Truck Hitch Crane Build Ep. 2

- I'll machine the two flange plates that I have designed as part of the crane for this next episode. We'll use the saw to cut a thin drop of 4140 into three pieces and machine two of them to finish. While performing the drilling ops, I'll talk about my thoughts on why I like to share these builds in long run videos which normally makes up several videos or episodes.

The long format videos are kinda like hanging out with a friend. Also, everyone who works in the trades knows that whatever your trade is, it will always trickle over into unnecessary but worthy amounts of work into at home projects. It's a matter of pride in your trade.

As it turns out, the average cost to learn this stuff to the level that it is taught on this channel is upwards to 50k and it's free right here on the A-Bom CZcams channel. You make them long videos, my dude.
You won't ever learn the trade to this level unless you are 3rd generation and then spent 20 years in a major machine shop. I'm sure that Abomb was standing next to his dad and grandpa since he could walk. Spend 50+ thousand at a vocational school and you won't know half what he does. Never stand still, always keep evolving.
You are correct I'm a machinist in the trade now about 15 years and I can honestly remember my schooling and it was not nearly this well explained, you would make a great teacher in a vocational school.
50K? I’d like to know where that figure came from. My tuition for tech school is about 9K after calculating everything out.

Heck, I got paid for my schooling but the fact of the matter is, 90% of what you learn is from experience rather than school and most places have retired or out of work journeymen at best. This guy got his 10,000hrs about 100,000hrs ago. I did say "at the level he is teaching" my 3 month school (we are talking 8hrs of class and practical excercises per day, 5days per week) skips a hell of a lot that he covers in fine detail. This guy ain't half bad. (Also there's a lot of expensive schools out there that are "more sought after")
@@andrewspohrer7183 I do agree that most of the things that you learn in this trade are from experience. Not sure if it’s different at other trade schools, but in mine all the instructors are ex tradesmen. I.E. they were in the industry for several years before coming teachers. I personally went to school because a lot of the tool maker jobs in my area require you to go to school before they would hire you on as an apprentice.
I vote for long videos. Short videos don't tell me much and quickly leave me bored looking for something else to watch. Keep it up you are doing great!
Long time viewer here, please don't make your videos shorter, I enjoy every second of them. For those who want it faster can use the playback speed function of youtube.
I like the longer more in depth videos. It’s like watching a regular show and learning. People don’t have attention spans anymore ya can’t help that. Bless their hearts.

Adam your long form videos are the bom. I love that you take the time to show and explain what you are doing in great detail. I started hobby machining when I retired 3 years ago with no prior experience. It is through watching your videos (and other machinist) that I have advanced to the point that I can actually make some projects around the garage. I appreciate that you want to share your skills and knowledge! I worked in a machine shop when I was 19 and miss the smells and sounds of grinding, cutting and manufacturing.
Two things never cease to amaze me: 1) The amount of knowledge that can be gained on CZcams watching creators like ABom mess around in the shop. 2) That some people will 'discover' an established, successful content creator and decide that the creator is doing it wrong and needs to change in some way to meet their expectations.
I consider myself a maker, but I will never have a metal shop - I love watching these videos.
The "long" content you provide to us is just right. It shows the way you accomplish the various projects you do. All of them are informative, and an excellent learning experience. Don't change a thing about the content you create ! Thank you Adam.
I like the longer format - you cover enough of the details that I usually learn something from each of your videos. There are plenty of other channels that just do short-form snippets of machines making holes in metal with chips flying everywhere for people who just want to zone out and watch machines at work. I guess that's the essence of the difference: those videos are about watching the *machines* work, your videos are about watching *you* work.
Please keep going with the projects in the long format. Anybody can pause a video, fast forward or go to tik tok if they have attention span issues. I have learned and applied many things I have seen you do. I really look forward to your detailed video and explanations.
I love the long format videos, I’ve learned so much because of that specific technique, just repetitive processes. I did successful internal lathe threading, all training from your videos. Keep it up!
Adam, your videos are some of the finest content on CZcams. I have been watching your work for years and can say what you do is second to none. I've watched plenty of machining videos that are abbreviated and they just don't have the same impact. You've certainly earned my respect with the attention to detail and professionalism you show in everything you do. At this point, I'd probably watch and study a video of you eating a bowl of cereal . :) Seriously though, a long format video is great. You've been a great teacher over the years.

