Do you have a quick temper? One of the many beautiful characteristics of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was his amazing level of patience and forbearance.
One time, when the Prophet ﷺ was walking, a bedouin who was following him suddenly pulled his shirt very violently. The man grabbed the garment so hard that it left a mark on the the Prophet’s ﷺ shoulder. He said: “O Muhammad! Give me from what Allah has given you!" What did the Prophet ﷺ do?
🔵 He ﷺ turned to look at him with a smile on his face, and then ordered for the man to be given something. [Sahih al-Bukhari 5809]
There was no fighting, not even a scowl on his ﷺ face. If this happened to us, how would have we reacted?
In another incident that showcased the Prophet’s ﷺ patience was when he sent Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) on an errand. Anas however took way too long, because he came across some children playing in the street and decided to join them. Soon, the Prophet ﷺ arrived and saw Anas playing.
Uh oh! What do you think the Prophet ﷺ did? Anas said:
🔵 ❛As I looked towards him (ﷺ), I found him smiling and he said: Anas, did you go where I commanded you to go?❜ Anas further said: ❛I served him (ﷺ) for nine years, and I have never heard him criticize me why did I do that for a thing which I had done, or why did I not do that for a thing which I had not done.❜ [Sahih Muslim 2310a]
🔵 And Allah says: ❛Hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord and Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those mindful ˹of Allah˺. ˹They are˺ those who donate in prosperity and adversity, control their anger, and pardon others. And Allah loves the good-doers.❜ [Surah Ali Imran 3 : 133-134]
The Prophet ﷺ truly lived by the Qur’an. He ﷺ was patient, forgiving, showed forbearance and tolerance - even though he had every right to be angry or punish the ones who did wrong. Remember, the strong person is the one who can control his anger. May Allah grant us the same beautiful qualities.
