A hands on review of the fantastic and now discontinued Casio MDV-102 and Casio MTD-1054 quartz diver's watch.
I've also done a review of it siblings, the MTD-1048 and MTD-1049 - • Four Casio Diver Super...
Casio truly needs to bring this watch back. There's a huge market for this one
Ah man, I agree, that would be awesome! There is the new Pepsi MDV106 - not a million miles off and still being updated. This one won't make a return but holy moly if it did I'd be straight on it!
I have just received MDV102, the marlin one as a present from my grandfather. He kept it in the original box for may be 10 years. Im in Bulgaria, Europe. I love this little watch already
Wow, that's a great gift! I hope you enjoy it :-)
I cannot believe how this Casio MDV-102 have appreciated in price and demand. I have owned one for over 10 years and have used it as a everyday work watch, it could sure take a beating. Since then I have replaced the crystal which was scratched pretty bad, polished the case and the band has been holding up good with a little TLC. I love this Casio.
Hi there. I bought this watch in Europe - Belgium - in 2005.
It has the Marlin symbol on the dial and blue led light diodes.
It came with a stainless steel bracelet as original. The bezel is blue in colour and turning well.
I have used this watch always.
Under all conditions. Still in very good condition, completely original, except for the battery of course, which I have changed several times.
My kids used it as a diving object in the pools, when we were on vacation 😊
I got surprised, when I found out, some days ago, that it is actually becoming a bit of collector item.
The watch as extremely durable, as I have used it in my work as marine engineer. It definitely had taken some hits and knocks.
Still running very precise. So satisfied to have this watch in my collection 😀
My dad gave this to me when i 13, used it for 2 years and it's been in the draw ever since. I never knew it was worth a bit lol
If it's not too scratched it is worth quite a bit now!
Casio please bring it back!!!!!
*Forget the Duro, I want this puppy!*
Good watch, I have one.
I have the European Casio 3304 mtd 1054 watch. I bought it 12 years ago as a cheap (£30) weighty watch to wear to see if I'd such a chunky watch before i bought a more expensive watch, such as an Omega. As it happened, I found it far too heavy for my needs (running) so it has been left beside my bed for all these years. The battery has just stopped and I'm searching online for a new battery. I'm really surprised to find out that it's quite sought after. One on Ebay selling for £135! Madness.
Sounds similar to me - I bought my mtd-1054 about 12 years ago for £25. However, I loved it and wore it all the time and now have loads more watches that are big and cumbersome and impractical 😂
It's a shame this got discontinued, such a beautiful watch.
It really is a shame. Its domed crystal was a weak point and scratched very easily, so if it was still available I'd buy 3 or 4!
MTD-1079D-1AVEF may be worthy of comparison. Seemingly a hybrid of the two here
Yes! I'll see if I can get hold of one, looks pretty cool. Thanks :-)
Nice video, i bought the U.S. version many years ago, a bit scratched as well. Use your right thumbnail to turn the bezel. Cheers
Thanks for the tip!
Jam tangan keren 👍ingin memilikinya 😁
Had one of these as a beater work watch quite a while back , I got Into an accident and it was pulled off my wrist I didn't realize until about an hour later then found out it was discontinued ☹ why don't casio bring it back I'd love another one
Damn 😢 It would be great to see these come back. Maybe one day🤞
I am surprised to learn that the crystals of such watches can get scratched. I have two less expensive watches from an inferior brand called Naviforce, and they have held up pretty well without a scratch on their crystals. However, there are scratches on the back of the bands for a gold-plated one, with wear near the case where the watch bands join. So how is it possible that a scratch-proof crystal like those from Casio can get scratched or have scratches?
Unfortunately they're not scratch proof. It's mineral crystal and highly domed so it protudes a lot which isn't a good combination 😞 However, unscratched it's a very handsome combination!
Thank you, other than the Casio Duro MDV-106 (just like) did Casio make another dive watch with the same LED lighting?
... Found the answer.
Hi :-) There are plenty of other Casio watches that have the 'super illuminator' feature. Ones that are dive watches that I know of are the Casio MTD-1079 and the Casio MTD-1080 - there may well be more.
@@WatchesKnivesEDC that's right, thank you!
Well you've spurred me to get mine up and running again :D. Do you know if the battery can be replaced DIY or is it a 'shop-job"? I wonder if the watch is internally pressurised to help with the waterproofing, so to speak, which would mean sending it back to Casio. I also can't seem to find the replacement battery reference No. even on the Casio UK site. Enjoy your watches. I do appreciate precision engineering too!
