So why do you assume that when the light is not on that means the switch/light is faulty? Could it be that the electric park brake motor actuator is not applying properly or a sensor is not detecting that it is applied therefore the cars contol unit is not turning on power to the light?
no.. the switch you take out has a serial number on it just get the same one and pop it in it will work with out a problem. just dont get 3rd party ones get original from ebay will cost a bit more will last way longer than 3rd party ones.
when the parking brake is applied should the light on the switch stay lit up when the ignition is on or should it turn off? or does the light only come on when you press the switch to release the parking brake?
ozer han okay, so my light is only briefly coming on for a split second when i switch parking brake off and it only does it once on a running engine. Does this signify a faulty switch to you?

My roommate is having troubles with her 2006 VW Passat. Her parking break is flashing and it keep beeping when she drives. She bought a 3rd party switch and it still has the same problem. Do anybody know that if we purchase the actual "VW replacement" if it will fix the problem? Thanks in advance.
remover the tires, and then remove the motor from the caliper. rewine the socket back of the caliper and you should be good. I am thinking about just separating the two. I can't risk it happening again. some times its the stwich some times its the motor. just rewine the torx socket (t40-35) and it should be fine

I've heard u have to take it to a garage and have it out on a machine to access the code or any new switch won't work because the car don't recognise the switch and the calliper won't work ????? Does anyone know if this is true????
Uschi Mueller-Cajar if the button sticks you can take it out. Open it up and give it a clean. It is a bit hard to take it apart but it is possible. If it still sticks then your best and easy option is to replace it.
Uschi Mueller-Cajar open the side and get a flat head screwdriwer and pust the metal clips that are holding it in place on top and botom. And it should come out.
My Passt 2007 have the same problem but the difference is mine not work, the handbrake not engage when I press P button Now, i alway have to move the stick away from neutral when parking on hill
@@ozerperi do you know how much is it cost ? I have that problem after driving on a road made by stone (this old bad kind of road usually from 18-19 century in Europe). It make my car was like a vibrator, i think it is the reason causing the fault
If anyone actually try to find out why is not working, I can't tell i split my in parts and there is a small plastic with 4 pins and one of them is smaller then others. This is the main reason.

Scott Nunan in my case it was the light when i opened the switch up there is a flexible cable inside that goes to the lights and the cable was broken.

Ross Ayling in my case the light never came on when the warning came on so your one mite be a different problem.

Mine button flashes on and off when I start the car. But it wont release. So the car wont move. Does anyone know how to fix this ?
It could be your calibration motor
One of the rear brake Caliper motors is faulty
Just check for damages /cracks on bottom of the casings
