Everyone has an opinion on what feels good and comfortable to them in a saddle seat. My opinion a good ground seat is important. A horse can feel a fly land because they are that sensitive. This translates that I want them to feel my body structure move through the saddle, cause it will be a cue for them. I feel that a thick layer of synthetic foam will completely change the communication and the way a saddle rides.

My grandpa was one of the last cowboys to drive cattle on the trails to the train yards in the old west. He talked about how he hated when cars started appearing on the land and spooked horses and cattle. This was early 19th century before WW1. He made his saddle himself and it has a hard seat. I have that saddle, over 100 years old and the seat is still good. I could use it today but it is too big for my little Arab. I have a mustang yearling and when she grows up she will have the honor of wearing it. My grandpa rode a mustang named Coco. He spoke fondly of that horse until he passed in 1977 at age 90.
I ride my Arab in an Australian saddle. It has a hard seat. I’ve always ridden in hard seats

I made my own saddle with a hard seat because I had the opinion it was easier than having to make a padded seat out of multiple pieces and layers. My intended solution was to use a sheepskin cover but I discovered I can ride in it for hours with no discomfort. Now I only use the sheepskin to protect the saddle from damage if I am wearing armour.

I'm 72 years old and have been riding a hard seat for over 50 years, on trail rides, working cows and just pleasure riding. Nothing is more comfortable to me.

Distant trail rider here. 68 yrs old. Started using a hard, deep seat saddle about 7 years ago. Love it. Best saddle I've ever ridden in .Also, the padding in a padded seat adds unwanted saddle weight. At my age, I'll lighten up my saddle weight best I can. Happy Trails. Ride safe.

I agree 👍 have friends that ride padded flat seat saddles and yes they are the 1st to complain about sore butt bones. I believe the style of hard seat in ranch and wade tree saddles are more rounded up and over the center of the saddle seat and this provides weight distribution over your entire butt instead of directly on the butt bones

Padded seat. I’ve got a sheep skin seat saver with a gel seat saver underneath it. Very comfy but I get it’s not for everyone. The gel seat saver pad adds a small amount of extra weight to the saddle but not much

If the horse your riding has such a rough trot that you start becoming defensive of your seat bones, rather than a padded saddle try padded bicycle shorts under your jeans. Proffesional bicyclists ride hard seats then add the padding to their shorts. If your not defending your butt, you can keep a much better position.

Whats far more important is what is under the tree, not what is on top of it.

Goood info. Thanks. BTW, I tried to leave comments on a few of your other videos, but the "mechanism" failed. Thought you'd like to know.

Hard seat is the way to go. No padding to wear out, best contact and always retains its beauty.

Howdy, that specific saddles is a wade saddle made by McCall Saddlery. I have a few custom saddles (Jeff Haslam, John Willemsma). Even though this isn't a custom saddle made by one person, it is as close as you can get to being one. They are hand made by a team of workers and I have had it for over a decade. It has survived and stood up against hard times. It is a good saddle and one of my favorites. You can find them at mccallsaddle.com. I hope this helps you out. Cheers- Travis

Padded seat, not fully padded. On all my custom roping saddles.

Hard seat is the only way to go. How in the world can you feel the horse. Second you drive the horse with your tailbone
