Would you give us a list of your favorite fanfiction? I'd love to hear. Thank you for the video. Hugs to you in difficult times. 😊
Hii!! Will the book club on fable choose a new book soon? We might motivate eachother that way
too sad this is available only for US or Canada :(
PLEASE do a tv and movie wrap up!!!
yessss please
This video came at the right time. I read 11 books in January, 4 in February and haven't read anything since then. I've tried picking up a few books but not able to get into any of them. This happens to me every year where I read a lot and want to read everything at one point and then after a while not read anything at all for an extended period of time. I'm going through that phase again right now. Thanks so much for the recommendations Hannah ❤
She has made such videos in past as well
I have had 20 plus such slumps in last 20 yrs
I began reading (apart from academic/text books) at the age of 11-12
So…20 yrs of reading.
Each year I get slump
Some stayed for couples of yrs of not reading anything.
👽
It gets fixed itself
@@iVGaur it gets fixed when we read books that we love and such recommendations are incredibly helpful to find more books.
the book leo did a video that was like "this vlog doesn't end until i rate a book 5 stars" when she was in a slump and it was so fun seeing the books she picked up and what she liked/not liked about the books, it would be fun to see you do that :)
I thought this video was like that actually 😂 hope she does it❤
I think Haley Pham did that too but she ended up getting a 5 star read right away and decided to keep reading more and ended with two 5 star reads it was actually amazing
I tend to reread my favorite books to get out of reading slumps, and it usually works
reading the percy jackson series got me out of my most recent slump! i think middle grade / ya series are what help me the most bc the plots are fast and exciting and they’re usually quick to read
I am rereading percy jackson rn, bc of my reading slump and it helps. Love this series😭😭
As a philosophy major, I read so. many. books. So many dense philosophical pieces that take me hours to read through 7 pages. I got so burnt out for reading, I hadn't been reading any fiction, which I used to love to do. This video is coming at a perfect time, since I'm trying to curate a list of books I will read during the summer when I'm not being bogged down by academic papers. Thanks, Hannah.
I study philosophy and literature and had to read sooo much theory and it got me burned out for reading too…
as a philosophy student can give me some recs on philosophy books to read?? im an absolute beginner in this n have read sophie's world. thats the closest thing ive read to philosophy..😅 i have interest in stoicism n want to know more on nihilism, absurdism etc should i just pick a school of thought n read works of prominent authors? or what is the way to read philosophy?
@@subhranilghosh8028 for stoicism I really love Seneca and Diogenes Laertius!! Very good portrayals of stoicism that (at least for seneca) is a bit more applicable to our day to day lives and has more practicality to it. I read a lot of critical theory and a lot about social theories of activism, so I really love Angela Davis and Herbert Marcuse. Marcuse's One Dimensional Man was really influential to me as well! But you can really start anywhere, although I will say it's always going to be 10x more rewarding if you have a professor to lecture on individual pieces. Until I got my footing, reading Hegel was like a total mindf*ck for me, so having a prof to guide my understanding helped a lot. Good luck in your studies!!
Just read Piranesi - Susanna Clarke and highly recommend to get out of a reading slump!! It's short, hooks you right away and is just unlike anything I've ever read before. Fantastical mystery and just so fun.
I have this book on audible and couldn't get past the first chapter. I'm wondering if I need to try and read it rather than listen to it 🤔
Vouching this!! It was a wonderful read
Wow! So glad you loved this. I really tried but didn’t get it (tides, vestibules, fish-leather man)?
@@cindyfreese254 yeah it does use some strange language tbh
Reading slumps are the worst, even worse that I constantly fall into one. I find one book I like then I'm at a lost on what to read after and that starts a slump for days until I find another that I can read then repeat, its a never-ending cycle 😭💔
For me, what got me out of the worst reading slump I ever had (post-university when I finally had time to rediscover my hobbies) was to reread some of the books that made me love reading in the first place - so I went back to the children's books I loved as a kid. I think it worked because they are by nature, easy to read, nice and short, fun and lighthearted, full of hope and magic and all the things we miss as adults. It also made me treasure these books all over again, particularly classics such as the Secret Garden, Redwall, Wind in the Willows, Winnie the Pooh, Malory Towers. Adult fiction can be so dark and high stakes, reading is ultimately supposed to be fun!
