fun fact, there are blinds that go in between glass layers of the windows (we have very snowy winters, so windows have 2 layers of glass to keep the heat inside). My parents have had those for at least 17 years, and the don't get dirty because nothing gets there. Although they are a pain to repair if something gets broken

I have blinds in every room of my house. They are a pain to keep clean. The dust - at least in my experience - is not visible - maybe because I clean them regularly. HOWEVER, even if you don't see it, you can definitely feel it when you touch it. What's worse is, when you clean it, the slats STILL feel dusty!

Textured bathroom vinyl flooring is recommended for safety reasons for elderly people. It can help prevent falls and the cushioning/softness as opposed to other harder materials can help reduce the effects of a fall. Picking a color/pattern that "camouflages" more could help.

Wicker waste baskets can be washed, as long as they don't have any wooden pieces on them. Run a sink or bathtub with some soapy water, wash them and then let them air dry. Keep them out of the sun when drying as well. It's actually good for certain ones to do this too as it prevents them from drying out. Which reminds me I have a couple about due for a "bath"! @@HelenaMikas they make the actual Swiffer dusters with the short hand held wand and also the longer wand for higher up shelves, fans, light fixtures etc. The duster fits on the handle. It's just called a Swiffer duster. It's cheaper to use the dry cloths that you use on their other product... forget what it's called but you can use it to "sweep" hard floors without using a broom. The dry cloths can just fit into your hand. Either way both work great. Have used both products for years.

We have just purchased a new “flat black” (hubby liked the colour) “square” Stainless kitchen sink. It is every thing I wanted except the colour (and it cost a fortune.) When we put our house on the market in the early 2000s, stainless steel sinks were all the rage, so we removed our harvest gold enamel and replaced it with one. I hated every moment with it. You literally had to polish it dry every time you used it or it looked horrible. Going down the aisle of "smudge proof" stainless steel appliances at Home Depot/Lowes and seeing all the frickin fingerprints and smears is enough for me to swear off them.
You made very valid points that should help many people make better choices, thanks!

I have small area rugs at my 2 entryways and at the foot of my bed. These are to keep as much of the dirt and grass out of my home as I have small dogs that come in and out quite a bit. I recently discovered ruggables, which are washable rugs. There is a base that you put the rug on to. And when it gets dirty, you pull it off and throw it in the washer. The base pad keeps it from slipping. I was told in the past at the senior living place that my mom is at that small area rugs are actually a very bad tripping hazard, for older people.

I love baskets. I never buy the ones made of grasses or leaves because, sure enough, you can't wash them. They will just mildew. But I like the other baskets that have a loose enough weave for good air dry. I collect Longabergers. But I have a lot of other baskets too. I use them for decorating but also they are so useful. Once or twice a year I will drag them into our large shower, the laundry sink or on the porch and I will use Murphy's oil soap, a large soft brush and then rinse them off and let them air dry. My waste baskets are always lined. I use a basket for my desk and I recycle plastic shopping bags to put in it so it's not hard to clean. As I change out seasonal decorating, I make sure to rinse all my fake florals and again I give them 2-3 days of air drying before I put them in storage. I've had them last as long as I needed them to. Then sell them at yard sales. I don't do the houseplant looking faux plants but I love flowers. MOST of the time they can be washed without problems. Sometimes I come across some where the dyes run and those get tossed in the trash. I wish we'd go back to all white appliances. I HATE stainless steel for the reasons you said. First they are overdone and they always look bad because of fingerprints. But, you dare not put in white appliances now in case you go to sell your house. Even if the appliances don't go with the house, it has to be "staged" with stainless steel because people don't have an imagination any more.

I clean my stainless steel sinks with Clorox Cleanup with bleach or the Clorox wipes. They both clean and shine the stainless and kill bacteria. Win-win.

@@traditionalfood367 It kills germs, bacteria. And Covid. “The NHS has even stated that the average kitchen sink contains 100,000 times more germs than a bathroom or lavatory, despite most people thinking that the toilet is the most contaminated part of the house.” And vinegar won’t kill all these. Bleach works, and I rinse the sink after 1/2 hour so it’s not getting on my dishes. But if you don’t clean effectively, everything else is.

Also ceramic floor tiles with grout between the tiles are very hard to keep clean.

I would like to add rug(the one we use in the living room), check the designs on it, get the smooth ones not the one with grooves as small stuff like scraps of food gets stuck in it as its hard to clean, especially if you have kids.

    Great list!
I do have two tips Better quality fake plants makes a huge difference. HomeGoods and higher and decor. Stores sell these. There’s sturdier and don’t collect dust or fade in the sun.
Also, we switched all of our indoor area rugs to the rug brand. They lay very flat, so not as much of a tripping hazard, and they are so low maintenance and easy to clean.

Oh my goodness, I have these kinds of French doors in my kitchen and I hate them. Looking forward to the day I can change them out.

Copper sinks can continue to look nice if you dry them after every use (relatively easy to do - works with bathroom sinks too)

There are french style doors and windows that have the pieces you can remove temporarily while you clean them. Pretty cool.
