    "Great Mass of Color" lyrics:
    Quiet as a cradle,
I laid in a middle night drift, spinning
    Hissed at the moon
    Conjured up the flowers
to fix my impression of the gloom
    I feel them all
    Great mass of color
    flooded in my bed
    I feel them all
    Great mass of color
    flooded in my bed
    Dissolving into red
Half awake holding my ghost in the morning
    Sunlight coming down the bend
    Maroon sky on the send
    My great former terror
When trees gave doves the leaves
and I was grim drunk death-
    a stranger to myself
    I feel them all
    Great mass of color
    flooding in my bed
    I feel them all
    Great mass of color
    flooding in my bed
    Dissolving into red
    Can I accept I’m real?
Do I need this affection? Do you?
Do you need this confusion? Do you?
    Living trapped inside this body
    Soft, haunted, waiting, wanting
    Measured change evades real healing
    Taking love with little reason
Seeing you as I was: behind a locked door,
    nervous and a fool
Seeing you as I was: desperate for men to guide you
You are the sea and nobody owns you

They have made so many unique tracks, perfect blend of black metal & shoegaze, that's why they have been so acclaimed as a band, hope they don't fall into simple shoegaze because they would lose their authenticity. I know I'm late, but New Bermuda is probably my favorite album of theirs to date. I'm probably a bit biased on that, I've got some rather fond memories of it and the first time I listened to it I was tripping balls with a buddy's coworker. He described it best: "It's like being adrift in a relentless storm, being battered by the crashing drums and harsh vocals and just waiting for those brief, beautiful moments of calm where you can catch your breath and see the sun through the clouds."

I got into them about 5-6 years ago. I love this band through and through. This was such a pleasant surprise you have no idea. At first I was iffy, because it wasn't necessarily the deafheaven I wanted. But this album is a fucking masterpiece and I've been blasting it since it came out.

This is FIRE. Already got the album pre-ordered, cannot wait.
And for anyone lamenting the "new sound" or that "this isn't even the same band anymore," this: the old albums didn't suddenly disappear. You can listen to them whenever you want if what you want is the old stuff. It still rules. But great bands evolve. I'd much rather see them explore new dimensions and follow their instincts wherever that takes them than repeat themselves over and over. They've earned my trust as songwriters and musicians, and I'm excited to take this ride with them.

We all need a breather album once in a while (but it's just one song so I can't judge the whole thing yet). I like that Deafheaven is doing what they feel is right and not trying to please all of their listeners and critics. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that George Clarke's headspace during this album's recording (this lovely, very peachy pandemic we've all been dealing with) warranted or influenced this change in tone. Still love these guys.
