Alec, you want to know what I think? Having been smithing for around 14yrs, I think this is the absolute best explanation of forging tapers I ever viewed. Just enough yak yak to get the point across. I will personally recommend your videos to anyone wanting to learn. I don't posses the ability to convey my thoughts into words as you do. Excellent video little brother
This has to be one of the most informative viedos on the topic I have ever seen.
This is fantastic teaching. Until I watched this, I didn't even know how much I didn't know.
I know the feeling. It was taking me so long to achieve the same result and now i know why. I wasn't using the proper technique.
Thanks to youtube, finally it got a suggestion right. So glad i found your channel! Subscribed. Thanks for not just showing the techniques but also explaining what actually happens.
Hi guys! Looks like the link to where you can get your ebook was broken for the first 8 hours! I apologise sincerely and have fixed it!

Alec Steele I can not find the link to the ebook, could you please direct me to the link. Thank u Sir
Ditto GrandSmith. Your enthusiasm and passion and smile really counts for a lot of the enjoyment. Thank you.
anoche me dormí mirando este video y hoy me levante y aquí estoy mirando de nuevo este video. muchas gracias Alec
You are just a great teach.... no dough to your teachers. Thank you.
You just saved me years of learning these efficient ways. Those closeups are perfect for illustrate how the techniques work. Perfect Alec.
I love to see your videos, is amazing to see somebody with that level of passion and your enthusiasm is contagious. Watch your videos make me want to enter the world of blacksmithing. Greetings from Argentina, you are amazing.
this video was so easy to watch, almost no effort to learn, and without music or crazy effort in editing. i was thinking you have a talent in making educational and entertaining videos, but now i am sure. already having a goal to save money so i can visit you for any seminar you will be doing at the time (hopefully spring), and i can't wait to meet you and exercise some blacksmithing at last. Have a good night Alec.
It's obvious that you're thinking about all this stuff while you work, and hearing you explain it in real time is awesome. It helps that you have a great speaking/teaching voice, very great tutorial!
I feel like you should make more videos like this. It’s very informative for CZcams learners like myself.
This is an awesome demonstration of tapering.
Honest i watch a lot of different UT smiths and
Alex you got me started bu i was noticing you
went more to the sensational side of UT production.
This is my taste of of content.
This was the most instructional video I’ve ever seen. Thanks for putting this out for the world to use.
Still good to watch these 8 years later
I feel like you went to the Jeremy Clarkson School of Narration.
Very nice video.
Wonderful video! I absolutely love watching your skill, and your enthusiasm adds so much to the videos as well!
That is awesome to hear! Thank you for taking the time to let me know :)
I would love another video about these blacksmithing techniques. I have been a blacksmith for about four years, and I have never moved steel as efficiently, confidently and accurately as I have in the last 7 months while following your work! Thank you for teaching me true blacksmithing!
I just started with a blacksmithing class, first project was to forge a hook, starting with a long taper. I had enough time to try several tapers, and having watched this video helped a ton. Thanks Alec!
Mr. Steele, this presentation is just SO clear and easy to understand! Your explanations make perfect sense, and having the video component to help explain things makes it possible for even the most rank beginner to understand what you're doing, and why.
Thank you most sincerely for a wonderful video!
I think you are a great teacher. Clear, articulate and 1uite knowledgeable. I look forward to this class once I'm comfortable with the skills from the beginner course. Please keep up the great work.
I tried to add your name to the Wikipedia list of current names associated with Norwich but failed. Perhaps someone else could. Alec is a great example of finding a passion early and pouring yourself into it. Too many kids shun the trades thinking they're all going to be rockstars or million dollar athletes but never live their dreams and be content in life. Look for what God gave you the talent and passion for then do it.
Alec is a rather infectious chap you just enjoy and get a good feeling from his positive vibes. He's also legit because he's constantly laughing at himself when he makes mistakes. Very humble. Keep up the great work young man and thanks for sharing this YT channel, which, btw, is very well produced and shot.
I agree 100% with every sentence you just typed....except for one.
As a starting blacksmith this is some good information
i read your comment on "Hey Joey" and it brought me here.
thank you.
Fantastic video! Thorough, informative, well shot and well narrated. Your skill and enthusiasm make you a natural educator and a pleasure to watch. Great job!
