  • ➡️ Google reCAPTCHA is probably the most popular anti spam service in the world. But there are several strong arguments for considering a move away from reCAPTCHA over to an alternative anti spam solution. Here are the facts that made me leave reCAPTCHA (and three spam protection alternatives for WordPress).

    It’s easy to see why Google reCAPTCHA is a popular anti spam service: It’s free, most WordPress plugins and themes offer simple integration and Google is a fairly trusted developer. I myself have been an advocate in several Google reCAPTCHA v3 tutorials.
    But external factors like increased integrity awareness, GDPR and the importance of page speed makes many web developers question if reCAPTCHA is a good choice - or even a feasible choice. Here are three reasons why I have abandoned Google reCAPTCHA and why you maybe should consider moving to another anti spam service.

    My experience of rC v3 is 90% of the time I still get a bunch of "click on all the boxes with X" which IMHO is culture insensitive... "crosswalk?" I don't have those but thankfully I know they mean "pedestrian crossing"... "fire hydrant?" same deal... Also a lot of the pictures are so grainy it is hard to process... It flat out fails in one browser I use thus blocking my access totally.... I have been known to abort purchases on sites because part way through suddenly rC pops up... I applaud anyone that removes rC from anything...

      Hi Jeff! CleanTalk works with a long list of platforms and supports custom integrations. It's not free but you can find some discounts here: divimundo.com/en/cleantalk-spam-protection-discounts/
      A free option is Cloudflare Turnstile. I haven't tried it out myself yet but it looks promising; www.cloudflare.com/products/turnstile/

    I came across this video because of the title. It was a good insight of captcha's world. I thought, maybe you mention also hCaptcha, but no. Do you know hCaptcha? Maybe make a video of that antispam-tool? I find it hard to install

      I swapped to hCaptcha and my spam rocketed so, not a good alternative, it seems. Obviously crackers can hack it.

    Thanks for the good info. I am guessing removal is easy? Also..is that new plugin mandatory...complianz? I am in the US.

    • @DiviMundo
      @DiviMundo  Před 4 měsíci

      Google reCaptcha is not added by WordPress by default, but some themes and plugins (for example contact form plugins and security plugins) might add it when you install them. So the process of removing it is a bit different, depending on the source.
      Complianz is a cookie consent plugin. If you have visitors from the EU, you need to have some kind of solution that tells the visitors about how you use cookies and gives them the option to opt out (there are similar laws in other countries too). I use this plugin: www.cookieyes.com/welcome/?ref=victorduse

    Hello There,
    I'm struggling with the spam I'm getting through my Divi contact forms on a couple of my sites. I've set up the basic recaptcha but people are getting around that.
    They are actually in and 'choosing a service' and I am guessing filling out the calculations from the basic. They are sending full-blown messages. So, I was tryng to add V3 and I tried V2 and neither seem to be working on my Divi sites.
    The honey one you mentioned first, that is free... do you think it's good enough? Will it at least do better than the basic (addition) question?
    Thank you... trying not to pull out all my hair.
    Jen

      Hi Jen! The free version of WP Armour (honeypot) will rescue at least 95% of your hair. 🙂 Try it out for a few weeks and evaluate. If you want two-step protection (more or less 100% bullet proof), you can try the pro version.

    You mention V3 is easy integration. It seems that V3 is not so easy to implement as V2. To perform well you need to define "actions" that humans should do on your site. And then you need to evaluate on your own the form submission as the score is returned by V3. Simply installing V3 does not seem to stop ANY spam in fact. They should not have called it Recaptcha as it is a completely separate universe.

    • @DiviMundo
      @DiviMundo  Před rokem

      I've seen pretty remarkable drops in spam on a dozen sites after activating V3 and setting a score of 0.7-0.8, but I guess every site is different.

    • @thierry.lavallee
      @thierry.lavallee Před rokem

      @@DiviMundo but then you need to define user ACTIONS for your website etc. And then set the acceptance on your forms. Will you do a video on that? Thanks. :)

      @@thierry.lavallee I've abandoned Google reCAPTCHA (for the reasons stated in the video) so I'll probably not do any new tutorials about it before they fix these issues. But I've heard lots of good things about Cloudflare Turnstile as an alternative to CAPTCHA. Have you tried it? From my understanding, it's completely free.

    Your browser will normally cache all that stuff so you need to 1) test that on the second request to a site and 2) do it yourself with the chrome debugger tools. That site you mentioned is likely only measuring uncached performance.
