer which was fascinating by itself back in 1989. This computer though has some strange library of files seemingly coming from nowhere or some friendly librarians had put it there. It was bulletin board systems. I found a ton of fun games including Indianapolis 500 back then, copied them out to a stack of floppies and rode my bike back to my PC with my loot hoping that one of the floppies hadn't died causing data loss during my feisty journey. I even shoplifted Doom and rode my bike over to him so he could copy it because we didn't have any internet. I am so ashamed of it but I was a stupid geek kid. This was the early days of being a pirate, ARRRRRR!!!
This game struggled a bit when entering the crowd area when I ran it on my 8086 CPU and the sound is clearly not the same as a 1989 computer speaker. Back then sound-cards and graphics-cards hadn't even been considered yet for PC's because even PC's were a new thing back then.

Yes, what you see in this video would be a dream set up.
Ahoy matey salute from a fellow adventurer of the bytestream oceans arrr (I got my copy from a friend of a friend who had access to a BBS)
Update: in my defense, where I lived this game wasn't even for sale, you couldn't have it any other way. Update 2: still wrong and I am now a dumb kid anymore. Stay in school. Drink milk. And uhh be nice 👍.
