In europe , its normal eat alone. Alone doesn't mean lonely!!! , its different things. I do solo dining at anywhere, from street food to fine dining. At Asia., Europe, at middle east like Dubai. Eat with group is nice , depending group you have.. surroinding by fake friends is cruel . Better to eat alone , feel more freedom. And peace 😊

I’ve known a lot of people, myself included, who are out solo more during long term monogamous relationships simply because everyone has their own lives to live/different schedules…it’s preposterous to be so discriminatory over something so mundane, yet masquerade as a developed society. Literally, places in Europe, US and western nations don’t even bat an eye towards solo diners. I mean, some customers might feel insecure about solo diners but that’s always gonna be the case regardless. People feel threatened by people who are secure with doing even mundane things alone. Like…is everyone supposed to grocery shop with their beloved?? How many activities “should” we do joined at the hip with a significant other? Provincial lunacy.

I've been to South Korea for a couple of times as a solo traveller. It's hard to find restaurants where a single person can eat solo or where meal serving is good for one person. Japan is a solo travel friendly destination in terms of eating solo.

As a matter of fact, this 'solo-dining' trend is actually out of fashion nowadays in Korea. For some reason these restaurants for individuals have already closed down a LOT.

Because they lacked the brain cells to design their restaurant to accommodate solo dining on purpose (unlike Japanese or western places with bar seating) but they will use that to blame it on “it’s bad for biz that’s why we discriminate” even though other nations that don’t discriminate do just fine

Long working hours in South Korea is very common, so if after near 60 - 80 hrs - or more - of work p/w, I dont think you have the energy to smile and talk. In EU we work about 35 - 40 hrs p/w and we are tired already. My sincere respect for such a hard working country like South Korea. No wonder their economy is so successful👌💪👍. I would like to travel more often to South Korea. It is money well spent

Eating is serious business - both for the body and mind - it is best to eat alone and silently. Or at least silently with only a few people around. Good for digestion and emotional well-being. Excessive human interaction is a waste of time and depletes spiritual power.

SoKo is coming around because it’s modern and shaming such a simple act seems backward and counterintuitive…if you’re gonna be discriminatory towards solo diners, how are you better than NoKo? How long is SoKo gonna have k pop acts preaching/singing/cavorting/thrusting about empowerment while their society embraces a lack of independence? Their Overton window is determined by commerce, we get it. Japan & western nations have restaurant design considering all variety of diners (solo dining usually at fast-turnaround “bar” whether you’re drinking or not; not only is a nice, extended design of a bar aesthetically pleasing but practically functional to a cutting and organizing an open space). It makes them seem out of touch to exclude solo diners atp in time, not everyone’s schedules align to eat out together. Even people in long term monogamous relationships find themselves eating out alone, no need to harshly judge people who aren’t codependent on “society.” “Time and space they require” is & always has been an excuse for their conditioning, SoKo likes to think it’s different from NoKo but the value-based habits and behavior betrays the way they wish to appear to the world.

I walk in a korea restaurant and they kick me out. They serve family and couple meal. No individual dining meal. The grill meat are best suit weekends, not everyday meal. Their meal set choice really basic (bulgologi meat) not much many choices like the Chinese stir fried dishes. Boring eating a dish every day. No stir fried noodles. Ramen 1 type soup noodles, boring if eat everyday. They also have very little rice porridge. Not like the Cantonese or hong kong style porridge or teo chew style porridge with variety dishes. At least this new restaurant is awesome for individual meal. Korean society is a city not really friendly to know new people or get to know new friends many faces loneliness. 3 months, I am there, I didn't meet new Korean friends but work the entire day and weekends alone. Often men is too realistically view female as dating terms or not, not interested in wasting their time for female friends.
