      I think that modern production technology allow the voices and instruments to really shine. I am not talking about autotune, pitch correction, digital fx and the like, but quality of microphones, recording, e.q. etc. I think the whole album is exquisitely produced. I know that digital remastering of old tracks is now incredibly capable but this is a step up.

    This WOman is in her early 70's and without Auto tune she nails the song. Raw and emotional, this is what Bjorn was speaking of when he said the album was full of their Life experiences. While sounding like a musical and not a Pop album at times, the lyrics are extremely mature. They have come so much further than Dancing Queen.

    From the minute that melancholic piano kicks in, you know this is going to be one of those heartbreaking, vulnerable masterpiece Agnetha lead vocals, No hearts and flowers, but a painfully real, honest reflection on the flaws and imperfections in relationships. This has a lush but relatively stripped back production that really suits the grittier lyrics of the song, letting the vocals shine. Agnetha's voice is so expressive and emotional ....at times, it is like listening to a heart breaking. Like a movie in song form. And when Frida's vocals come in later...well, that just finished me. How on earth can they still sound this good all these years later? Well, simply put, they are ABBA and were never gonna be anything else, but I am so glad they have created new classics like this one.

    So beautiful, so sad, so Agnetha.... at her best again.... tears
    Vintage Agnetha and this is a very relatable love song. No pink clouds, no languish, no eternal unsatisfied longing, but a deep reflection on a relationship, the struggle through it, the own part in it, the questioning and the realization, that despite all calamities, there is still - love.
    Now "The winner takes it all" has a congenial partner in 'crime', another deeply intimate and emotional performance by Agnetha.

      I'll have to listen to it more, but I'm not sure I agree with your interpretation that this song is about deep, mature love. There are so many elements of the story that are sinister, and I can see why others have linked it to themes of domestic violence, alcoholism, or simply a mutually toxic relationship. I don't think it's quite as simple as saying that there's "still love".

    • @AFLOVEable
      @AFLOVEable Před 2 lety +2

      @@slashdisco There's nothing about pure, mature love. When I write about problems in a relationship and having to look at the own part you have in them,the doubt you have about yourself,maybe even a guilty feeling because of your shortcomings. Realization can also come out of despair not only from maturity. And under all this rubbish, there still could be love. It doesn't necessarily mean it will be fulfilled or distancing wouldn't be in order.

    I think it is a song about alcoholism. "Is she drunk" / "how low I've sunk" / "sorry for the wasted years" / "I feel sick" / my hands are shaking" / "I've hit rock bottom". The husband cried about this situation and the hopelessness. But she comes in sober for the first time in a long time and he can't believe it. The dog senses that the situation is different now and that although she was never the sober woman the husband once loved she hopes "I can be that woman now". The most touching song and I cried a lot when I heard it.

    Agnetha has recorded some great music between 1982 and 2021 but, just somehow, when she works with ABBA, she somehow makes it even more believable. Get Frida doing vocals on the same track and the magic is a given. Bjorn has actually already stated the lyrics influence. "It’s a country song, in essence. And a little gesture to the queen of country, as far as I’m concerned: Tammy Wynette. The good dog is called Tammy. There’s a lot of stuff going into that song, but it’s basically about someone who has come down from an addiction and finally come down into real life and is sorry about all the wasted years. But there’s hope at the end of the tunnel: I can be that woman now. Only we know what is fact and what is fiction about our life experiences together. It’s a kind of freedom that you get. With 70, you get that freedom". It reflects the union of Tammy who was hooked on prescription drugs and her husband George Jones who was an alcoholic.

    The lyrics about "hitting rock bottom" and "or is she drunk?" suggest to me that the singer has been plagued by a drug/alcohol problem that has driven this couple apart over and over again. She's had a turning point and realised she needs help, and is hoping she can be a better human. If that's right then it's a really interesting change of voice for this to be sung from a woman's perspective. Very touching. This one took me by surprise. Agnetha does a hauntingly beautiful job of what is essentially a song about domestic violence and a crippling relationship. Has grown more and more interesting and beautiful 😍 the more I listen! Understand your goosebumps; feel the same now. Once again, most likely based on true life experience, as in early ABBA days…once again, Agnetha sings about the breakdown of their relationship…using Bjorn’s lyrics..?

    in this song there is much very much indeed very much more than the words of Bjiorn and Agnetha can express. There is so much of what the two of them have experienced. So much feeling and so much suffering. The enormous emotion that overwhelms us listening to this song, happens because who wrote it and who sings it, puts in it all his soul and the memories of the TRUE feelings that have united them in a period of life. This is a huge gift that two people have given to those who listen to them

    This is my favorite of all the songs in the Voyage Album . ABBA should have released it as a single instead of Just a notion.
    I can recall I wiped the corners of my eyes twice or more the first time I listened to it alone. I don't know how Agnetha does it. She knows how to make lemons taste like tangerines. Oh gosh... the way she emotes those lyrics, the way she tells a story that tickles your tear ducts and bleeds the bad blood out of our hearts with her healing voice .
    Given Toe, you always have a way to make me keep on watching your reactions. I like how you can connect emotionally with a song without losing sight of the individual part that makes up the song. I hope you remain as intelligently naive and fresh as you have been.

    A heartwarming song, brings back memories of a lullaby! Agnetha`s voice is still unsurpassed, even with shockingly blunt lyrics. However, a woman having gone through such domestic violence, would not sing as affectionately as Agnetha does.

  • @dashoverton1963
    @dashoverton1963 Před 2 lety +6

    It’s funny how some people think this song is about domestic violence, when it’s really not. It’s simply a song about a failed relationship between a frustrated man and a broken-hearted woman, and the acknowledgement that this breakdown was the result of both parties. There’s no blaming the other, and although the man exhibits anger and swears, he shouldn’t be vilified because of this failure. It’s a very mature, sophisticated song by ABBA. They’ve grown up.
