  • The American Oystercatcher eats shellfish, and he's expert at opening them. Many thanks to these videographers for the use of their footage: Africa Gomez ( • Oystercatcher cracking... ), Claire Herzog ( • American Oystercatcher... ), Port Aransas Wildlife ( • American Oystercatcher... ), and Xoomvids ( • American oystercatcher... ). Thanks also to Russ for his Flickr photo that I used in the thumbnail for this movie ( www.flickr.com/photos/russ-w/....

    I have never seen them eat before. It seems so improbable that they could open an oyster with that long beak, but it is clearly strong and dexterous enough for the work! A fun oystercatcher fact is that males and females can be differentiated by the black pigment (that looks like an extended pupil). Females have more pigment in that part of the eye.
    Thanks for collecting and sharing this information with us!

    • @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME  Před 2 lety +1

      I didn't get to see him eat much either; you might notice that all the footage of him eating was borrowed. 🥴 And I spent hours waiting for him to oblige me. But I didn't know about the high tide issue at the time. We were just visiting the Gulf Coast for a few days, and we came across the one I filmed on the rock jetty. That's interesting about a difference in the pigment of the pupil. I had't read that. The book I just checked doesn't mention it, but it might be out of date or something. Anyway, it's not like I have a chance to become very expert about the Oystercatcher from my home in St. Louis, but it was fun to learn as much as I did and pass it along.

    Wonderfully narrated and illustrated as always Jo. Watched with great pleasure, learning more about this lovely shorebird with that stunningly strong orange bill. Not sure about the crazy eyes though...

    • @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME
      @JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME  Před 2 lety

      Pete Dunne, a birding author I always check with before I write a script, calls them goat-crazy eyes. I had never heard that phrase "goat-crazy eyes", so I googled images of goat eyes. Goat eyes stick out a little and do look crazy. The Oystercatcher's eyes aren't bulbous, but the yellow and orange combo reminds me of the crazy eyes in some of the mad characters in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" or the woman they called "Crazy Eyes" in "Orange Is the New Black."
      Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the movie, Cathy. I sure enjoyed making it.

      @@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME Thank you for responding, Jo. I ended up on your site when A Chick Called Albert posted on August 18: No Idea What Was About to Hatch. He was given 3 mystery bird eggs and as soon as the beak appeared on one egg he said Oystercatcher. So before the video advanced, I Googled the word and hey-pesto-you appeared. We got to see the bird grow up until she was released into the wild. You might enjoy this video. Cheers.

      Without the orange bill, I wouldn't have known what it was. Sure did look scrawny, but then all hatchlings do.

    I live in a part of California where the coastal terrace is so high above the rocky shore that you can barely see our Oystercatchers... except for that trademark bright orange bill. That's the part that stands out amongst all those rocks. But the first time I learned off these birds it was actually by their sound. I was hiking along a coastal trail and heard what sounded like high-pitched squealing rapid-fire laughter from the shore below me lol. Apparently they do that when they're "excited." It has a quality reminiscent of Killdeer, actually. But at the time I said, "What is THAT?!"
    Interesting thing about the Black Oystercatchers on the West Coast though. I've read that South of Oregon they are hybridized with the American Oystercatcher, so you will occasionally see birds with some white feathers here and there, or some chocolate brown instead of black. It makes differentiating the species a little more iffy. I wonder if you ever see any Oystercatchers on the East Coast that likewise seem darker or lack the white markings, or if that only occurs in the Baja/Gulf of California part of the American Oystercatchers range?

      Since I live in Missouri, I've had little chance to observe these shore birds. I wish I could hear what you heard. Your description reminds me of the way Barred Owls can cackle like crazed panthers. Was there any similarity to that?

      I like "as usual" when paired with "wonderful". Thank you. And thanks for asking about my health. I passed the eighty-year-old milestone a couple of weeks ago, and it's true that I can't get as much done as I could five years ago, but my energy is good for someone my age. I can still walk a brisk mile on hills. I'll settle for that ... since I don't have a choice about it anyway. 😉
