Glad you posted this. It looks similar to one I just purchased. The one I purchases was the lady's great, great grandmother who came to the Wisconsin from Norway. Mine is in rougher shape and someone painted it but I like the metalwork and am going to try to restore it a little at least.

Hello, I have one like it and I want to sell it. How much did you get it for, please?

Your trunk was made around mid 1880's American Made, This is a cross slat design top slats running front to back patented in 1880 by Charles Taylor, most of the hardware on the trunk was made by John H. Sessions patented around 1877, the smooth inner tin was probably what was called crystallized tin, gold was the most popular color, the outer tin was black, without a label almost impossible to say who the maker was as this style was made by hundreds of makers and the hardware was used by all, very cool trunk.

Thank you very much Kim. I found a date on mine as well. Never looked in that spot before. Mine is very clear except for the date. Unfortunately, that info is about the company that made the lock and the date refers to the patent date of that lock. They have patented many locks. It is a good guess that our trunks were made within 2 or 3 years of the patent date.

If it has wheels a date is usually stamped on next to them

I have a trunk that is quite similar and I found a date on the part of the lock that is not the closing latch.
I found a date on the part of the lock where the key enters.
    my date reads as follows:
    "PAT. MAR.69"
I DON'T BELIEVE IT IS 1969 IT IS CERTAINLY 1869 WHICH MAKES IT 153 YEARS OLD.
CLEAN THAT PART OF THE LOCK WITH RUST CLEANER OR WD-40 AND SEE IF SOMETHING SURFACES.

I have this same trunk! I bought it at an estate sale. The one I have is in much better shape in the inside I try to send you pictures but I don’t know how to do that. Mine has a note inside, that says antique wooden steamer trunk, 1869 made in Racine Wisconsin. M. M. SECOR and Company manufacturers. Largest producers of trunks. However, I have found nothing to verify this. The fact that you think it came from Europe, mate be more realistic. as I said I have found nothing to verify that this note is accurate. I would greatly appreciate any information you may acquire. Thank you, and good luck.
