To be honest, these early Madonna demos are mostly better than the released versions. This song and Everybody are two examples of songs that should have stayed as demos that were released.
Even though it is a great, otherworldly, and more ambient track, I think that they wanted a more upbeat track that fit the tone of a "fun" 80s album. It probably would have been too much of an odd track out so they reworked it to a more uptempo song and changed a few lyrics
Stay and Dress You Up are my two favorite tracks from the album, but this one is amazing! This version should've been on The First Album. I like that early 80's New Wave sound.
While I think Angel is one of the best from Like a Virgin, here is this version that leaves me breathless. The perfect synthesis of punk, synth and pop. Pure gem!
This is freaking magical. I just found out about the Pre-Madonna album, and it was interesting hearing old tracks and demos of her hits, but just from the first few seconds of this song, it had a much different energy to it and it pulled me in immediately. I hope they can remaster this somehow, but either way it's definitely a new obsession.
No words to descrive how much this is perfect: M's voice, interpretation, backing vocals, lyrics, musical arrangement. Definitely my favorite from the pre-Madonna phase (78-81).
StefanDot You bet!! M's voice was always a masterpiece too. Vocal tune, interpretation, feeling in every single word. This song is so much better than the Pop crap we hear on the radio, all the songs sound the same, lyrics don't have any sense.
Wish she had more official, finished sounding versions of these songs, maybe used them as bsides. But she was obviously more busy with other things. This does have a Pet Shop Boys, New Order, And Depeche Mode vibe, very cool
If I knew this version back in the day I would have been playing this over and over and over again. Don't get me wrong I love Madonna since the beginning she can do no wrong but damn this is a good version of this song
Am I just dreaming or did you walk through my door? Do you still feel the same way that you did before? Did you come to bring me sorrow? Like all those wasted days Let's not think about tomorrow You can stay Am I just dreaming or did you say you have to go? If you can't stay forever, I don't wanna know There's no need to talk about it The way things used to be I'm not living here without you [Chorus:] Won't you stay, stay darlin' You could stay, stay darlin' Won't you stay, stay darlin' You could stay, stay darlin' You could stay, stay, stay darlin' You could stay, stay, stay darlin' [repeat] No, no, can't let go No, no, can't let go No, no, can't let go Am I just dreaming? [verse] You could stay, stay darlin' You could stay, stay darlin' Won't you stay, stay darlin' You could stay, stay darlin' [repeat] You could stay, stay, stay darlin' You could stay, stay, stay darlin' [repeat and fade]
To think I was only 4yrs old when she made this I’m 47 now and I’m still for the 80s Madonna not to keen on her style now but I still love 80s Madonna! I still have my posters and everything from the 80s era. I was about 6yrs old when she got my attention and loved her so much!!!
This demo is actually NOT from the Like A Virgin sessions. This was from the demo tape she was peddling around; trying to obtain a recording contract (via 1981). She just re-recorded a version (of sorts) of this song for the Like A Virgin album a few years later.
This was the demo for the 1984 song "stay" that is the last track on the "like a Virgin " LP I like this demo 100000000 times more then the version from 1984 this seems more real to me and much more emotional
I feel this song was recorded 1980 cause I can feel the energy from her first studio 🎙 and studio 54 era if anything 1982 cause I can sense the disco --ness of it.
The beginning part sounds like a completely different song, like they're two different songs, really. I think that she should have redone and added an extra minute and a half to the beginning of this version and released it as a single, along with the later version of Stay, which I still happen to like better.
Tracklist for Pre Madonna. 1. Laugh to keep from crying. 2. Crimes of passion. 3. Ain't no big deal. ('97 edit) 4. Everybody. ('97) 5. Burning up. 6. Ain't no big deal. ('81) 7. Everybody. ('81) 8. Stay.('81) 9. Don't you know? 10. Ain't no big deal. ('97 extended)
I know this is unpolished but this version really lends itself to the dance floor. I loved the version on the album, but this demo had a lot of potential.
I got this on the Pre-Madonna CD. it features demos and unreleased tracks on it like "Stay 81" "Crimes of passion" "Don't you know? and "Laugh to keep from crying"
Not actually related to the song ‘Stay’ from Like A Virgin album at all. Same title and line, Other than that different songs, this is from self titled debut sessions
this is badass!!!!!!!.this beats the lp version by a long shot.but what would i know lol i could'nt write a pop record if my life depended on it.............................peace.
This version is probably in my top 5 Madonna songs. Maybe they didn't release it as it lacks that upbeat punch that most of her songs had at this time especially if you compare it to the released version of Stay. That's all I can think of
How come this wasn't released in the first album? It's amazing, magical, modern and better than I know it or Think of me for sure. The LAV version doesn't do it justice. The whay the intro could be part of Confessions on a dance floor.
This song is so haunting in a way I can't explain
I think so
Out of this world ❤
Raw sounds and voice!! amazing!! 1981 daamn wow aheadd of her time since then!!
Wow how did they fail to release this as the main version. This version is totally intoxicating.
I'm just OBSESSED with this version of the song
Me too, is amazing!!
Stay and Dress You Up are my two favorite tracks from the album, but this one is amazing! This version should've been on The First Album. I like that early 80's New Wave sound.