Someone FINALLY mentions Enid Blyton’s books! My favourite work of hers is St Clare’s! I’ve read Malory Towers (the first six), but I didn’t like them as much as St Clare’s
@@traps-wg3gt i never read st clare's as a child but i was obsessed with malory towers as well as the naughtiest girl in the school!
@@sophie1937 oh ok. I've heard of naughtiest girl as well
yes, read legendborn! Like you said it has some of the most beloved tropes, but they are done exceptionally well and the book also talks brilliantly about some deeper themes that I don’t usually see in YA. Also, Selwyn Kane… that’s a very important reason for picking up the book
Plus the author loosely based Sel and Bree off Zutara, which I know tons of people here love
I highly recommend the books "Demon copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver and "in memoriam" by Alice Winn. Two great books that made me feel a lot of emotions. Especially "in memoriam" was incredibly good (and sad) and one of my new favorite books of all time
I'll second "In Memoriam." It's an all-time favorite now and I haven't stopped thinking about it since I read it. So haunting yet beautiful
I’m another huge fan of in memoriam , it was incredible. I Highly recommend. I’ve been in a reading slump since reading it 🥹
I’m 320 pages into Demon Copperhead right now and OMG. It’s a page turner. I wish I could take the day off of work to finish it
oh my god i've just started reading In Memoriam this week and I'm obsessed. I'm about 130 pages in and I'm already so attached to the characters that I just KNOW I'll cry. And the writing style is so beautiful it should be illegal
Recently the Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin got me out of a reading slump. One of the best fantasy series out there.
Same gurl😭. I've read only 1 this year cuz of college and I am trying to read one. Hopefully I'll get out of my reading slump.
I would recommend audiobooks! I go to university and I just do not have the time to sit down and read, but I can listen to the audiobook while cleaning, eating and walking to uni. I have almost finished the book I started 3 days ago! It does wonders and it makes me happy cuz I get to enjoy a great story while I do daily tasks.
@@bxtxl7831 oh that's awesome. Thank u but I can't really listen to audiobooks cuz of the language barrier as English is my second language and it doesn't hit that much in my native language 😂
@@Yam179 omg English is not my first language either and Ik what you mean. Hate reading or listening to books in my native language hahahaha😭😭
@@bxtxl7831 haha I hate this fr 😭
I don't know if you'll see this, Hannah but I thought I'll mention a few books that have a high potential to end reading slumps. These are only the tip of the iceberg because my extended list would be endless.
1) The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See.
2) Minor Detail by Adania Shibli.
3) Four Treasures of the Sky by Jenny Tinhgui Zhang.
4) The Mountains Sing by Nguyen Phan Que Mai.
5) The Finlay Donovan series by Elle Cosimano.
Hope you have a lovely time conquering your slump with these incredible books.
The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee is a great series to get one out of a reading slump. Interesting -- but easy to comprehend-- worldbuilding/setting, amazing cast of characters/relationships/dynamics, and a fast-paced, attention-grabbing plot. In my opinion, the series was well worth the hype, and the books were certainly hyper-fixations for me. There is a lot of amazing fanart for the series out there and I flooded my twitter TL and tumblr dash with it all as I was reading and becoming more and more obsessed lol
Boy did you nail it - I always went down a fanfic spiral when I was feeling depressed, and it never really felt good in the end. I am pushing through my slump with short translated works by women. Cold Nights of Childhood by Tezer Ozlu was fjdgaakahd STUNNING. Maybe would describe it as a distant relative of The Bell Jar. My next is Nefando by Monica Ojeda - about 6 people who get caught up in a horror-core cult video game?! Yes. Yes. Yes. Good luck getting out of your slump - thanks for sharing your recs!
