What Made Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec One Hell of A Game?

  • The turn of the century was an important one for gaming, as the new and improved hardware of the PlayStation 2 and Xbox provided new avenues for more mature experiences. Games such as the likes of Halo, Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto 3, and of course, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec pushed the boundaries of their respective genres with solid and innovative gameplay and great visuals.
    Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec was released in 2001 to rave reviews, and still stands as one of the most well-remembered games of the franchise to this date with a shining Metacritic score of 95. It's been over 20 years since the game first came out, and as such, it would be a missed opportunity to not look back at it and ask the question - what made Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec one hell of a game?

    To me back then, I literally thought I was looking at the most realistic game of all time. It was truly amazing aside from having to start with that Miata (Sorry but I hated it). And finally learning to drive without wall riding or drifting was a huge change in my gaming career.

      maybe a little dumb to ask, but I am a newcomer to gran turismo and im really struggling with my car always drifting in gt3. I have an rx-7 that I got as an reward I dont remember how and I tuned it a lot and got it to 300hp and I am trying to beat the turbo cup but the car spins sooo much, its impossible to control. Can you tell me how you learned to avoid that?

    • @mojaxon23
      @mojaxon23 Před 6 měsíci

      @@lukah6779 I hate to be that guy, but first make sure it isn't just you driving too aggressively. Next, I'd look at tires and make sure they are high enough quality for the task at hand. If you need, just buy and use the racing tires. Tires make the biggest difference on the performance of most cars. If it still isn't controllable, you might have tweaked something in the tuning like the suspension somehow. Reset to default settings and the car should be at least drivable. Past that, I'd just change cars to something 4WD preferrably.

    The pros of exclusive games, they're optimized so damn fine. Gotta just love how fine GT games run on any PS generation.

    • @dandiaz19934
      @dandiaz19934 Před 2 lety +3

      Ummm... exclusivity has no relationship with maximizing a game's use of the hardware. Most often, exclusivity comes down to sweet deals between the publisher and the console's company. Otherwise, publishers benefit from putting a game out to as many platforms as they can. And then they're adapted to each console.

    • @farhanmahalludin
      @farhanmahalludin Před 2 lety +11

      @Dan-The-Man you could argue that being exclusive to one console means the devs can optimise their games to run as best as possible, without having to deal with the headache of porting it to another system. This is true when consoles back in those days have wildly different architecture from each other. It also helps that Polyphony Digital have inside knowledge of how the PS2 works since they are a first party studio for Sony.

    It is the best Gran Turismo game, in my opinion.
    People who lived that time and followed what happened, like....it was the first time that I looked into a game and was confused if it was reality or a game. It was the main reason why I chose PS2 over other consoles.
    I remember coming to the game store and seeing the replay of the race running in real time, and I was "WTF is this! Is this a game?"
    There were racing games before and after GT3.

      Bro it is my personal philosophy that Polyphony Digital and Sony have some sort of secret technology. There is NO way you can go from jagged 8bit looking Gran Turismo 2 graphics to the smoothest gameplay and graphics of GT3. I remember when GT3 first came out I was speechless. I couldn't believe my eyes. Then more games came out with worse graphics and I was like yeah.... Polyphony has tech that no other game company has and they are keeping it a secret!

    Honestly the way I remember these Gran Turismo games is like when I'm playing GT Sport. Everytime each game came out it was the best racing game ever, not to mention that when you bought the game you went home trying to race right away but no you had to get your license first that was to me mind blowing. Then having to start with a used car a Miata and feeling every upgrade you made to your car along with having to change the oil before you ruined your engine past irreparable damage. When you finally bought your first new car it was an amazing feeling since you had worked so hard with your used car to get you your new car. I'm glad I've been part of the ride since Gran Turismo 1.

      I think I agree; personally I have already said and repeated that GT3 A-SPEC is a game more of aesthetics than of substance, it would have been more honest to classify it as Prologue, which happened with the fourth. Graphics aside it is an incomplete game both in the car offer (imagine in real life going into a dealership and finding only one model available) and in the setting of the quick selection menu rather than its artistic presentation; all things for which GT2 excels and despite this is perhaps the most underrated in the initial trilogy. To give an idea of how the aesthetic impact is deceptive let's think of the comparison between GTA (1997) where this can be identified in GT2 and Driver (1998) which represents GT3 A-SPEC: we must not forget the weight of the content of a game and don't just focus on how it looks.

      holds up even better than GT5 and GT6 because of it's stable 60fps without screen tearing (although it was made with crt tv in mind, and it looks waaaaay better on such tv, compared to any modern screen), and also because it's physics engine just hits really well balance between simulation and arcade, and for sure it doesn't feel archaic at all, probably more polished than many current titles. This would be a great video if you guys didn’t use footage of an Emulation bug where the dirt would clip through the car if you play the game on PC. Was really distracting and not necessarily an accurate representation of the game on original hardware. Again, other than that it’s good.

      Come on, you think these accounts still has a PS2 to record actual gameplay footages? Even some lame graphic comparison accounts are shamelessly using bugged emulation footages now.

    funny how this game was rushed by playstation so that it was a launch game and the gameplay is still amazing and the graphics are crystal clear “for the time”. also pretty sure gt2000 was a remake of gt2 just with better graphics to test how the ps2 worked.
