Crab grass may be a weed in flower beds and row crop fields. This year I tried planting it for livestock and discuss the results in this video.

I've got a bunch that popped up where my deep litter pig pen was in mostly shade. My ducklings seemed to enjoy skimming the seeds off of them. No ground cover has grown there for years. I'm glad it has some nutritional value. Maybe I'll give it a mowing a couple times a year and see if it'll thicken up.

I would think that it will thicken up. Ducks and geese will eat the grass as well as the seeds. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Call Dalrymple Farms in Oklahoma they will give all the information you need to grow Crabgrass they developed some of the varieties on the market today.

I planted red river crabgrass from them last year and this year it is coming back in those areas. I plant to plant a lot more of it once the soil has improved some.

@@DowdleFamilyFarms I have about 50 acres planted with Quick & Big variety and plan to plant more in the future we are putting it into small square bales.
You may have been familiar with Dalrymple Farms already but if not they have a lot of good information on their website. I think you will be happy once it is established, when it is growing well it also helps with weed control. Good luck with your growing.

I used Red River, which was the only one I had access to. I think its an older version of the quick n big. It has regrown this summer from seed produced last summer.

I wish red river crabgrass was a perennial

It reseeds itself and grows back much like a perennial.

@@DowdleFamilyFarms yeah it reseeds, came back a lot thinner this year than it did last year. It’s not as reliable as a true perennial

There are no weeds, only forbs. So called weeds grow only were nature wants it to grow.
