I saw that, so I asked Fuji directly again, and they said yes, they come with the batteries and that the listing is wrong. But I'm just relaying information here, because I don't have the grip.
      Here's the latest I received:
      "Hi Gerald,
Yes, all X-T4 Grips include the 2 batteries."

UPDATE #2: Fuji emailed me today (Feb 28) to apologize and inform me that they have now decided to not ship the grip with batteries. They apologized for the flip-flopping and asked me to update this section.
Sorry to my viewers as well for the confusion! 🙏

@@geraldundone Yeah I started looking on B&H to find out even more info about if the batteries was included. There was others that said that during there first looks and I guess they didn't think that the reason ya'll got batteries with it is cause there the review units. But when companies are usually making money there not just going to include the things that bring that extra cash in there pockets. It would've been nice though.

    @LDLCGO Před 4 lety +44

One thing no reviewer has ever said about Fuji cameras for video, that to me sets them apart as true pro grade tools, is that you can disable in camera noise reduction.
When filming something important, you shouldn't have to wait until post to realize the camera decided that some ghosting here and there or some other nasty artifacts were a good compromise to get the noise into what their threshold of acceptability is supposed to be.
    Fuji gets this right.
Being able to tell the camera to leave all the noise in, crank the bitrate up to capture as faithfully as possible and leave the NR subtle art of tweaking and heavy lifting to that big video card that costs more than the camera in post.

    • @LDLCGO
      @LDLCGO Před 4 lety +6

@Asutari I haven't had any experience with Nikon, but Sony cameras have non-defeatable noise reduction built in.
In my experience, depending on picture profile and iso, spatial and temporal noise reduction are applied before recording, causing artifacts that cannot be dealt with in post such as ghosting or loss of fine texture details. And every camera model (A6500, A7R2, A9, A7III, A7S2, etc...) deals with this differently.
      It's a big headache.
Of course the holy grail is raw recording, because it leaves most processing like noise reduction out of the equation, allowing maximum flexibility to squeeze the most out of a specific sensor for a given shoot.
However, I find that a good, high bitrate, supersampled, flat, 10-bit video stream without sharpening or noise reduction like the Xt3 and Xt4 produce gets you 99.9% of the way there.

Im not sure agree as far as the xt4 is concerned. Just that i could see a lot of people who own a 1700$ camera to have a “budget” editing computer, something that’s def not going to have a “video card that costs more than the camera”. 🤷‍♂️ this isn’t necessarily a camera that someone with a 1,400$ graphics card is using, thats more gonna fall to the c500’s or fx9’s and the like imo. But i super appreciate the info and perspective on ghosting and NR. Super cool to think about for sure

  • @TechReflex
    @TechReflex Před 4 lety +12

First of all Gerald, while I love your content I think you have been very unfair to the flippy screen. You shoot a lot of products too, so you should know this that if you are taking a shot with the camera over your head on a tripod facing downwards, then it's impossible to see the screen if it doesn't flip if you also have to operate tripod for fluid head pan shots. It allows for more angles than a flip up screen like the Sony.
Secondly, I think if you're going to compare it with Sony's and Panasonic, you should also mention their shortcomings of their systems. For example Sony has a crop at 30fps too, and Panasonic doesn't have reliable face detect. I get that you are reviewing this from a point of being a perfect camera, but Fuji and others never claimed it to be the perfect camera, so reviewing other cameras for what they are, vs. reviewing X-T4 with a comparison to a theoretically perfect camera is kind of odd.
Lastly, while people appreciate the duo of you and Casey, I personally don't think that you guys mix well, because the style of content you create is very different. What you do is a very serious and objective analysis of technology, and what is does is a very casual and subjective opinion on cameras, and he's mostly discrediting the work that camera companies are doing because they do not have one or two things that he likes. This is fine for his channel, and I like that type of content too, but even in this video he said that it's master of none with a negative tone (which is fine for his style of content, again).
You guys should also have focused on the excellent lens lineup that Fuji has, I really think that it's the best CZcamsr camera at the moment with all the combination of features it offers, and the non cinematic AF and recording limits are really not big limitations compared to other camera systems which have more serious disadvantages.
Again, I really like your videos, but i think this one has been a bit unfair to the camera.

Hi. I am soooo confused whether the X-T4 or the sony A6600 are better for youtube content. I am considering getting my first camera. I think you may have an answer to my question... as you say Fuji's lenses are better? Have you compared both cameras? I honestly can't decide which to get. Sony has terrible IBIS but seems to look brighter. Fuji has a nice clean look where even the skin looks airbrushed (as per a video review comparison I saw before) but the autofocus is unsteady. I don't want my video content to be hunting. Any recommendations? Sony has a lot more lenses at better prices, Fuji lenses are super expensive. I love photography, but video will be the main use for the cam... mainly to do an educational youtube channel on animals (which move alot)... not sure if you or someone can help me out.

