Bulgaria's Abandoned Children Find Hope (Amazing People Documentary) |

- In the hills of rural Bulgaria lies Mogilino, a small village whose main employer is the children's Social Care Home - where 75 unwanted children are growing up. Few of the children can talk, not necessarily because they are unable but rather because no one has ever taught them how.
With extraordinary access, director Kate Blewett takes us into this tragic silent world. She meets children such as, Milan, the gentle giant who spends his days doing chores and watching over the others, and mildly autistic 18 year old, Didi who is able to talk, and has plenty to say, but no-one to speak to. The children that surround them suffer a variety of problems, many are blind or deaf and some are unable to leave their beds, many are literally wasting away.
Abandoned into the hands of the staff at Mogalino these children inhabit a bleak uncaring world, so devoid of normal everyday stimulus that many have taken to rocking slowly and constantly in their chairs just for something to do.
Bulgaria has more institutionalised mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe. This film is a heart-rending and eye-opening look into the life of one such institution.

I am so happy those children were saved from those uncaring hands. So happy to see Vasky doing better and talking again ❤
Not uncaring, working with all they have and can do . No funds, staff only do what they are given to work with.
Back in Rome they just piled them up in a place and literally left them to die . These are truly poor countries.
What about the pos who beated the boys? Still not a bad person, but bad circumstances? @@tinygrim
@@tinygrim They were literally HIT and physically abused… You can have nothing but still make sure they’re treated with basic respect. They showed no kindness & were nonchalant when these children were crying in pain… They were abusive towards those with no voice. You do not need money to show compassion
@@tori8925 I saw that after towards ending. I'm sorry.
I am sorry to say this ,but it is not " the uncaring hands", but the fact this places are nearly surviving , the government doesn't give them enough money to care properly for the children, and some nurses there also don't receive very moth salary and most of them receive around 400 EU which is extremely little
I watched the documentary years ago & never forgot these children. I wish we could see how they're all doing now.
I saw a clip from somewhere a while back that unfortunally for Didi, she ended up somewhere that set her back... She was so happy where she was at before and yet ended up somewhere else where she was isolated and lonely again…
@@geochan92how horrific 😢. She had so much potential to be a fully functional adult.
@@Livingtheinvisiblelife she did.. she was visited back in 2019. She ended up after a little digging in a place that’s isolated for people with schizophrenia and elderly, she wasn’t supposed to be there since she doesn’t have that diagnosis. My son came from an orphanage in E. Europe. He was in bad condition, sick and looked like crap when he got home. But with love, his family and good food, he became healthy, normal and beautiful in just a short time. GOD Blessed him with healing and a full recovery with no negative, permanent damage. Praise GOD! ❤
No...praise you for doing a great job
Why would you praise god? Why would a god just choose 1 child and let the others rot away??
@@winifredherman4214 Ms. Herman,
I can't know the outcome of the other children and I have often thought of them, trust me! GOD does not control humans with a remote control or there would be no freedom of choice. Humans make bad choices which hurt other humans (this we all know). But, I do know what GOD did for my son so I can Praise HIM for that.
Thank God and thank you ❤❤
The proper preise should go to Jehovah God as that is his proper name
"He's not sick as far as I can see" just absolutely baffled my mind. HOW can you look at that emaciated, suffering child and say he's not sick??? This whole documentary is heart wrenching. I wouldn't have the patience that woman does if I heard THAT as an acceptable answer. God, I pray for these children, they are all children of God and have a purpose and a light. 💔
The mentally disabled and mentally ill are not dirty secrets to be hidden away made fun of, mistreated or forgotten. Sickening what the human heart is capable of.
Life is harsh sadly. Humans are the only species that even care for the weak, and many do not have the resources.
Yeah, even nowadays... I sadly at 60 still can clear a room 😢 people don't like others with mental health issues that are from trauma and PTSD.
Could you imagine the uproar if they were dogs. Omg the UN would be involved.
@@TeyannaWilliams-pu6uu yeah, or cats. I love my pets. But I've said that before too.
You're right. But there are places like this dogs and cats spend days and years and no one really cares either.
Seems anything that doesn't benefit humans are neglected, worse today than ever.

