I love this film and often watch it back to back with Vanishing Point. Both essential components of my film collection! Both described as existentialist and I get that.
The movie tries to neither glorify or vilify the actions of the characters. The drive and mechanic are doing what they want to do...The GTO driver, not so much. In the case of the Driver and Mechanic, there's no point in speculating about how they're "wasting their lives" because they have no "higher" aspirations. They would probably do much the same, even if presented with other opportunities.
Give me this movie is a gearhead movie nothing about cars and engines wow what an ideal making a movie about the actual subject of the movie. I love the smell of racing gas and burning rubber.
