Was my first seminar...this seminar marked the beginning of my aikidoka journey...and so grateful for all of the community, experience, insights, and incredible friendships that have grown from this moment.
When I started Aikido (in UK) Chiba Sensei was our technical directer. I think he was the head instructer on my first summer school. He left to go to USA after that the next summer or the one after we invite Waka sensei the founders grandson. I did have the honour of training with him, and he threw me a couple of times. I beleive he is now Doshu after his fathers passing. The thing about Chiba sensei is that yes people in his class where usually lets not say scared, more uneasy because you never knew what he was going to do next. He didn't talk much he just did. But he was much missunderstood and I see many comments on here saying he was not teaching O sensei's Aikido. But he trained under O sensei for many years so who are we to say.His Aikido was very effective I would not like to be the wrong end of his Aikido. I always beleived Chiba sensei was a very hard tough man until I saw a video on youtube of his last interview before he passed. He talked of Aikido being like a beautiful women or princess who he loved but could never attain. So he devoted his life to protecting her. I actually shed a tear watching it. Under that tough exterior was a romantic. Don't judge him just by video. May he rest in peace.
Electrifying bokken, breath-taking. I trained at a seminar with Chiba sensei when he came to Vermont i guess around ‘06 or ‘07, so I knew how hard-core he was. But I’d never seen Shibata sensei before this fantastic vid. Oh my.
There are mats down. I can tell you....Chiba Sensei was amazing. I was grateful to have met him and trained for a bit in San Diego. Excellent training.
OBVIOUSLY they are technically very good. But IS THERE any 'space' for Partner's respect? They talk about "Harmony, harmony" but act extremely violently. Compare with Master UESHIBA, or some of his early pupils like HIKIZUCHI, NORO, and his son (in the french documentary from 1970 titled "LES ARTS MARTIAUX DU JAPON" by Michel RANDOM, where you can see an outstanding demo of pure and soft Aikido technique). This is silly. Engage with a completely uncommitted attack then comply like a submissive puppy dog. The “master” abuses his uke then struts around arrogantly.
Yeah, we want them to get bloodied up in simple demonstration of a technique. Grow up! This is the same in total jujutsu, aiki-jujutsu, aikido, judo, and BJJ. I don’t see people gauging your eyes, striking, or purposely breaking arms and legs in any of those disciplines, and I’ve been exposed to all. A true martial artist dedicates his life to multiple styles and techniques, applying those that are appropriate to a specific situation. No martial art is superior or complete.
So don't visit or train with them - or their subsequent students. Simple really. What is more interesting is why would you feel the need to comment as you did?

У каждого своя реальность. В Японии боевые искусства принадлежали только кланам самураев. И знания передавались только внутри клана, от отца к сыну, грубо говоря. Боевое искусство подразумевает владение оружием и все что связано с оружием. Никаких кулачных боёв не было. Самурай с мечем никогда не расставался. А что такое вооруженный человек, даже не обладающий навыками, это тот кто может вас убить по неосторожности используя боевое оружие. Таким опасным становиться человек получивший в руки инструмент для убийства. А чтобы научиться убивать голыми руками, сколько времени и навыков вам нужно? Лев имеет клыки и когти, буйвол рога и копыта, что имеет человек? Ничего. Сама природа сделала противоестественным для человека "мордобой". И каким ничтожно беззащитным выглядит перед диким хищником человек, до тех пор пока он в руки не возьмёт хотя бы палку. Так вот, когда в поединке, каким то чудом вам удастся захватить вооруженную руку противника, самое последнее что вам захочется, это ее отпустить и вы в нее вцепитесь так сильно, как только сможете)) Карате, дзю до и айкидо это все новодел который пришлось создавать на смену "истинным" боевым искусствам, в виду упразднения сословия самураев и запрете на ношение оружия. Мордобой, это увы забава крестьян, которые не имели права владеть оружием под страхом смертной казни, и не только в Японии. Мы же всё помним как создавался английский бокс))

@@user-tv7in3pc1n You are trying to simplify things too much. Uke grabs hold tightly and his balance is taken, if he manages to let go he will fall flat on his face. When someone in real life attacks someone they commit themselves to the attack, they will most likely be angry not calm. Once you've committed yourself to an attack its not like a video that you can stop, pause and go into reverse, back up you continue in the direction of travel. If the defender move quickly out of your way you will continue in the direction of travel and most likely end up on the floor or at least put yourself at a disadvantage and give the defender opportunity to attack you. If uke doesn't yield or go with the technique he could end up with a broken, damaged wrist, elbow or shoulder for example. Aikidoka train to be able to take falls safely without getting injured. And Aikido is a budo art, its not about trying to beat people up, it's not a sport or competition. Its a spiritual practice and requires self discipline, perseverance, etc. It involves the mind and body, coordination of mind and body

I went to a seminar in around this time period with these guys in Santa Barbara.It was really fun. Great memories.
