Many years ago I knew a guy who was a fantastic blues guitarist. He played in a popular band in a big city and loved doing it. However, he was the first to admit that all he played, and knew, was blues. He wasn't interested in any other genre. I'm sure he could have been great at rock, but he didn't care.
I taught a guy guitar who was better rock/blues guitarist than me in 3 years. And I’ve been playing for 30 years. He had talent but only focused on that style. Your absolutely correct. 9:47
I can see this in my beginner group. I’m the only one actually playing songs, and in 8 months I really improved more than the basic chords, which the group is stuck in. I noticed that if I get back to the basics after 1 week of playing songs what I first struggled became so easy to play.
After years of playing scales, arpeggios, triads, chords in all inversions and drop voicing, etc., up, down, across, behind and beyond (ugh) the neck, the best advice I EVER received was “you play what you practice.” Duh! I could take my exercise routine on tour 😅 but I struggled to play music. This video is spot on. Thank you!
I was in Guitar Center talking to the guitar tech and I asked him how long he had been playing?He said"18 years".Then he said,"and I can almost play a whole song".
My main issue with learning guitar, is that I love a lot of different music. I don’t really concentrate on one genre, I just keep learning new stuff even though I haven’t conquered the other stuff. Once I get to a hard section of music, I give up and move on.
I've spent so much time and money on theory thinking it'll get me out of intermediate hell, i barely remember anything and still can't play 😭. I'm going to use your approach from now on 😤

This is actually such great advice. I can't tell you how many times I have thought, "Okay, I need to learn triads....no wait...scales....no wait.....CAGED system." And If you learn all of those things without learning how to actually PLAY SOMETHING, you will be super educated on theory and not be able to play a damned thing. Ask yourself; what/who do you like? What are they proficient at? Then start to learn some of that...
I have played guitar every day for the last 9 years. I don't practice scales and I don't learn songs anymore because it started to feel like work. I just noodle around for 6 hours or more a day and have fun. My only regret is I didn't start playing until I was 46 years old.
Good advice, well presented, salient and to the point. I always used to think this, like you said what kind of player do i want to be but kept quiet because i thought i was selling myself short. As you say no one can master everything. I feel must lighter now a weight has been lifted knowing i can concentrate on learning a part but more importantly than anything else having fun which is what playing is all about.

This was so so helpful, thank you! I think many players my age (including myself) have been exposed to so many genres and fusions that we try to emulate all of it at once. Building every possible technique before we really try to "play". Big shift in my thinking and I'm really excited to try out this method of practicing.

Great great video! I was getting to the point of being just like the person in the first part of the video. I took a step back, started looking at what i really wanted, blues, open mic, and solo jams, so stopped a lot of the extra stuff, and got back tk learning songs but also practicing 12 bar blues, pentatonics, and 7th chords.
Loved the gag at the beginning and definitely see the sense in what you're saying. But it was the solo at 8:20 that really convinced me to subscribe. I REALLY want to play just like that!
Nice one. I'm here to try to find my mojo again. My 'flavour' leans towards rock and metal, but without the mind numbing big lead guitar that no-one really cares about. I put the guitar down before Xmas when i got ill, now i can't pick ip up. This helps to try and find where from to pick it up again. Thank you.
Yessir, I realized this ( a bitttt late even tho im still young thankfully) when I started to finally try to learn the sweet child o mine solo with the spammy bending. One will NEVER learn to play/understand whats happening there without actually playing that particular part. After that everything started to slowly make sense and basically get to what u said. THE best way to learn the guitar. Heck, the best way to learn everything. Also, stuff like playing without metronome, without counting, letting urself to make technique adjustments and details if necessary to make it easier or just more ' yours" picking pattern wise/fingering/ articulations etc. The best players in the world became so good at what they do becouse they played exactly what they wanted the way they wanted to play

them major an minor scale an Dorian Lydian pHrigian all same just start at different places...Whole whole half Whole whole whole half.. but the notes have to start over like a wheel... depending what place you start is determines what scale you doing...its no mystery
I think problem is many guitar teachers,both in person and on CZcams, went to music school where they do 1st method you joked about and had time to spend over 4hrs day practicing.

I love the point that you cover in this clip. like any other abstract idea it is something that occurs to me from time to time in a fleeting style before disappearing into nothingness, but hearing it summed up and articulated will let me capture it and make it mine. It helps me to fine tune my musical objective compass while I'm the middle of this ocean dreaming of my dream island. Nice video, very helpful. Especially with social media we are exposed to so many attractive ideas and styles it is difficult to stay focused on a goal. Your advice is solid for sure, but the path forward to study the people and styles we like is challenging. For example, if I decide I like Stevie Ray, I am not sure how to learn his licks. Is there some tab for that solo? It is frustrating and time consuming trying to figure out what he is playing. Is his ring finger fretting there? What was that ghost note, was he palm muting?
If you really want to get good at guitar, you have to develop your ear. With a good ear you can transcribe any lick that you like from any player. I will talk about that in future videos. So please stay tuned. Thanks for watching!