The explanation part is one of the best parts about the channel! There is SO MUCH MORE to machining than making chips, the setup stuff is just as important and often takes thinking outside the box to get the job done. Don't change a thing Adam! lol
Emergency doc here. It's soooooooo refreshing to see proper respect paid to PPE. Full face protection, safety guards on, proper work holding ... I'm so sick of fishing bits of zip disc out of legs or grinding fragments out of eyes or treating idiots that have drilled into their own hands. Full marks, Adam.
Frankly Adam, what you've taught me most from just your general working practices, is discipline. Always checking your parallels are snug; always checking your four-jaw or spacers are free of chips; always tidying up and keeping stuff tidy; and just today, putting your tools back in the register so as not to confuse them. I understand that these are just things you do so as to make life easier and get the most accurate part possible/not mess up, but dang son... You truly are artful and I learn every time I watch. Hi Adam, I wouldn't worry about the people grumbling about the length of the videos. They should be more concerned about lack of knowledge of CZcams. After all, just tap the screen and the video will fast forward. It is your complete explanation that makes it so instructive and interesting. Please keep up the long videos. I appreciate the long videos; they provide detail in depth to the point that even I, a definite non-machinist, can follow along and understand what's going on -- even in enough detail that when a friend has a problem that was covered in your videos I can help (need a retaining clip wrench to remove a circlip by spreading the two holes, e.g.). Sometimes I watch in double speed, and when it's abundantly clear you're doing indication with no discussion I skip over that; both of those are options viewers can use without you having to change a thing. Please keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep enjoying watching you do it and learning what I can.
Please keep your video's in this format!! It is great to have a 30+ mins relaxing video full of amazing information to watch. If people want shorter videos with no real content, they can just find one w. rock music blasting every 20 seconds during their transitions, and the content creator spending half the video explaining what they are going to do in the other half of the video. Your videos are great, please keep it up!
A good machinist is patient, analytical, and thorough - so I love your long video format. Please never change it!

The details and explanations are the real value IMHO; That's where the learning and inspiration comes from! For all the metalworking/machining channels out there, only some of them actually take the time to explain what they're doing and why.
Plus, if you enjoy doing it, then that's what you should do. It's worked out for you so far, right?

First, sorry for my bad English, it's not my native language.
I'm not a regular commenter on your videos, but I've been watching your videos for some time now, (since the video of you getting the slab in front of the shop, maybe 4 years ago) and I really enjoy watching your videos.
I love the parts of you explaining the thoght process and why you chose this or that tool/machine. The lessons I take from you making something that can be bought is the best part. Nevermind the (other) keyboard-warriors telling you to change something. Speaking just for myself when saying your style of presenting machining makes me miss my old job really bad. I used to repair cars for a living, untill everything changed and we suddenly became part-swappers. Always loved to fix and make stuff work.
Just keep on making YOUR style of machining videos, and include the "boring" (I got the pun) parts of the project. It's really nice and calming when there's no manager/foreman/shop-coach yelling "You need to hurry up" or "we need to finish this right NOW".
I'll say it again, keep your projects and videos the way you like them. I think most of your (regular) viewers like this style of videos, it's what made me enjoy your videos in the first place.

Started watching your videos about a year or so after you started your channel, I was trying to get some busted exhaust bolts out of my 74 ford F100, you taught me what I needed to do to get the job dun. I went back and have watch every one of your videos, now I have a 10"x22" lathe and have been able to fabricobble so many things, I am currently building a rock crusher and thanks to your teaching I can do things that I never thought I could do. Thank You Adam!
I love the longer videos, and i didn't find the drilling boring at all.There's something satisfying about watching a task progress when its been done with skill.
I grew up with a dad who would make beautiful precise things in the basement shop - lots of machining etc things he could buy cheaper but they wouldn’t be anywhere near as nice. The making of something was worth doing as near perfect as possible for the joy of the making. I understand “why all this work for a truck crane” perfectly.