This has actually been the best reading year, so far, for me since maybe...2018? I used to only read books if I could finish them in one sitting. But this year I've made it a goal to read at least an hour a day (usually right before bed) everyday and it has worked wonders for me. I'm currently on my 19th book! I hope you beat your reading slump soon! 😊
I NEED to get to Legendborn too! I have this thing with books where I’m really excited to read them but put them off because I’m worried I won’t like them. I’m working through that mental block because I don’t want to deprive myself of happiness.
OMG! Legendborn is my favourite book. Bree is a great main character. She is smart, curious, and kind, in the best way possible. I found the plot incredibly interesting, it’s based off the King Arthur myth and the magic system she uses to bring everything together is also good. And one of the best executed things is Bree’s connection to her heritage and her exploration of family relationships.
I think you've convinced me to read it! I'm hoping it's the new pick for the book club this month
Reading the Harry Potter books and the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is what put me in a reading slump. I just… I never recovered. Ever since then I’ve been looking for something that can compare or is at least on par with either of them.
I absolutely looooooved Rouge I think about it constantly
I just read the Winternight trilogy for the first time and I really do think you would love these books. They're some of my all time favorites now and some of the best pieces of storytelling out there.
i was WAITING for legendborn, i knew it would be here. reinvigorated my love for reading when i read it this february, can't wait for you to read it too!!
i have rouge on my kindle for months now and haven´t been in the mood to start it but the way your love for books transpires when you talk about them is so contagious!!! I'm starting right this minute
about not feeling like yourself when you go too long without reading, I relate so hard. I start feeling like I cannot find enjoyment or happiness in anything and get very restless and impatient. So when I know nothing is working, I go to read.
Also, reading slumps are hard, I've been in one this year too, luckily it broke in March with the Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu.
Thank you for keeping me company with a new video while I cleaned my kitchen. Always love getting a notification! ❤
This year, I've really only been able to get into books via audio. Physical reading has been so hard for me! So this video is a godsent
I have yet to read a book this year. I don't know why but I'm in such a slump. Perfect video for me! Thanks!
Hannah everytime you posts a new video it's makes my day instantly😀😀
omg I feel like everyone has been in a mega reading slump this year. the last book I read was also mid-february, I've only read 4 books this year too, and the next book that I'm picking up and hoping it would get me out of the slump is legendborn as well. hope this works out for the both of us 🥲
A few I highly recommend are Sword of Kaigen, The Fifth Season, Kaikeyi, All My rage, and The Tainted Cup. They are all ones that I think you would love and could be good for getting out of a reading slump. Hope you get over your slump soon!
I have kaikeyi and all my rage on my shelf just waiting to be read.
Im reading Tainted Cup right now and really enjoying it
I really feel you…I’m in the same situation right now. Maybe because I had so many great reads last year, nothing is good enough at the moment. So this video was exactly what I needed, thank you ❤
Omg plz plz make a vid of all the movies and series you've watched so far!! Would love some reccs
Your clockwork reader journal has been beneficial in getting out of my reading slump. I've also challenged myself to read something new once a month.
yess please make a movies and tv show video, I need recs
You’re a spot of joy in my life, which I need right now.
I've had my eye on a few of these but it's been really hard for me to focus on books in the past 5 years even though I have finished a decent amount of books. Comics/Manga gave me a nice change of pace in between novels. Reading books similar to movies and tv shows I'm watching has helped too, but weirdly enough, listening to white noise and ASMR as I read helped the most. It helped quiet my constant thoughts and the outside world and made me focus on just the book I was reading. Just finished An Education in Malice which I couldn't put down.