Kate is an amazing woman! What an angel 😇! She saved these children from a horrible situation. I watched the original full length versions a few years ago and it is still heartbreaking to see these children neglected. I'm a developmental children's therapist. Some of my clients are like these children. Once they are adopted or rescued, they come see people like me for therapy that lasts many years.
Thank you for all that you do.
Such horrendous suffering…💔 Thank you to the reporters that discovered this and got those children help.
It is just so sad to see these poor people being treated like this....Thank God Milen, Misho and Didi and Vasky are all doing so much better....I can't imagine just abandoning your kids. Such heartbreak. Be well, peace & love from New Zealand.
I’m only a few minutes in, but seeing the children rocking themselves breaks my soul. This is a coping mechanism. Children need that rocking and loving soothing motion, it feeds a part of their soul and psyche that cannot be fed in any other way. When not met, they learn to aggressively rock themselves. It’s the only way their needs are met- to meet them themselves. What a horrific reality for a 3 year old.
😞😞😞😞
Few seconds
It is called hospitalization.
@@hamatoJade it’s called “institutionalized” behavior. And it’s completely unique to kids who aren’t properly cared for.
@@DiZoSoMom about the term I stand corrected, it is "Hospitalismus" in German and I thought it would be the same. But it is not exclusive to children. Also older folks with dementia or grown ups with mental disability can get it.
Eine der traurigsten Reportagen die ich je gesehen habe. Es schnürrt einem das Herz zu😢
I have experience working with adults and children with special needs. All they need is love, patience, and respect.
special needs is a euphemism, just call us disabled
It’s amazing how these people change when they are treated like human beings!
I am so happy this story had a happy ending, I was so furious during most of it. Thank God tht lady reported about this without her there would of been no changes.
I watched the documentary years ago and it still is the most horrific film I have ever seen! I hope from the bottom of my heart that these children are ok and better! ❤ Lots of love from Finland.
While this one is very sad, have you seen the “crying rooms? “About the Chinese infant orphanages? That is really sad.
@kellymurphy6642 it’s not a competition for who has it worst. and i actually found this one more upsetting anyway. but all these children are in so much awful and unnecessary pain. both documentaries are very eye-opening and painful to watch but necessary for awareness. filmed a long time ago but i am sure still very relevant. if not happening in the exact same place and even to the exact same people, then elsewhere in the world and to others just the same. it’s so sad and evil.
This is just heartbreaking. I’m so glad that they were moved to a better home that took better care of them and respected them. The change in their faces was blatant. I loved seeing them finally smile and thrive.
Misha is such a carring person, he was so worried for the host and her crew. He may not be able to communicate as well but his heart is so big.
The director of the hospital making a joke out of it saying she would stay there herself if she could is so sad man. She should be subjected to the same treatment they force on those children. How horrible.
She didn't know what to say. I don't think she wanted to be interviewed. At the end of the day, she lost her job. They all lost their job when the orphanage closed.

You can see that all these children are malnourished. You see that they are completely lacking in any sort of affection or human comforting.
This is heartbreaking
Why did they not feed them ?? How can someone leave their own child in such facilities? I can’t understand
It’s too painful to watch. I had to shut it off. I can’t understand how the nurse who changed the child’s diaper wouldn’t give the child affection. It’s so painful.
@@shibamom607 Human race really disgusts me most of the time. Why even bother to keep them there ? They’d probably be better off in the streets