Thank you for the lesson. Your smithing is Amazing and for you to share it is quite the gift. Again, THANK YOU, you are very informative, energized & helpful. Keep the sparks flying!!! 🍀⚒🍀⚔
You always sound so excited when you're recording these. :)
Interestingly enough, I have only just gotten the hand of that half-on half-off style drawing out, and it's good to have a review. Happy forging!
As someone who knows nothing about blacksmithing you made it very easy to understand
this detail is exactly what I need. thank you...nothing like it on CZcams.
+m wood Thank you very much!
Alec, even though you made this a majillion years ago, I just wanted to say I still find it useful. Thanks for sharing what you know and helping us new folks become better smiths. I love the products at alecsteelco, too!
Hi, Thank you for your videos Alec. I've just set up my own simple forge and anvil at home and are sucking in all the information I can get. You're doing great instructional videos!
I like these videos better than the other ones
verry verry cool i am learning so much from you. this 51 year-old dog is learning new tricks!!!😎 you have a new follower in San Antonio Texas.
I’m pretty sure I’ve gone through and watched all of your videos at this point!
I'm finally grew some balls to start working in blacksmithing style cause I can get very creative and in looking for a good tutorial training and this one shows me the right way and start working on my skills looking forward for more videos from you for trick and styles
Love this video!!!! Helped me so much understand forging concepts and not be afraid to experiment and make mistakes
Alec - great video! I do some demos and this gives me ideas for explaining various processes. Thanks and keep up the good work.
you my friend are an inspiration to Smith's of all ages keep up the awesome work
Great video! I just retired, and bought a Peter Wright anvil last Friday. Gathering materials to make my forge now. This video will help exponentially with my skills. Hope you will make more. I'll check out the e-book also.
I miss videos like this! I'd also love to see a tutorial video of the little eccentricities in forging such as techniques for turning the stock, hammer angles, etc!
Really enjoyed this video. Your enthusiasm and excellent presenter voice a real plus. Information is really condensed. I have to view several times and take notes. But I suppose this is a good thing. Thanks again.
Very clear explanation and video of how to do this. Best explanation I have heard yet.
This video made me start blacksmithing. 🙂
1min 30 secs in- already have to say great job. Concise with a lot of very detailed and important info (such as "psi" and surface area/heat loss etc)
And I love the lack of "uh, um, eh... What was I talking abouts"
(Looking at vids for a friend/beginner smith to look at)
Cheers!
This is really great for the world! Evolving to the old ways in a new way!
Incredible teaching. Well done as usual.
I know this is an older video, but you awesome! watching you helps me learn since I don't have anyone in person. thanks man(mate?) l
This video is gold! Its great for reference.
thanks mate just luv your presentation all ways good to refresh the basic's i just think its great the people share their knowledge good on you for taking the time
Hey Alec I know this is an old video but Iv'e only just found it. Great stuuf mate sounds like your having so much fun. I signed up for the free ebook but nothing has come through. Is that offer still available? Cheers Andy
Great video and e-book. Thanks for the wonderful information on your channel. Do any of your classes show the tools and techniques for the decorations you put on the hammers featured on your website?
I've been looking for a great channel to learn, looks as if I've found one. Great video! I'm taking up an apprenticeship here in Poland soon.
Cheers!
+RoughHands Co. Thank you sir!
Fantastic guide and fantastic video in and of itself.
Thank you for the vid. very simple and informative.
great video, short and simple. thanks
Thank you sir , your explanations of the tapering of steel is one of the most helpful that I have seen , im just getting into blacksmithing and its nice to know that there are experts like you , Brian brazeal, Jason knight out there that are willing to help and share your expert knowledge...
wonderful video, gives me a few ideas to practice on. had a question if you don't mind, I do a lot of daggers, ive been playing with the idea of doing a square bar taper (for rondel type, or other very stiff daggers) but I'm not sure how to go about turning it into a 60 degree angle for the edges without messing up the Ridgelines. If it was you, how might you accomplish lowering the 45' corners to a slighter, more dagger-appropriate angle?
I learnt a lot from this. Thank you :)
You are a good chap. I call off the revolutionary war.
+Tony Walker Thanks Tony ;)
Excellent instruction video.
Really enjoyed it!
Cheers
Awesome instruction Alec!!!! Thanks
Wow you make a very nice finish.
Nice controlled hammer technique.Very straight tapers.
The most straightforward and best explanation I've seen. Thanks for such a good video.
OT. Normalizing removes or mostly removes the effects of stresses and strengthening due to previous hammering passes, right? Is there a scenario where you'd want to retain those stresses and all that come with them all the way to quenching?
