  • After years of obscurity in the mid-size muscle car market, Ford finally got serious and introduced the 2-door 1968 Torino GT. When equipped with the 390 cubic-inch V8 or the Cobra Jet 428 cubic-inch V8, the Torino was now a serious threat to its competition. The 1968 Torino GT allowed Ford to be a sales leader in the mid-size muscle car segment.

Blame the EPA. For every powertrain combination (including manual transmission) it needs to be tested. Not cheap and it also takes time. Add in parts and devopment cost of offering more options with the complexity of modern engines, and sadly, options are a thing of the past.

My late brother, a Ford mechanic, had two of the fastbacks with the 390 plus his own engine performance mods. He was fond of saying it would pass everything on the road but the gas station. The first model was stolen the day after leaving the body shop (Hmmmm) and was recovered 5 years later after winning its bracket at a local drag strip. Thanks for the memories. Narragansett Bay.

I wish I still had my '68 Torino GT fastback. 390 cid, 4 speed. Maroon with gold stripes, and a white interior. I had too much fun with it, and the judge sent a letter to the state suggesting, they never let me register it again....LOL. He also gave me the option of military service, or the crossbar hotel. I sold the car, and joined the Army.

In '74, when I was 20, I traded my handmedown '66 Valiant on a '69 Torino GT. Think I paid $1000 for it. It had a 390 and a Holly 750 4bbl. I took it to Midas and had it converted from a single exhaust to dual Cherry Bomb glass packs To this day, it still one of my favorite cars I've ever owned.

I didn’t think I would be so moved by the car when I looked at the pictures but when I saw it in person, I was just floored how amazing it is, I was lucky enough to find a car with almost no rust, dents and original paint that survived half a century of life. I am going to bring her back to original glory as any classic survivor should be. The weirdest thing, though it was supposed to have bucket seats and a four shift but my car came from the factory with column shift and front bench possibly because of the UAW strikes.

The '68 Fairlane/Torino was my favorite Ford of the late '60s, and the formal coupe was my favorite body, with styling that was clean and sleek. I've test driven several over the years, and even with the 302, they were really peppy. Also, the interior trim, with a generously padded dash, and even padded roof pillars, was quite luxurious, not to mention safer. Luxuries that were mostly replaced with nasty, hard plastic during the cost-cutting '70s. I believe American family-cars should've stayed about this size and weight, instead of becoming the wretched, bloated, excesses we got a few years later!

Ford issue during this time frame of the Torino's was rear gear all wrong and of course tires. If a 1968 Torino with a 428 and C6 auto trans had a rear gear of something like 3.73 it would have been a shear beast.
But the 390 and 351W were quite strong.

I bought a used 1968 Torino GT with the 320hp 390 4V and the wide-ratio Toploader 4-speed. One of the best-handling cars ever to come out of Detroit to that time. Still one of my two favorite cars of all time. The other? My wife's 1963 Fairlane 500 Sports Coupe, original engine/transmission was a 2V 260 with two-speed Ford-O-Matic. I replaced that drivetrain with a 351W 4V and C-4 automatic. With a set of premium Pirelli tires, that little Fairlane rode better and handled as well as my buddy's stock 1965 Shelby GT350! And that was just about the time all Mustangs started a price rebound, so I came out ahead in that department, too!

Also had the T&C top loader 4-speed transmission, sometimes called the Rock Crusher crusher because it was virtually indestructible and had the reputation among drag racers of being able to handle much more shock than the heavy-duty Muncie M-22 Rock Crusher. Smoothest-shifting transmission available in its day, untill the linkage wore out...

He could run about a 15.0 quarter on street tires. I loved riding in that car (I had a jade green 1976 El Camino that no one wanted to ride in) and seeing some of these pics brought back a lot of memories, including the smell of the vinyl. It had no AC and summer in Texas is hot but it was a great car for a teenager to ride around in.

It got so bad, I had to stop racing them because I knew I could beat them, I got bored. My 50 extra inches and about 50 extra hp., stock to stock, it was no problem beating them. I still think they are one of the most beautiful muscle cars produced by anyone.

I bought one new in 68. Had the 390, 4 speed, 335 hp, 3:32 gears, Hyland Green with gold strip. Added hooker headers, wheelie bars, 4:56 gears, dual point dist, Goodyear Cheaters and ran 13.02 and 13.08 best times in F/S. I still have the car. Got married in 1970, installed a different third member from a Thunderbird at 2:73 . Drove to Florida on honeymoon 70 MPH was only 1800 RPM. Got almost 30 miles per gallon! Later on rebuilt engine with a RV cam. Terrible for power, but good for mileage. Painted car a second time in red. Had to paint on the strip in gold because I could not find the tape strip kit. That was back in 1982. Rebuilt the engine again in 1995. Built it with a 427 solid lifer cam and Demon carb. Runs better than it ever did. The cam is great mid range with the 3:50 gears I have now. Stored car in pole barn 3 years. Big mistake as mice destroyed the interior. Insurance paid for that rodent damage. Found seat stuffing in both mufflers. Insurance paid for that. Found seat stuffing inside bell housing which damaged clutch and throw out bearing. Insurance paid for that too. Car is not restored but I still say "respectable". I lost my sales receipt and drag strip time tickets that were in the glove box when the mice made a home in the car. It's still a ONE OWNER and I am glad I still have it.