I have been in a reading slump too 😭 This video came at the perfect time 📖
my current read has been sitting on my bedside table for over a month because I'm so deep in the ao3 rabbit hole I needed this 😅
To be honest, ever since you once made the comparison between a certain fantasy book I sadly don't remember and Riza/Roy fanfic, I've been waiting for your reccomendations! Thanks for the video :)
legendborn changed my life it was so good. i was in one of my biggest reading slumps of all time right around when legendborn came out, i decided to pick it up just to try. it was so good that ive been reading pretty consistently since so it definitely got me out of slump. please make a video if you do read it 🙏🙏🙏
I would love to see your video about the shows and movies you watched!
I know you are probably super excited for “heir” to come out later this year, (as every ember in the ashes fan probably is), so one book I’m reading right now that reminds me of the series is “we hunt the flame.” It’s dazzling, magical, and reminds me of the best parts of the ember series (aka the vibes and the enemies to lovers). I know you had this in your tbr for this year and I think you’d eat it up.
i've been in a slump too--s
started lots of books i actually was really looking forward to and dnf'd about six in a row
Thank you for this video, Hannah 😢 I'm also in the worst reading slump ever since mid October last year, and since then I only finished one book 😭😭 Hope I can get my reading mood back ASAP
legendborn will be a great book to get out of a reading slump. it was the book that got me back into reading and one of my personal faves. you’ll definitely enjoy it!
What you said toward the end about coping with depression by re-reading familiar fanfic... girl, same lol. I also check out photography-based books of gardens and art styles. Low brain power, getting the joy-producing pretty pictures without adding to already excessive screen time. loved the vid!
I asked the universe to end my reading slump as it has been frustrating me to NO END so early in the year and here you are 😭 thank you sooo much
I found that being in your book club in Fable pulled me out of my reading slump! We could help you! We'd love having you interact with us and tell us how you feel about the books we read ❤️
I love Legendborn! It’s such a fun YA story and world. It’s a King Arthur’s round table rewrite.
I was literally just thinking “wow, I could really use a new Hannah video rn..” so huzzah! I understand you have The Bear And The Nightingale trilogy on your list of books to read this year? If it’s any help - those really helped me get out of a slump. Book one can be quite slow, but once you get into it you get properly hooked - at least that’s what I found :,)
Ohh my goddd you are going to read legendborn !!!!
Okay now I am crying
This book is beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️
*sitting and waiting patiently for all the videos you mentioned you may/may not do*
I'm always super supportive of Bookterneters doing film/tv content since its just storytelling in a different medium so will absolutely watch a video or two (or whatever number) about films/tv shows consumed!
Also videos about fanfic...was basically raised on fanfic since there wasn't really any popular queer books/tv shows out there when I was growing up and realizing I was queer so I had to find it myself, so v interested to see what that video is about.
Also I find that audiobooks as well as epistolary/multimedia type stuff helps get me out of reading slumps. Makes me really wish that there was lot more non-traditional format books out there cuz I LOVE that sh!t!
Legendborn was the second book I read this year and I was in love!!!! I immediately picked up the sequel right after! It’s so good, the lore is really what got me hooked AND the little love triangle.
I am HERE to vouch for Legendborn. Read it two-ish years ago and loved it, currently re-reading it with my book club and re-falling in love with it. The worldbuilding is amazing, characters are all so well written, pacing feels fast and yet slow but not in a sluggish way, like you really get to enjoy absorbing all the lore and character moments.
hannah you bring so much light to my day!!!
Oh no😭. Reading slumps really suck and I was in one like this last year. For seven months I couldn't get out of it.
What got you out of it?
I just finished LegendBorn and it was so good!!!! It was so fun yet to sad, and the overall story I was so invested in. I think the writer is so talented and the way she ties in real world events into her story is immaculate. If anyone loved Ninth House, they kinda have similar vibes
I highly recommend Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher to get out of a reading slump
Noted! Thank you ❤
I’m in a massive reading slump. That book “the last tale of the flowerbride” wrecked me! I looooved it so much that nothing matches it. And I read it in July! I started “The Starling House” and I think this might be it, it’s really good.
