Hey brother - I had to drop by again! After 1 and a half weeks on this track, I'm STILL getting comfortable getting it under my fingers. I have the 1st half pretty cleanly and accurate - BUT, I'm still trying to remember the changes at this point. It won't be too long now, I hope! This is one of THEE most difficult pieces I've ever tried to lift before! The duration, alone, is a challenge in and of itself! But it's fair to say, that one of my weakest points as a bass player is remembering structure and subtle changes. The "technique" part, at least for me, is cake-walk. Just wanted to say that I'm SO GLAD that you re-introduced me to this classic tune and I hope my version, when I'm ready, will put a smile on your face!
You sir killed that bass line, you make it look so easy with those seemingly effortless precise movements. Can’t wait to explore your channel and see what else you got! P.S. Just Subscribed!
This is more like the original than my interpretation I notice. Handy tips picked up. Thanks! I find learning this, it's the pace and groove and flow that is the trick and takes practice. Yours is great! 😎
Spot on Well done! A fun way to play this is to make a barre with the index finger across all strings at the 8th fret and play the verses in a box shape barely lifting your index finger from across all 4 strings at once and keeping the other fingers straight as possible so the high F is played with the first portion of the 3rd finger rather than the tip. Very economic and an alternate way to approach it :)
@@RichardIresonMusician You can play verses entirely between 8th and 11th frets except the last note (of the fill into the chorus) which would be 12th fret of the E string
@@davidmg1925 played in many over the years but the lockdown has stymied an actual band at the moment. However I'm very lucky to know many very talented players and singers so have been honoured to have been involved in collaborations over the last year or two.
Richard, I have to apologize - I've been back to see this video a handful of times and realized that I've never commented! This is AMAZINGLY AMAZING, man! The cleanliness and execution of this beastly line is utterly fantastic, my friend! It's gonna be a long while before I'm even remotely comfortable playing this - not to mention how long it's going to take me to remember! BRAVO, MAN! BRAVO!

Great job! I know hard this one is to play. You've made this one yours without leaving the original behind. Norman W-R would be pretty damn impressed! I had to play this over half a dozen times, I enjoyed the musicality and beautiful tone. Interested in what your rig was for this song.
Thank you sir, glad you liked it. The "rig" was the Jazz straight into my audio interface, on into reaper. Then added a hint of reaper's own waveshaping distortion then in to reaper's convolution amp/cab modeller. I can't remember the exact amp/cab settings but I can find out if you are interested.

@@RichardIresonMusician absolutely not :-) I used to play guitar badly but still love to watch videos like yours. It appeared in my TL because Warren Huart just released a video on how HMWYRS was produced
@@RichardIresonMusician that's one of the coolest bass lines ever, and I struggled for a few weeks before being able to nail it more or less decently and fluently, yet in a slightly more staccato style. Your fluidity makes me want to work on it, and your fingering positions are interesting too, perhaps slightly easier to do that jacoesque chromatic progression on the A string upper the neck rather than on the D string, as Norman does it....
@@paolozak3014 hi Paolo, good to hear from you. It took me ages to get it like that! The way I did it was to play along with it at around 70% tempo and nail it at that speed then gradually increase to full speed over time. As far as positions go I just did it for my own comfort and ability, I didn't look to see how Norman played it!🤔
@@RichardIresonMusician yes, doing it well slowly at first ends up paying off, doesn't it. But it takes patience, obstination and right technique to get above the clouds 😋 ...where are you from, btw?
Glad you like, thank you. Direct into audio interface, a bit of waveshaping distortion and a wee bit of compression, that's about it if my memory serves me correctly.
Hi, thank you!🙂. As near as I can tell without taking the neck off it's a '73 or possibly '72. It has a low 300,000 serial number. Until recently, and including on this track both pickups were up full and tone up full. On my more recent covers I'm favouring the bridge pickup.