Jessica's Maltese & Bengals Sony lenses are not native to their APS-C sensors but are native to the full frame cameras, Fuji lenses are not that expensive and have a lot to choose from, Sony lenses have a limited selection, And Fujifilm have amazing color science that will save a lot of time in post. the xt4 shoot 10 bit internally meaning you will have very little to no color bending, The colors will blend very smoothly.

I own the Xt3 (super happy about it), and the best fuji lens for video is the 18-55, which is stabilized and has a very smooth autofocus. As far as settings, I can recommend to slow them down to -1. That's it about my experience, and I never had problems with the background when using autofocus. If you're interested in vlogging, definitely the 10-24, stabilized, is the lens to go.
I've been using both the fuji 10-24 and the 18-55 (both stabilized) handheld, with the xt3 (has no ibis) and they work really good!
If you own some nice prime lenses, the xt4 will make your life way easier.
In my opinion, the biggest strength of both xt3 and xt4 is the amazing image quality they deliver for the price.

One thing to add too, is with these small nitpicks with focusing etc, Fuji is renowned for issuing firmware updates very shortly after release that fixes a lot of those issues.
A lot of reviewers slammed the X-T3 for focusing issues, and they were fixed via firmware in the first 6 months of it being on the market.

I was a long time Fuji fan. I used Fuji XT-2, XT-20 with 18-55, 16-55 f/2.8 and some more prime lens. Last year I moved to Sony A6600 with 16-55 f/2.8 setup and I am 80% happy. Sony's autofocus is outstanding. And the camera setup is a very traveled friendly total weight of 997 grams. It doesn't feel bulky. I only miss the dual card and faster card recording. If I take a long shutter photo, it takes time to clear the buffer. Video capture is great. The color needs some little adjustment when I take a video in my room. Now I really love Fuji's color specially JPG output is awesome. But if you travel with Fuji XT-4 and XF 16-55 f/2.8 total weight is 1262 grams, which is similar to a full-frame camera and it feels bulky.
I like to use a hybrid travel-friendly camera. The prime lens does not satisfy that. Sometimes you want to take portrait shots, sometimes landscapes sometimes want to capture videos. By all of this consideration, Sony a6600 and 16-55 f/2.8 is my best go-to setup. I think if someone wants to carry weight over 1000 grams, he should go to full-frame. Sony cameras are more compact in the mirrorless world. Also, Sony's grip is way better than Fuji's. But fuji's photo capture and JPG output are better than Sony.

  • @francobarcelo7897
    @francobarcelo7897 Před 4 lety +9

13:32 Kasey is right. How smooth the AF transition works depends on the lens. I have done a test comparing the 18-55 and the XF 35mm f2. And what's weird is that the old kit lens focuses pretty smoothly in video versus the newer prime lens which is supposed to be using a stepper motor if I'm not mistaken. And changing the AF settings doesn't matter. So go figure. I'm inclined to believe that this is all software considering how old the 18-55 is. I sure hope they work on this and fix it with an update for the newer lenses.
Very informative initial impressions, Gerald. I enjoyed your collab with the perfect-camera-seeker. Looks like his search is far from over. 😄👍

If it's not clear in my previous comment, the AF of the XF 35mm f2 in video is not smooth at all. It's too quick regardless of aperture. Similar to their findings in this video.

I figured this is a sign to upgrade. I've been considering the Panasonic S1R, Fuji X-T4, Sony A7R iii or A7R iv. On paper, the specs for the X-T4 looked like a bit of an equal switch and decent upgrade that I'd be willing to live with but after listening to your review, mannn it really helped me think deeper about what I would actually lose and what my needs are originally. Highlights from Professor Undone:
    1. he doesn't like top dials (waste of space) and vintage looks
    2. better access to quick menu
    3. a deeper, more useful grip (but not the best)
    4. flip-out screen nice (but no three-way tilt, nor flip-up)
    5. "enough" function buttons
    6. in/out ports removable door
    7. no USB-C power delivery and headphones at same time
    8. charge all three batteries (using power grip) at once via USB-C
    9. great new batteries (doubled capacity)
    10. backup recording in video due to 2 slots
    11. hot-swappable SD cards (but not necessary)
    12. dedicated selector switch between photo and video modes
    13. great menus and customization (easy to find things)
    14. no waveform monitoring
    15. regular IBIS plus digital stabilization (IS Boost) is an improvement but not Panny level
    16. autofocus can be jumpy
    ---LOSER!!!--
    17. video eye focus good
    18. excellent rolling shutter performance
    19. great color accuracy and color range
    20. "high quality photos and videos with this camera"
    21. two new film simulations
    22. 15 fps and quieter!

This is over a year late, but just how do you prefer a flip-up screen as a videographer? There's a high chance that you will use the hot shoe on top for a microphone that will block the view of the screen...
And yes, I know you can use something like a Lavalier mic instead, but most "vlogger" kits these days come with a much more affordable dead cat style mic to put in the hot shoe.