Using a reading tracker motivates me to read. It's the dopamine hit when a fill in a box.
I like similar romance books to your taste: with emotional dept. Last year Abby Jimenez brought me out of my reading slump. It started with Part of your world and than continued with Yours Truly. These are my favourite contemporary romances now. They have wonderful audiobooks and you can buy them in your BotM subscription I think. Happy reading Hannah! 😊
Generally when i’m in a reading slump i just read one of my comfy books again and it works.
Sometimes you just end up reading an average book or a bad one and it just slows down your envy to open a new one.
And more than often if you just finished a complicated one to understand you just need to read a simple one to let your brain breath a little 😊
Same my reading slump makes me feel weird. I just want to get engaged like I’m used to but for some reason I’m just not clicking with anything, for me part of it is stress. Good luck
the gasp I gasped when you pulled out Lady Macbeth.... I have been dying for this book for a year now. I hope you love it bc I feel like it will be my fav of this year
I on a look out for my kinda weird books too, to avoid slump I take a small break from reading like a day or two n then quickly read something short.. else the gap just gets prolonged into a very loooooooong time
Legendborn is my favorite YA series of all time!! I hope you enjoy it!!
Me too. I've literally only read Babel this year.
omg same i’ve been in a slump since mid february 😭
I'm glad I'm not alone. Life has been rough lately most days I just don't feel like reading.
i would love to hear what you've been watching lately!! i trust your taste in books and id love recs from you in other medias as well. i really loved the video you did on the live action avatar recently so if you wanted to branch out to TV/anime/movies/what have you i would definitely eat it up!!
Omg please do a vid on tv shows and movies you’ve been watching I would love to get some recommendations
I loved loved loved legendborn so much I bought the physical copy as an ebook reader and it’s such a rich world!!! Also the main character is actually so well written
I also wanna see the reviews of the monthly books you are choosing on FABLE
My tip for getting out of a reading slump are binging short books :
- novellas : i recommend The Deep by Rivers Solomon
- manga : i started reading Yona based on your recs, i also love spyxfamily and plan to start attack on titan
-middle grade books/series
And also prioritizing sequels and finish series to feel even more productive!
Hope this helps❤️
Anything by Freida McFadden helps me get out of a reading slump. Something about the familarity and mystery just keeps me reading and wanting more.
Hope you'll get over your reading slump. Mine has lasted almost a year 😬 but audiobooks got me through the bad parts. Also catching up on manga series & Anime Shows. I'm slowing getting out of the slump 😄
Same here ! I feel like nothing that I read makes me feel anything. It's all "well it's an ok book, not bad, not good". I want to FEEEEEEL something again! I hope we both get out of our reading slumps ! :)
If you need tips on reading when your in a slump i recommend to reread some of your favourites. I have done it and it helps a ton.
a series to get totally immersed in- the fairyland books by catherinne m valente. they are like nothing else out there, so whimsical but the characters are still so full of life. im working my way through her oeuvre, the fairyland books were written to be more accessible to younger readers but that means they read easier! they don’t have a lot of the YA fantasy vibes, though if thats what you really want.
Read the bear 👏 and 👏 the 👏 nightingale!!!👏
You already think you’re gonna love it, since it was on your 24 books to read in 2024 girl!!! I see you.
You want immersive (Katherine Arden’s writing SO does that. It reminds me of laini Taylor’s writing in a way) You will just get completely swept off your feet. It’s historical vibes also which we know you love!!!!!
The series is complete! It’s about a girl halfway in the real world and halfway into a fantasy world and she’s like the one who can save everyone with her magical connections and there are demon spirits like girl it’s everything you need right now!!!!!!
Sadly I didn’t like the audiobook for it at all though so I don’t suggest going that route (some people like it though so maybe sample it and see!)
I made a separate comment recommending this trilogy but yes yes yes! The writing and the feminist themes and messages are spectacular and so powerful.