Great video, thank you!
Awesome vid. Needed it today
Hello thanks for video, how about weld forging hight carbon steel with titanium and nikle to jointed well
For lack of storage..what are your ideas on a portable blacksmith shop..example I would need to move equipment out of garage build something shut down then move equipment back into garage for storage
I like this style Of video. Keep them coming.
Great video! You should look into voicing audio books. Ive had your video in the background while doing chores and way of speaking is very relaxing. Thanks for sharing!
did not get my ebook as it said I would but it's OK i still love your videos
Hi Alec, great intro and well explained.
Just subscribed and registered for the ebook.
Thanks for your video's.
Shayne......
Even when I get my metal to a hot bright orange color the temp seems to cool down in a matter of seconds is there something that I’m doing wrong?
Hi Alec, first Thank you so much for such a great video. I need a ton of help with efficiency and increasing the amount of steel moved. So I do have a question....may I share the link to this video in our group, "Modern Blacksmithing" its a group that encourages the use of modern welding as well as preserving traditional forging. I'm also an admin on BFB and IB. You might have seen me in the pages setting up charity funds for smiths in crisis. Well I am very impressed and off to practice. Thanks so much for your teaching.
+Charles Wright PLEASE PLEASE DO SHARE AWAY CHARLES!!! Thank you for the comment!
AS always, Thank you. Your skill and enthusiasm are incredible....A network needs to contract you for a show, you would have an audience glued to your show no doubt. Thanks so much.
your hammer work is beautiful
Dude you have been and will always be my favorite blacksmith to watch so no disrespect here when I say in this video you sound like Stewie Griffin. The main reason I'm so far back on your videos right now is because for Christmas my wife got me into a beginner blacksmith class so I want to go into it with some what of an idea of what I'm going to be taught cause I don't like going into anything half caulked and you are the reason I love blacksmithing before you it was just a curiosity now I want to make it my job and it's all thanks to you so thank you Alec. P.s. how you liking Montana? I've lived in Minnesota my whole life and I love it here
Very useful. I will pass this info on to my subs.
amazing work man. subscribed.
Thanks for making these videos, they are very clear,to the point and well done. I followed the link to the ebook and input my email, but i haven't received the email. Is that still available? It would help as i don't get internet/service in my shop. Thanks again!
excellent explanations. Thanks!
AWESOME ! Thank you!
great video, very informative
Is there more to this playlist that I'm not seeing on your page?
Do you always stand perpendicular with the anvil when tapering, or just for the video?
Very informative! Can't wait to start blacksmithing, unfortunately my anvil is just a 15 lb sledge hammer head (not the best anvil, but I can't get my hands on a real one yet). Thank you for the video!
+Sharp Works Thanks sharp! :)
Sharp Works rail road tracks work great
Mine's a piece of I beam for construction.
Mines a blacksmithed anvil I made from roughly 5 prices of dark road steel on a price of large rock.
Hope you're still on YT. What happens to the extra metal when shaping to smaller size. I have to reduce a piece 2.5 x 1 inch down to 1.75 x 1 in. By doing this does the 2ft piece become longer? Yes this is a newbie question since I have not built my forge. Thanks
Richard Britt it sure does
Excellant video showing effective techniques. However, the volume is very low compared to your other videos.
Genius!!! thanks a lot for the video!!!
Do you find yourself using a particular steel more than others simply because you enjoy working it? Asking the same as the first except what's your least favorite steel based purely on hating working with it? Thanks in advance.
thanks for having a big heart, most people would sell such things like that. you got it on books?
Hi Alex got the ebook. Quick question what would be your top ten beginner projects to start on? obviously not a viking sword etc but basic projects that enforce all the basic principles (principals??) of blacksmithing? I want to learn as i have a six year old boy i want to teach this sort of thing to and its a good father and son time thing cheers and thanks for the videos
hi Alex great video but these technique s take time to master . but thats the fun in forging . cheers .
Me who just start forging: "That taper method doesn't look too hard."
*Tries it* "I'm fully convinced Alec is a wizard..."
*Tries another 100 times over the course of weeks*
"I'm fully convinced I just sucked, but I'm getting better."
*After 3 months and now teaching my dad how to do a taper*
"It's not too difficult, just do this."
Fairly certain my dad thinks I am a wizard.
Great technique btw
Great video
I learned so much
fantastico Alec , riesci a sagomate qualsiasi pezzo di ferro! Ti abbraccio Buona serata!