Adam I made and earlier comment about you wiping the jaws before putting the part in for chamfering. Showing this sort of thing is the best part about your videos. There must be a thousand "machining" channels on CZcams. I have seen several dozen. Yours is far and away the best precisely because you show the entire cut, including your set up. In this video you comment on your style of video making and we watch the COMPLETE sequence of your bit changes. This is so so important ! This makes you unique. Think about it. This is what the apprentice in the shop sees standing next to their master as they learn the craft. No other channel shows this. DO NOT CHANGE A THING! (Yes, Edge Precision does, but he is a CNC machinist. His is also the only other machining channel I watch.)
Adam there is little question that the format that you've established is appreciated by the number of views and subscriptions you've attracted. Personally I feel the detail of you content is it's strength so don't listen to the naysayers. Your skills and this industry were built on attention to detail and quality of the product, both of which you exemplify.
I really like the longer vids, wife thinks they are boring. I have to correct here, "no dear, this is milling, this is drilling, yes, this right here, that's boring" :D

One of the most important things I’ve learned from Adam is to be thoughtful, methodical, calm, and patient in your processes when making your parts. I don’t think I would have gotten that message out of “quickie” videos. If I don’t have time to watch an hour long video, I just watch half now and finish it later. I’ve subscribed to a lot of CZcams channels that I’ve lost interest in, but I’ve been watching Abom79 for years, and I eagerly look forward to his videos. Thanks, Adam!

I find longer format very enjoyable. It's a good pace for learning. Adam's voice, even temperament and manner of explaining is relaxing and displays his long history of experience in the field. People who think it's "boring" need to remember that boring a hole to a precise diameter is an important and necessary operation that Adam teaches in a lot of videos.
Keep the videos long! Not only is the detail interesting but I like to relax with an ABOM video over dinner and if they were shorter, I'd have to eat quicker.....
Obviously, a lot of people have a lack of patience nowadays, but when I started getting into machining, your long formats and explanations really helped me out. I also always really enjoyed the "Shop Talk" series, because there is so much tooling in machine shops, I had no idea what a lot of it was, that you were getting from viewers. I really wish you'd bring that back and do some more shop talks. I also love the longer formats. The longer the better for me. There's one channel I follow and he puts out 10 minute videos, give or take and he puts them out about every day, but by the time I'm getting into the video, it's over. I wish he'd just compile a weeks worth of work into one long video, like you and Steve Summers do.

I like the longer vids and the great detail. I learn so much from all of you machinist that do the really detailed videos. It's more to it than just mechanical detail, there's work order. Learning how to get things done. I watch movies for entertainment. Thanks for all the great projects.
Totally agree. Adam's videos cover everything. He doesn't need to tell you to wear PPE, he just does! And you just follow a good practice. It's natural in him.
My feeling on that topic is that you happen to be a natural teacher. From your videos years ago, I picked up what you're doing easily, though I'd never watched most such things before, and your commentary on it reminded me of many of the most enjoyable teachers I had in school -- leading me to want to know more.

Adam, our world is filled with people who want instant gratification.... they're used to playing video games.... And if they don't get exactly what they want when they want it they get "bored".
It takes an enormous amount of patience and forethought to be a proper Machinist. Your efforts to clearly explain everything that you're doing, and why you're doing it, are truly appreciated.
If some people are unhappy because either you're talking too much or your video seems too long for them ..... Those kind of people should not be in a machine shop....... PERIOD.

I like the longer videos. I would even prefer keeping them at realtime speed for the long ops where you've been speeding up the footage for the sake of time. There's something relaxing about just watching metal being cut off in realtime.
The long video format combined with your insightful commentary is what makes the videos stand out. You would no doubt be a good teacher.

Hey Adam, I have been subscribed for years to your channel I don’t comment much if ever, I want you to keep going like you are, I understand the need for new subs however the new subs should not dictate on what your content is or is not. My opinion is that is what is wrong with our country. You have helped me greatly through the years I decided this year to enroll in a Machinest course at my local votech. Yes at 48 I am a school kid again 😁. Between you and the two Keith’s, Mr Pete and even Tony I look like a rock star in my class, many thanks for all the help and general advice.
My father was a tool and die maker in the aerospace industry for many years. I know if he were still with us today that he would love your channel. I went the electronics industry direction so I never really learned that much about machinists work. I love your channel as it is almost a master class and I have learned a lot.