iearned most of this in my 10 weeks im now playing..(in the second week i could do spider walk, shred 1 string, scales and open and barre chords (caged) and found then that this is a small part of what is still to learn😂 only thing i dont get yet is if someone say we play together play some in A7sus .... or so or we play an 1-3-5.. i dont know that instantly.. and most things i cannot play at the speed it has to be.. metal and rock is difficult for me yet. and blues like srv with the muting strings all together except the note played but strumm all.. that is a problem for me (also the thumb for more then low e string is a problem how i did it.. i started with the spider practice and then i tried to shred on 1 string.. then i did scales. and then i tried some srv and bonomassa and bb king licks.. i have t played a full song also jot easy ones. i have skipped those at all.. i can play caged (barre) and all open chords easy.. but cant stil play any song. but i think if i try easy songs its easy but i dont feel like doing that yet.. i think if i go kn this way.. its easy later on.. (at first i couldnot play songs, so i thougt i firat want to know and do anything.. then i come back and hope to be able to understand and play it all better) i just did the boring shit first.. and then build op to do more good things. so it becomes more fun.. if i started the funparts.. then even the fun parts where not fun because i could not.. so i thought why not start the boring things now with techniques and such and its worth it.. it played out good for me o and.. i am still not good, still suck enough... so not tthat i want to say i am good or something😅.. but i think (or i think i want faster,, but people around me say im going fast) first 2 3 weeks where the fasters i did go.. but after caged amd barre chords and the open chords.. then the real shit begins.. and then it becomes hard.. especially is you see others do it that easy. and you can play alot and you (i) cant play that
Dang you're learning fast! Just keep it up:) jamming will show you what stuff stuff is in the muscle memory and what you need to study/practice. Realized I learned things pretty easy then moved on before it really sunk in instead of drilling each thing, so 20 years into playing I had to go back and relearn all the parts I missed lol. Learned the fastest playing with a loop pedal and just trying to get good feel with chords and lead. Sounding good is all about getting in that child like state of play and letting loose. Tension is the biggest tone killer. And how good we sound changes day to day so progress can seem weird sometimes. One of the best advices I got was to treat it like a sport. Warm up your whole bpdy by stretching or doing a quick workout and letting your whole body get loose and alert. Its hard to not tense up learning new things but be careful to not play tense by trying to go too fast or play something too hard becasue that tension is harder to get rid of the longer you practice that way. It becomes instinct, so practice relaxed and fun as much as possible. Perfect feel and tone comes when you're totally relaxed and enjoying playing the guitar and not thinking, just having fun and letting the sounds flow out. Can help a lot in the beginning to focus on just one or two keys like E minor and A minor or something until you can play them like a piece of cake. That way you memorize the one scale really well and get the feel connected to your ear faster. Same with chords. Learn to play a few simple major and minor chords in every combination and know them by ear really well and how to play songs with them. Then when you learn a new chord figure out how to use it in songs instead of just adding it to a mental list of chords you know. Realized at one point I knew hundreds of chords on paper but didn't know how to use them in the songs or couldn't remember them fast enough to play them on the spot in a jam smoothly. So just put the work into whatever is the most useful and exciting becasue you can't learn it all. but don't stop growing. Eventually it becomes like a language and you can just play whatever you feel or think, just like talking. It's so worth it to take the time to learn that way and be able to speak your heart and not just copy other people's songs. Idk why I decided to comment back but wishing you good luck!!
@@kashinewell6239 yes the tension thing.. that was my first biggest probmen.. relaxed is way more usefull.. but i still cannot switch barre chords easily like in a song.. that only works still with open chords with me. i can play barre but.. not really switch between them like i do with open chords.. and that A minor scale, idk if thats good but i do the same pattern, almost everywhere on the fretboard.. and it just sounds right so i thought its possible that way. same with the A major but i personally like the minor more.. only i use the blues scale all the time with that 1 extra note on the E string and one extra om the G string.. i have still a lot to learn.. specially the stevie ray shuffle i cant really do that with muting all strings, but strumming all and let ring one note at the same time.. but i am just started so i guess it will come later.. before i also have tried to play guitar and always given up because could not remember 3 chords.. was to difficult. but i learned how easy it is now even blind to play so that canbe later too for things i find difficult now. just dont give up like i did all the time till my 30th haha . i think im now bit at what you say, play alot in the same places, sometimes do the same other places on the fretboard.. but if i can do alot later with that.. then i can move on because i found out that in the beginning 7 notes is not nice .. but pro's can make amazing thinfs with only 4 or 5 so it doesnt have to be that expanded so fast.. i now first try to get most out of the less possible notes.. (i also not yet that good in recognize notes by ear..) or not good at all.. thanks for your advise. i will take that to learn from.
Okay, brutal honesty. You need enough theory to know the white keys on a keyboard are the C Major scale, how the triads and the Major and Minor pentatonic scales and the modes are built from them. You absolutely need to know how to count the beats and subdivisions of the beat in time and tempo. (Rhythm) You will need to learn to sing the Major scale, pentatonic scales, the Dorian Mixolydian, and Aeolian modes and triad inversions in the typical rhythms of the genres you want to play. If you don’t learn these things you will suck at music whatever instruments (tools) you choose to play. Thanks for posting