After deep contemplation about this review, I feel like it's at least accidentally / or semi-purposely a sham, and here is why...
One of the biggest qualms (if not my only qualm) about this review is "non-cinematic AF" or not smooth AF. Obviously, that's like one of the most important features for a video camera today.
But here is the problem...you guys did all the AF tests with the aperture wide, wide open. Let me guess, it was at the widest aperture possible during the neutrally dark, gloomy and grey looking day with awful lighting and the subjects face is like a flesh color (a completely different tone; definitely not neutral).
So try shooting at like at least 2-3 stops lower on a day that is at least decently exposed (not grey at midday). But here is the ultimate tip: Try to not point the camera into your subjects' face at point-blank distance on the widest aperture and see if that makes a difference lol. I don't mean to sound rude/disrespectful, but cmon. You can do muuuuuch better IMO...for a highly anticipated, anticipated, innovative and next-gen camera that isn't even out yet.
With all that being said, I'm sure the proper lenses or a firmware upgrade will make AF in such conditions, (aperture, lighting, contrast, etc), much smoother. Fujifilm is one of the few companies that still truly listens to its customers. I'm saying all of this and I don't even own a Fujifilm lol.
    Just my 2 cents.

Awesome review. The focus issues should either be about settings or unfinished firmware, it seems weird to me that the xt-4 should behave worse than the x-t3 in transitions. The swapping of the removable door and removal of headphone jack is weird af to me, it is perfect on the x-t3 why change it? Ibis performance in video disappointing, hopefully its a firmware issue that will be fixed. I usually shoot video with gimbal and focus motor, so normally autofokus and ibis don't matter that much to me, but I am still very tempted by this camera. What fuji needs to do now is release a range of high end primes with a focus motor suitable for video, otherwise good af in the body is a bit of a waste for those of us mostly concerned with video.

I am new to your channel, and am impressed with this coherent and informative video. I am also a long-time fan of Camera Conspiracies. However, in my honest opinion, the segment the two of you did together was not great.
IBIS was not developed for the sole purpose of allowing street vloggers to stomp on at full speed while holding the camera with an out-stretched arm and an awkward hand angle. I'm not criticising street vloggers, just saying that from a technical perspective, this is a very extreme use-case. More commonly, videographers use IBIS to compensate for hand shakiness while recording static shots (for example, a stand-up interview), or to stabilise slow and controlled movements, imitating the use of a tripod, pedestal, dolly or crane. You barely touched on those use-cases.
Similarly, focus tracking is not generally used to keep people in focus as they jump in and out of the frame or take sharp steps towards or away from the camera. More commonly, it is used to maintain focus on an object moving at predictable rate (like a car, cyclist or jogger coming towards the camera), or to keep an interviewee in focus as she or he slowly leans towards or away from the camera, or to smoothly transition the focal point from one object to another. You did a short "change focus" test at the end of the segment, but again under extreme circumstances: bad lighting, huge difference between the two focal points, abrupt camera movement. The result is quite bad, but it seems like the relevant settings are simply non-functional in the pre-production model.
Anyway, my point is: Photographers and videographers work *with* their cameras to achieve the best results. I understand the rational of working "against" the camera to find out its limits, but at the end of the day, we came here to find out if the camera can deliver the results we need when working with it, within its limits.

XT4 locks up some time and the only way to get it unstuck is to take out the battery for a reset.
Here is what I found was the problem with my X-T4......the bluetooth. Once I shut down bluetooth, the camera stopped whatever it was doing. It was getting to the point that it would not shut off...the last image in the camera was on the screen and the only way to get it off was to take the battery out.

When I started I bought a Panasonic FZ2500 and a Sony RX100V I love image I get from my Sony but I haven't mastered my Panasonic yet, I think my color issues is human error because I've seen videos where the image is how I like, and I think I like a lot the type of colors Fuji delivers, that's why I was looking after the XT-4 but after watching all of this, I'm wondering if the GH5 with the latest firmware update is now the camera for me.

The way the Fujifilm line-up works for me is like this: If you have an X-T2 then there's enough features to warrant an upgrade. If you have an X-T3, you should wait until the X-T5.
The larger battery is the only thing that would get me to upgrade. But I bought 4 extra batteries for my older model. I don't shoot videos, so the movie stuff does not concern me.
I'm relieved they decided to KEEP the knobs and dials. As I love to shoot manual with vintage glass (and mostly in B/W). So the X-T4 might become my new primary camera in the near future...
and I can see keeping that for many, many years and be perfectly content with it.

I disagree with you about the top mounted dials. For me, the unique retro analogue style control of settings rather than scrolling through sub-menus with a multi function button is THE reason why the Fuji system is so great. It feels like it removes the digital interface and puts me back in direct creative control. I want to take photos, not operate a computer. Long may it continue, and hooray for Fuji being different.
