I just had the HSG procedure done on my lunch break today, took 2 Advil’s about 30-40 minutes before the procedure. The nurse will collect urine, and tell you to undress from the waist down and take you to a room where you lay on your back with your knees up. She will take some x-rays of your pelvis. Then the doctor comes in for the procedure and he tells you exactly what you will feel, cold sensation, mosquito bite sensation and cramping for about 5 seconds and then all done. He will tell you to look at the tv screen, where you can see your uterus and fallopian tubes. Then lay on your right side for few minutes, turn to your left side a few minutes and one more x-ray and you’re done. As I proceeded to the bathroom, sanitary napkins were available. You feel like your cycle started up again with cramps. It was smoother than I thought, it’s just fear of the unknown. Hope this helps out ladies. Best of Luck! I just got this done today and It turned out great,my tubes were normal Every thing was good! the procedure was a little uncomfortable but not too bad ,just felt like a terrible period cramp

I had it done and it was just like intense cramps that came on suddenly. But if you breathe through it it’s not as painful. It was only painful for several seconds.

Regina Oke oh my goodness i was not prepared for any of what these people did to me 😲😲. I was not offered any pain meds nor told how bad the pain was going to be. I literally was seconds away from kicking the doc in the head and screaming for my mum. They lied to me saying its just an uncomfortable feeling and like bad menstrual cramps 😨😨 the lies they tell, Jeeeez. The pain was bad and if labour is anything like that pain im scared to death!!!!!

When the good doc has something like this done to his penis and prostate while awake and on 2 Advils then I'll believe it's all good. For one thing, the ibuprofen isn't enough to block any prostaglandin cramping this induces. This is horrible pain. Make no mistake about it; don't underestimate it.
Where is the husband? Is he allowed inside to hold her hand and offer support? NO.

The iodine used in this acts on your uterus and fallopian tubes as salt does on a living snail. It's a very strong hypertonic. Which is what causes your body to cramp as your sympathetic nerves go haywire with pain signals. This is also how it can clear some obstacles in your tubes. Just like the snail recoiling and dying so does the tissue lining your tubes and uterus. The force blasts some of this tissue out. If the liquid can't move? Hellish cramping.
It pisses me off to the max to read women radically under explaining the nature and the pain plus cramping that goes along with this barbaric test.
Why not offer sedation and narcotics? Why not advise the husband to come along for teamwork and support? Because he will demand analgesia. And the lazy doctor who's never experienced anything like this just doesn't give a shit. Period.

The cold sensation? Mosquito bite sensation? That changes quickly to a hot sensation and awful cramps. First you feel the catheter violating your cervix. Then the iodine which burns.
5 seconds of cramping? Who the hell taught you to count?

For me it was very painful today it's been my third day since I took this exam and I still feel little pain on my lower stomach. They told me I was going to hurt more than regular girls because I don't have one tube from a previous etopic pregnancy. I guess all women have different experiences

Why is it important to know if you are on Metformin? I am not diabetic but I take Metforminfor androgen excess and hypothyroidism. Is having the HSG test on Metformin more risky?

When the guy shows this whiteboard as his display and not a real living patient for us to watch...run fast the other direction. I bet he sold a lot of used cars on weekends from med school. I don't believe nor trust "shows" like this.