I LOVED Legendborn!!! I read both books in a few days and I can’t stop thinking about them. Unfortunately those are the books that PUT ME in a reading slump and now I’m trying to find something else to read 😭😭
Legendborn is soooo good!!! 😍
I'm with you Hannah. I'm struggling to read. It's really hard 😢😢
same boat omg I would acc recommend trying some comics or manga! I find them very accessible when I’m not in the perfect mood to read. A personal series I lovvvee is Giant Days. It follows three friends through college shenanigans and every character is so memorable and the art style is super lively. The characters are all weird and imperfect but they’re also sweet and thoughtful. It’s not a series reliant on cliffhangers but once I started reading it, I couldn’t stop :)
I have also been in a slump (at the fault of SJM) and I am so ready to be out of it! Happy Place REALLY hooked me but now I need something just as good eee
Rereading my favorite series almost always gets me out of a reading slump. And then similar to a reading slump, sometimes I have trouble picking a book when I have so many I want to read (and usually im reading a lot of books consecutively in the same genre). What happens I'd I try reading one of the books but I'm so ready to read one of the others that I'm not enjoying it. So when this happens I have to switch genres. Recently happened this year. I read all fantasy and I have so many I want to read, but mid-march I switched to nice and fluffy romances and I've read a good 10 books since then 😅🙃
The Poppy Wars series got me out of my reading slump. Legendborn is AMAZING. And it just gets better in the second book.
Hannah I miss ur content!! Legendborn was such an amazing series. I’ve actually met Tracy at yallwest back in 2019 and she told me it’s going to be a 4 book series!! Also jealous that u got Ava Reid newest novel!! That’s one of my most anticipated reads for the year
i LOVE Lapvona so highly recommend
Yesss new video!!
Btw Hannah are you planning on doing The hunger games videos you talked about? Like for each book?
I'm sorry that you’re in a reading slump. I know the feeling and it sucks, and I hope that something will put you out of it. For me, rereading favorites works.
That aside, I would LOVE to see videos on the things you've watched. It's fun to see you discuss every piece of media, I still love the video you made about your favorite tv shows :) I would love a part 2, if you’ve found enough new faves!
On the topic of movies, this year I've watched Hedwig and an Angry Inch, a musical about a drag queen born in the same year that the Berlin Wall was built. She was raised in East Berlin, but moved to the US with an American officer. The story explores her journey to herself, her love life, and struggles she overcame. And the music is AMAZING. I watched this a few months ago and I can’t stop thinking about it nor listening to the soundtrack. I don't remember hearing you talk about it, but knowing your tastes I think you'd at least appreciate it.
Wishing you the best!
the book that got me out of my most recent reading slump was an immense world by ed yong :) he makes learning about the complex ways animals experience the world so fun and easy to learn about
I had an absolute blast reading the Bone books by Jeff Smith for the first time since high school at the start of this year. Guess that's my recommendation!
Legendborn is OUTSTANDING. I believe it is the magnum opus of several genres, specifically YA fantasy, YA urban fantasy, YA mythological retelling, and YA dark academia. This book means so much to me I can’t put my love for it into words.
you could try light novels. im currently in a reading slump too and i've already read two LN and it's helping! i can't recommend you any tho since idk what genre's you'd like to read? but definitely try it out, i recommend
The first and still only book i read by otessa moshfegh was death in her hands. I think you would really like it. First i thought it was a simple and and underdeveloped book but i found myself thinking about it A LOT after reading it and loving it now!
I get into slumps when I go back/ find other hobbies to do. I have no idea why, but it’s like my brain refuses to make up space for books and other hobbies so I’m constantly in a slump.
john green's book "turtles all the way down" comes out as a FILM on may 2 on hbo/max
realistic depiction of mental health struggles (mostly ocd)
i just re-read the book & i enjoyed it even more the second time. the ending made me FEEL something