I have never cried so much watching anything in my life!
Thank for caring and loving these beautiful souls
As someone who worked with disabled adults for 10 years, this horrifies me. The way they are treated is disgusting.
Eu estou horrorizada com essa situação 😢😢😢😢😢
It's beyond comprehension why this is allowed to go on. From birth till death...
So sad one to have a disability and two to be abandoned by loved ones 😔
and then three live a neglected, inactive life in a poor country with very poor attitudes towards people like them and very little care and attention and even blatant and uncalled for hate and abuse.
I can't imagine not writing my child back... 😢
The mother never received the letters, because she made sure to not get in any contact ever with her daughter….😪
This was quite hard for me to watch😢
Can't fathom how Migilio's director and her staff were sleeping at night.
But…
I was overwhelmed with joy at the end to see the great transformation of such vulnerable young children lives. Vasky most definitely was at "death's door" had she not been saved!
Nothing but pure neglect.
Thank you for exposing that "Death Camp!!!!"
why should they not sleep? They did what they could, with what they had. Which was very little. In Bulgaria, life is hard, there are no freebies and you have to work to eat. Why did the Roma parents throw their children away like garbage, and most likely make 5 new ones? This is the question.
Vaska just sat and lay in the miserable building. In her current home, she had been taught to speak, which is difficult at her age. He spoke clearly, I understood what he said.
I wish I could have ALL the children..😢😢😢
In such an environment you can only get sick terribly
My heart is breaking as I watch this. These are poor little children that were being tortured. 😢
This is so heartbreaking! 😢💔
No doubt this is heart breaking watching this
This is heartbreaking, dehumanizing, absolutely horrific. 💔
Love and kindness can make amazing changes. I still can’t believe what these poor babies went through. I wish I could give them all a big hug and let them know they are loved ❤ I also hope the abusers get what they deserve. That is pure evil. Kate, thank you so much and your amazing crew for going above and beyond. God bless you all❤️🙏🏽
Absolutely so heartbreaking locked away, absolutely no love or care from the caregivers absolutely sick
How can anyone treat these babies that way. So glad see some got out.
Knowing that most of the children have been rescued eases my heart. It is a tragedy that they were even there. Left by people whose only purpose was to love their children, and they couldn't even do that.
It really did lighten my soul knowing they are getting everything they deserve and more. As a person on this planet, I've come to the conclusion that people are sad excuses for decent. So those of us who can help make a difference should. If we don't, our hearts will forever be broken. I can't live with a broken heart.
My heart breaks every time I see a documentary like this. The treatment of disabled and orphaned (etc) children in countries like Bulgaria and Romania was appalling. Studying about the effects of institutionalization (particularly what was observed from kids as these) is so heartbreaking! I'm glad to see that these handful are doing better, they seem so sweet. Especially, sweet Milen who was so worried that Kate was going to be going back Mogilino. I am glad there are journalists like Kate and her team who despite the emotional toll of reporting on such topics do it.
That woman feeding this child, holy crap, give her a chance to swallow and chew before you shovel the next spoonful in! @ 10:20
I think she was just in a big rush, I guess she probably has to hand feed all the kids so she's rushing through it. I'm surprised he didn't choke though
@@HM-debtfreeNo excuse😮
Feels so unempathethic and dangerous too, the children could choke.
I know. I couldn't believe how fast she was shovelling the food in.
Right, I see that also in nursing homes
Lord why cant i just take all of them away from the pain and suffering and care for them❗ 😭😭😭 🙏🏽 one day just one day ima open up a home for kids like this and others that need help...
These poor children. Can’t do anything for themselves, and no one was doing anything for them. The state of their health is deplorable. I mean it’s honestly so hard to even look at them bc it makes you feel guilty. Guilty for not knowing that there were children living like this, and guilty for being helpless, and not being able to do something after knowing their situation existed. I know this is old, but those feelings still arise within me when I look at them. It’s just a shame that the adults in charge of the children do absolutely nothing to help their condition. The cries of these babies are gut wrenching 😞😞😓
Edit : just got to the part where they are being well taken care of, and it warms my soul to see the smiles on their faces. It’s like the other people thought that just bc they could not communicate, that they weren’t deserving of love and compassion. I’m just so happy that these children now feel like they have a purpose, and are thriving. Thank god for the people who rescued them! 🙏🏼😌❤
i just hope it continued (as this was filmed years ago). i wish there were further updates. i am glad their immediate situations were mostly taken care of pretty quickly back then though, due to this investigative program. i hope the newfound care and concern stuck around.
This is heartbreaking, how can adults treat the most vulnerable children like this? I can't continue to watch it more than few mins. Heartbreaks for them. God please help our children.
These poor babies, it would have been so hard to walk away.
These children are malnourished I watched this years ago it's so heartbreaking

