John Paul White: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • Bob Boilen | November 14, 2016 - I wasn't alone in patiently waiting for new music from John Paul White. His singing and songwriting as half of The Civil Wars was heartfelt and beautiful. This summer, a new album finally came, and Beulah was a quietly understated gem. This is tender Southern music without drawl or pretense, and I love it. White kicks off his Tiny Desk concert with Beulah's opening track, "Black Leaf." It's a song about loss of love, with this killer line:
"Those old butterflies, they haven't died
'Cause they're eating me alive in there"
After his solo entrance in "Black Leaf," White is joined by Kelli Jones-Savoy on violin and Adam Morrow on guitar for more tunes from Beulah. White recorded these songs originally in Muscle Shoals, Ala., at the well-known FAME Studios, as well as at his own Single Lock Studios. Here at the Tiny Desk, they take on a new life of their own with new arrangements.
    Beulah is available now:
    iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/album/beu...
    Amazon: www.amazon.com/Beulah-John-Pa...
    SET LIST:
    "Black Leaf"
"Hate The Way You Love Me"
    "What's So"
    MUSICIANS:
John Paul White (vocals/guitar); Kelli Jones-Savoy (violin); Adam Morrow (guitar).
    CREDITS:
Producers: Bob Boilen, Niki Walker; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Niki Walker, Nicole Boliaux; Production Assistant: Anna Marketti; Photo: Raquel Zaldivar/NPR.

As much as I adore the Civil Wars and how tight their harmonies were, there definitely came a point where Joy's voice was so much more upfront than John's. It is so satisfying to finally hear John's music and to hear the music that was the foundation of the Civil Wars.

Joy's voice wasn't "more... than" - it was pushing ahead alone while John just kept his silent mouth open. She is Scorpio and for sure was madly jealous to higher talent.

@@robertcarter4726 And he's a Leo. Someone who craves the spotlight and doesn't really like to share it. Scorpio-Leo friendships and partnerships are the most difficult to manage! But they naturally attract, by being total opposites. The most fiery Fire Sign and the most fiery Water Sign = Geysers!! for good or for bad. Their music was so beautiful. Together it was magic and actually magnified their talent. And as separate artists, their personalities show through.

John Paul was the real genius behind The Civil Wars... lyracist, composer, talented enough to engage with simple melodies and a single guitar and THAT AIN'T EASY. Much ignorant hate has been spewed his way... none of us fans knows the real story of TCW breakup... may both Joy and Paul find their separate extacies, and may they keep their story a closely held secret.