i love angel but this is so much better
This is Stay, not Angel

This song is one of my favorites 😍
This is so far superior to the album version it's almost unbelievable! This could have been a huge hit. Thank you for sharing this gem!
All of madonnas music is excellent including her unreleased material some better then others ,but they are are good.
Yes it is nice. I heard it (for the first time last night) and the energy and sound is so fantastic. It sounds clean.
I love both versions, but this version does not fit with the album. I have this song on the Pre-Madonna CD. They are some other gems there as well.
It sounds like today’s music the synths
大好き!マドンナ
I really like the demo. It's as spectacular as Madonna herself.
No words to descrive how much this is perfect: M's voice, interpretation, backing vocals, lyrics, musical arrangement.
Definitely my favorite from the pre-Madonna phase (78-81).
Gina Sousa Branco this is a fucking pop masterpiece.
StefanDot You bet!!
M's voice was always a masterpiece too.
Vocal tune, interpretation, feeling in every single word.
This song is so much better than the Pop crap we hear on the radio, all the songs sound the same, lyrics don't have any sense.
Gina Sousa Branco This is much better then the 84-version on the Virgin.album
StefanDot yes ..indeed...MUCH better then the version on " like a Virgin" on the last track this was more "real"
Artister möter artister I think so
This was avant-garde, way beyond its time. This was in the line of Pet Shop Boys. It could have been a great single.
Yes, totally!! She's such a bad ass - I love her!
It sounds like something more from the years 1993/94 than 1981. Sounds ahead of its time for sure.
Wish she had more official, finished sounding versions of these songs, maybe used them as bsides. But she was obviously more busy with other things. This does have a Pet Shop Boys, New Order, And Depeche Mode vibe, very cool
agree, Lady Gaga and your current pop-stars are nothing compared to Madonna
I was thinking almost like an evolved Abba, but couldn't think of what else it sounded like... I hadn't thought of Pet Shop Boys, good call.
If I knew this version back in the day I would have been playing this over and over and over again. Don't get me wrong I love Madonna since the beginning she can do no wrong but damn this is a good version of this song
Love this version more since it's basically a New Wave song, it's more atmospheric and ethereal.
Am I just dreaming or did you walk through my door?
Do you still feel the same way that you did before?
Did you come to bring me sorrow?
Like all those wasted days
Let's not think about tomorrow
You can stay
Am I just dreaming or did you say you have to go?
If you can't stay forever, I don't wanna know
There's no need to talk about it
The way things used to be
I'm not living here without you
[Chorus:]
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
[repeat]
No, no, can't let go
No, no, can't let go
No, no, can't let go
Am I just dreaming?
[verse]
You could stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
Won't you stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay darlin'
[repeat]
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
You could stay, stay, stay darlin'
[repeat and fade]
I think the line is “like all those yesterdays” not “wasted days”
sounds so 80s but in a good way! this song would still sound fresh and new on the radio today
madonna was very ahead of her time ray of light literally sounds like something made today
To think I was only 4yrs old when she made this I’m 47 now and I’m still for the 80s Madonna not to keen on her style now but I still love 80s Madonna! I still have my posters and everything from the 80s era. I was about 6yrs old when she got my attention and loved her so much!!!
I am 19 years old and Madonna is my favorite singer, my idol! And I love any style of hers ❤
Is it just me or this sounds really Vaporwave (actually Vaporwave really sounds like this). It has a dreamy feel to it. I love the 80's.
imagine futuristic video for this song!
This demo is actually NOT from the Like A Virgin sessions. This was from the demo tape she was peddling around; trying to obtain a recording contract (via 1981). She just re-recorded a version (of sorts) of this song for the Like A Virgin album a few years later.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG! SHE SHOULD RELEASE IT!
i love this song
this song touched me really deep, is so intense and intimate
acidburn v
this is a good example of why Madonna is such an artist..if you listen to the melodic chords they're very hard to decipher..
This song is the best, her voice is the best in this song, and you you won't hear an imitation anywhere. My favorite song❣️♥️❣️flawelessly beautiful
Those synthezisers really hypnotized me to this epic sound. Truly 1981. The height of the synth beat.
Super cool electronic early 80’s style. Reminds me of New Order and Depeche Mode
Better than the album version released !
I prefer this version to the album version if im honest! Loved the Like A Virgin era look!
WOW.
This would have been a hit.
Love it...
I like this one better than the other one
This should be the official version
I LOVE this song!It sounds perfect!
This version is so good, I don't even enjoy the album version that much but this is gold, I hope it can remastered and brought to Spotify/apple music
best in this version, should be a single
Am I just dreaaaaming xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo When i bought the In The beginning CD in 2000 and heard Stay '81 I simply MELTED and I still MEGA MELT
This is fantastic!! Doesn't really fit with the rest of the album sonically but, damn!! Pure 80s pop💟✨💟
Omg please remaster.
This was the demo for the 1984 song "stay" that is the last track on the "like a Virgin " LP
I like this demo 100000000 times more then the version from 1984

Oh no! Stay is one of my favorite songs
but the demo is better then the LP-version but i like it to
the are very diffrent
*natural* NOT real FYI 🤦♀️
Tarlan Kasra they may have meant more emotive-as in more realz. 🤗
This is not the demo to the album version. This is a demo, and the album version is a different song all together. Only the title is the same.
I feel this song was recorded 1980 cause I can feel the energy from her first studio 🎙 and studio 54 era if anything 1982 cause I can sense the disco --ness of it.
MADONNA, mi Heroína. Muchas gracias desde España. 👏👏👏👏👏🙏😘❤️

I love this ❤ and it’s a completely diffrent stay song to the like a virgin I like both but this version is right up my street 🎉
I Love this versions, sounds very underground!!!!!
The beginning part sounds like a completely different song, like they're two different songs, really. I think that she should have redone and added an extra minute and a half to the beginning of this version and released it as a single, along with the later version of Stay, which I still happen to like better.
Dear Madonna, please get back with Stephen Bray - release this now - I won't tell :)
This is so lovely.
I love this version but I also love the reworked version on the album. Would love this in crispy HQ

The album version of this song is a mix of this version and another song called Don't You Know.