I thought of these children often through the years. I am so glad there has been an update & that these children’s lives have become substantially better. I hope there continues to be change in these institutions. Thank you for your service, support & leadership
Breaks my heart so badly to know children are raised like this due to no fault of their own....while their parents carry on in the world. Not fair and not ok. But so grateful for the update i had worried about these children for years this documentary changed my life.
Horrific and inspiring at the same time...
Wow! What a story. I am unable to put all the things I've got to say into words. Amazing job, amazing attempt at raising awareness. You are the most amazing person! And these children deserved what you'd given them by all means. And the last scene when the baby wanted a hug from you was priceless

This video is so sad. They may not be able to speak or see but there still people damn respect them show love
I feel so bad for the children. Why was Dee-Dee (I hope I have got the name right) institutionalised? She seems pretty alright. Love her inclination towards academics.
Because of having autism probably, someone with autism can be very smart but still have lots of difficulties in other areas. But who knows how her mother treated her as she was abandoned, that must have affected her development and then the months in Mogilino.
Striking a child that can’t speak for him self
I hope that man gets punished one day it is so heartbreaking
God bless the little souls. Thank you for your efforts to expose this ugly reality.
Oh my gosh, this was so heartbreaking... Thank you for bringing attention to this. So good to see the positive end results.
Why are people so cruel to the weak and the injured? Whether or not a child has a right to a better life?
Why do we still exercise the ,(RIGHT.) to hurt these children?? God have mercy on those who hurt and injure these children.
They are humans not throw away children!!!!
I am not a rich person. But I could still give so much love and so much care for a child as one of these.
I watched the original documentary of Mogilino years ago and was angered and disturbed at what I saw. The male staff should never have been in charge with watching over the girls during showers. It was reported that none of the females were virgins. I can only imagine what was happening to those young girls under his care. It was so sad to see most of the children so malnourished and rocking themselves to soothe. The director should have been fired, she was only concerned with the building, bragging about recently buying three umbrellas for the pool and feeling sorry for herself. It broke my heart to see Milen, Misha and Vassy being abused as they were. I was so happy at how much the three as well as Didi thrived when they were taken out of that environment and moved to other facilities where they all thrived. If not for the reporter, Mogilino would most likely still be in operation today. She is a true hero!
The criminal and needless suffering of these beautiful children, really shows that humanity is lacking the love it requires. No child should ever have to live this way. The injustice is horrific.
Obese carers look more well fed than those poor kids 💔
If this children can receive the love they deserve they will be much happy and healthier 😢😢😢

Being short staffed or not having enough funding is no excuse for neglect and abuse. Being kind, caring and respectful doesn't cost a thing. This is older so it would be great to see how they're all doing now.
It helps if there is not only enough staff but staff that are well trained and paid so they have a clue how to do the job.

It's amazing how each of the kids that are in their new home, Right before their caregiver leaves they have to reconfirm that what they were promised will happen. And I find that so sad to think that there's still a thought in their mind or fear that they will be abandoned when their caregiver leaves.
Just awful, though there are parents in the US (seems more lately) that treat their own children like this at home. It's just so sad as these kids live a tortured, miserable existence. It's not even living. So glad this documentary was able to provide some care and love to these kids.