Nice video, very helpful. Especially with social media we are exposed to so many attractive ideas and styles it is difficult to stay focused on a goal. Your advice is solid for sure, but the path forward to study the people and styles we like is challenging. For example, if I decide I like Stevie Ray, I am not sure how to learn his licks. Is there some tab for that solo? It is frustrating and time consuming trying to figure out what he is playing. Is his ring finger fretting there? What was that ghost note, was he palm muting?
If you really want to get good at guitar, you have to develop your ear. With a good ear you can transcribe any lick that you like from any player. I will talk about that in future videos. So please stay tuned. Thanks for watching!

iearned most of this in my 10 weeks im now playing..(in the second week i could do spider walk, shred 1 string, scales and open and barre chords (caged) and found then that this is a small part of what is still to learn😂
only thing i dont get yet is if someone say we play together play some in A7sus .... or so or we play an 1-3-5.. i dont know that instantly.. and most things i cannot play at the speed it has to be..
metal and rock is difficult for me yet. and blues like srv with the muting strings all together except the note played but strumm all.. that is a problem for me (also the thumb for more then low e string is a problem
how i did it.. i started with the spider practice and then i tried to shred on 1 string..
then i did scales. and then i tried some srv and bonomassa and bb king licks..
i have t played a full song also jot easy ones. i have skipped those at all..
i can play caged (barre) and all open chords easy.. but cant stil play any song. but i think if i try easy songs its easy
but i dont feel like doing that yet..
i think if i go kn this way.. its easy later on..

Dang you're learning fast! Just keep it up:) jamming will show you what stuff stuff is in the muscle memory and what you need to study/practice. Realized I learned things pretty easy then moved on before it really sunk in instead of drilling each thing, so 20 years into playing I had to go back and relearn all the parts I missed lol. Learned the fastest playing with a loop pedal and just trying to get good feel with chords and lead. Sounding good is all about getting in that child like state of play and letting loose. Tension is the biggest tone killer. And how good we sound changes day to day so progress can seem weird sometimes. One of the best advices I got was to treat it like a sport. Warm up your whole bpdy by stretching or doing a quick workout and letting your whole body get loose and alert. Its hard to not tense up learning new things but be careful to not play tense by trying to go too fast or play something too hard becasue that tension is harder to get rid of the longer you practice that way. It becomes instinct, so practice relaxed and fun as much as possible. Perfect feel and tone comes when you're totally relaxed and enjoying playing the guitar and not thinking, just having fun and letting the sounds flow out. Can help a lot in the beginning to focus on just one or two keys like E minor and A minor or something until you can play them like a piece of cake. That way you memorize the one scale really well and get the feel connected to your ear faster. Same with chords. Learn to play a few simple major and minor chords in every combination and know them by ear really well and how to play songs with them. Then when you learn a new chord figure out how to use it in songs instead of just adding it to a mental list of chords you know. Realized at one point I knew hundreds of chords on paper but didn't know how to use them in the songs or couldn't remember them fast enough to play them on the spot in a jam smoothly. So just put the work into whatever is the most useful and exciting becasue you can't learn it all. but don't stop growing. Eventually it becomes like a language and you can just play whatever you feel or think, just like talking. It's so worth it to take the time to learn that way and be able to speak your heart and not just copy other people's songs. Idk why I decided to comment back but wishing you good luck!!
@@kashinewell6239 yes the tension thing.. that was my first biggest probmen.. relaxed is way more usefull..
but i still cannot switch barre chords easily like in a song.. that only works still with open chords with me. i can play barre but.. not really switch between them like i do with open chords..
and that A minor scale, idk if thats good but i do the same pattern, almost everywhere on the fretboard.. and it just sounds right so i thought its possible that way. same with the A major but i personally like the minor more.. only i use the blues scale all the time with that 1 extra note on the E string and one extra om the G string..
i have still a lot to learn.. specially the stevie ray shuffle i cant really do that with muting all strings, but strumming all and let ring one note at the same time.. but i am just started so i guess it will come later..
before i also have tried to play guitar and always given up because could not remember 3 chords.. was to difficult. but i learned how easy it is now even blind to play so that canbe later too for things i find difficult now. just dont give up like i did all the time till my 30th haha
. i think im now bit at what you say, play alot in the same places, sometimes do the same other places on the fretboard.. but if i can do alot later with that.. then i can move on because i found out that in the beginning 7 notes is not nice .. but pro's can make amazing thinfs with only 4 or 5 so it doesnt have to be that expanded so fast.. i now first try to get most out of the less possible notes..
(i also not yet that good in recognize notes by ear..) or not good at all..

Okay, brutal honesty. You need enough theory to know the white keys on a keyboard are the C Major scale, how the triads and the Major and Minor pentatonic scales and the modes are built from them. You absolutely need to know how to count the beats and subdivisions of the beat in time and tempo. (Rhythm) You will need to learn to sing the Major scale, pentatonic scales, the Dorian Mixolydian, and Aeolian modes and triad inversions in the typical rhythms of the genres you want to play. If you don’t learn these things you will suck at music whatever instruments (tools) you choose to play. Thanks for posting