I've just opened up the back of mine - it takes a cr2016 battery. Easy to replace if you have a case-back opening tool, no weird clips or anything.
And if you screw it back on tight afterwards waterproofing *should* be fine, but if you're going deep with it best get it pressure tested by a local watchmaker, just in case.
@@WatchesKnivesEDC Ah cheers for that. That's really helpful. All the best J
Can I polish the crystal with stages of polish\compound.
Unfortunately not as it's Hardlex (glass).
I love it too except the crappy plastic strap on my mtd1054. I have changed the battery one time myself and it works pretty well 😀🤗
Yeah, the strap is not my favourite. I wear mine on a (bright orange) Nato strap which is perfect for in the water, and much more comfortable.
I replaced mine with a generic rubber/resin strap. Looks just as good and feels a lot more comfortable.
NICE VIDEO ....
Just got my MDV-102 out of my watch case to wear to a wedding, LOL. Needed battery so proceeded to take back off. bummer that I didn't remind my brain that it is a screw off. Scratched back plate a little. Haven't worn a watch in like 5 years as constantly have smart phone.I think I have had mine for about 10 years. Classic styling. Reminds me of James bond early watches,The Rolex Submariner . But my bezel doesn't turn, from day one when I bought it.When I saw this video I tried to move it , both thumbnails as hard as i could. Could there be another version.? Anyway next watch battery is needed for my Raymond Weil Geneve Tango. Which I might sell
I've had a few of these over the years and all the bezels did turn, but some were very, very stiff. It wouldn't take much, a bit of sand for example, to block it. To be honest, you're not missing much, even the ones that turn smoothly are awkward to manipulate!
I have the MVD 102. I bought it many years ago in a Walmart I think? It's a little scratched and the light button doesn't work right but I still like it.
Same. My original is very scratched and the light button doesn't work either... but I bought another newer one that does work 'cos I like these watches, especially the light feature 😉
@@WatchesKnivesEDC Yeah, the light is what drew me to it too. Recently thought about buying a new one and that is when I discovered they're selling for crazy high money now.
They were crazy prices but the prices have calmed down a bit now. $100ish gets you a pristine one - still not cheap, but worth it I think.
@@WatchesKnivesEDC I looked and could only find used ones selling for $200 and up.
@@FabiusMaximus1000 Hmm, you're right. It does fluctuate though so save an eBay search and keep watching. Include the MTD1054 too - seems to go for less.
Subscribed! I wish I could get my hands on one of these.
Keep a look out on ebay - they come up for sale. But they're not cheap any more!
Absolutely fabulous video! Have you ever changed the battery in this watch? If you have, would you please give me some advice on how to do this. Thanks bunches!
Thanks Alaina 👍
I have. If I remember rightly it was actually really easy - get a CR2106 battery, a watch back opener, and once open it's just a case of popping the old one out and putting the new one in. Good luck!
@@WatchesKnivesEDC Thank you so much for the quick reply. Now I just have to find a watch back opener.
@@princessalaina4589 They're dead handy to have plus cheaper to buy than getting a watch shop to change the battery for you, so well worth the (small) investment.
Does this have 2 batteries?
the best watch i ever had,
Yup, I feel the same.
Nice watches.. what is the difference between the 2, beside the marlin pic ?
Nothing, aside from the marlin on the dial and caseback, and a different model number.
Wow they look great. Where did you buy these 2 watch :D
Thanks :-) My old one I bought from a store in the UK a long time ago. The nicer one online from Japan.
Hi. You wouldn't know the size of the hour glass. My friend just gave me one.
Sorry I don't - I sadly don't actually have this watch any more.
👍👍👍❤
USA version ?
Yeah. Lots of brands tend to have different models of the same watch for different markets. The MTD-1054 was what we got over here in Europe, the MDV-102 was what the USA got - the difference was the name (obviously!) and the cool Marlin logo.
@@WatchesKnivesEDC Interesting. I own the mdv 100/101/102 and all 4 106's. Hunting for the 103/4/5 but can't dig one out. Thank you so much for the info.
Wow, that's some collection! Good luck with the elusive ones🤞
Hi sir, do you want to sell?
Sorry, I sold this a little while back. I wish I hadn't though!
What's up bro
Not much. You?
@@WatchesKnivesEDC browsing ebay looking for this watch. It just started snowing outside. What did you do this weekend
@@friendlyjunco6836 Ah, there's a few on there at the moment - some nice ones but quite pricey 😥 They are great watches though.
This weekend was spent mainly looking at watches on the internet. And knives.
@@WatchesKnivesEDC I am bidding on one I hope it doesn't get too high. Have a great week, my friend.
