you don't need the best camera to be a cinematographer

- clickbait title should have been "dp absolutely DESTROYS arri alexa for PROSUMER fx3?!?!?!"
just some thoughts i had and wanted to share. not enough people talk about this kind of stuff. the youtube cinematography landscape can be a lot for anyone starting out or interested. i just don't want to see people losing focus on what matters.
i know the lighting keeps changing. it's from the sun. please don't make fun of me because i can't control it.

The video didn’t inspire me - I still want an Alexa to make videos of my dog, so I can send them to my parents on whatsapp.
And that’s how people feel too!! 😂
you've quickly become one of my favorites among the real ones like lewis potts, blaine westropp, etc. incredibly underrated channel.. keep it coming sir!
Putting me in a sentence with Blaine and Lewis is very flattering. Thank you so much! I’ll keep it up. 🫡
This is great stuff and I agree. I appreciate your perspective. It’s also a bit funny to hear this from your perspective as a DP. I’m sorta in the reverse situation. I’m NOT a DP, and up until earlier this year, I’d never as much as touched an Alexa. But have shot on Sony for about 5 years now including Sony a7siii since it came out. But I now own an Alexa mini, and I feel the complete opposite. IM HAVING SO MUCH FUN WITH IT 😂 I think something about the Sony images have gotten too familiar to my eyes. But the Alexa is making me feel inspired again and considering pursuing cam op or freelance DP work with it. But thanks for sharing your insight. All our journeys are different. But I do wish CZcamsrs did focus less on technical things/latest and greatest gear and more on the art of storytelling no matter what camera. The polarized hype around PYXIS just is nauseating
You speaking facts,,, people spending their last on that camera just to say they have it..real talk
Great video honestly! Appreciate u calling out all of these youtube sell-outs with their sponsored videos. Influencer marketing is pissing me off fr
i have this saying that goes like this "everything you need you have, and everything don't you just want" this applies to almost everything if you wanna start videography you already have a phone or if you dont you can ask your siblings maybe you can use it just for a shot till one day you will eventually own a cam and by then you know how to shoot even before you had one. this saying is supposed to put you out of that mindset of putting limits on yourself just because you dont have what you want. work with what you have not what you dont have.
That is correct thinking of how deep to understand what we create more than what we have
You're a real one. You have got yourself a new subscriber! Thanks for this!
I agree . On another note , the original black Magic was 12bit not 420 8 bit.
FX3 costs almost 5k where I live. Sure, its cheap compared to alexa but it is not a cheap entry camera.
If you ever want to link in LA lmk I have a RED
Not that it matters, but your honesty earned my sub dude 🙏🏽
You speaking facts!! 🙌🏾
I went from a a7s3 to shooting more on my iPhone 15 pro because it always on me creation not the pen the pencil or the brush it the act of creation everything else is just a tool
Yo im about halfway through this video and the standing in a doorway shot for this long is making me anxious can we please get a little more variety or maybe just not this one this one is scary and uncomforting and im a little baby wahhh
You don't need any tools to be an electrician.
Everyone is chasing specs when they should be focused on the look of the sensor. I still grab my sony pmw f3 over the newer sony and canon cinema cameras. The venice og has a very similar film look as well
You nailed it!
Mic drop 🔥
Great vid!!
I recommend magic lantern crop mood (EOS M and Rebel series) for beginning cinematographers, not videographers. The image it outputs rivals pro cameras even today but comes with big limitations like no AF, lots of rolling shutter, low dynamic range (11 stops) and very low HDMI output resolution etc. But what it does it teaches you to work with the camera instead of the camera working you and setup your scenes well before shooting. You can get the camera with decently built out rig and a tripod and a strong key light for about half the price of the fx30.
The thing I love about cameras with low dynamic range is that it really forces you to learn how to light. It could be very hard to light a scene keeping it within 11 stops, but if you get good at it then boom you’re already doing it like Hollywood. Remember the first Arri digital camera, the D21, only had 10 stops. But yes and I came up on Magic Lantern on the T3i so this is music to my ears.
@@mitchellbrinkerdp 11 stops is plenty enough there's a few situations where more is actually needed.
I got the a9iii for video.. was playin no games lol
i saw this video in 360p
as the gods intended
Love this!
100% agree.
Story telling and camera composition is what I want to learn
Oh and also connecting with Film people. acc making epic shit happen, that's what I want to learn.
I saw an epic indie film the other day and all I wanted to know is how the hell the director pulled that shit. like how did you got to this point, explain that shit to me.
Which film was it?
preach 🤘☠️🤘
I still shoot on my sony vx1000
Word!
How do you approach slog coming from Alexa?
Right now I’ve been using CST to take my footage from SLog3 to Arri LogC3 or LogC4 since I’m used to that and have a collection of LUTs I’ve made for those. I just use those and then make my tweaks in previous nodes. That or I used Filmbox and switch it to input Slog3. Truthfully coloring has never been my strong suit. I usually hire colorists. But the TLDR is I approach it as an Arri lol.
You keep that rebel T31 off your filthy mouth! Lol jk. Great video!!
Do we need? No, do people want? Yes.
Christopher Nolan proves the creator mater's more then the gear, he uses a Soviet error lens in his films, uses film cameras, and his movies are amazing.
Thank you for pronouncing my last name right 🥲
