Thank you. I think the fuel pump is my problem it clicks but is very intermittent. I can use starter fluid to get it going but only runs for about 20-30 minutes. Thanks for your demo.
On a 5500 genset what should the fuel pump pressure be? and should you see any air in the plastic fuel filter?
Mine doesn’t make any noise to prime but once it starts it runs fine.
Can you show how to remove the right side spark plug
After your replacement your pump was pretty loud while priming, so I have a few questions.
1-Before replacement, when your trouble started was the pump that loud when priming (mine is hard to hear),
2-did the prime start as soon as you hit the prime button or did it take several seconds,
3- did you have surging with & without a load , and you already spoke of the random shutdowns.
I have cleaned the carb (not removed just carb cleaner) Complete tune -up, & tried adjusting the idle all to no avail. So I am leaning toward the pump at this point.
I am completely new to RV's , we haven't been out of the yard yet, so this is ALL new to us. Any input is appreciated. BTY this is a 5500 Onan on a 2010 Raptor 300MP that has about 350ish hours on the Generator .
1 - No, my original pump was not that loud. Or, at least I didn't remember it being that loud. I never primed it from the genny, I always hit the prime switch inside the RV.
2 - There is a second or two delay when hitting the prime switch before I hear the clicking. I also notice there seems to be a bit longer delay when hitting the inside priming switch.
3 - I did get surges at times. I assume that was the pump starting to go out and providing an inconsistent fuel flow.
Mine went out with only about 40 - 50 hours on the generator. The generators are the same - both Onan 5500 gas.
I have the exact model as you, I replaced my carburetor last month, ran fine for several hours, now we're on a 3 month trip and its not running, runs for 5-10 minutes and shuts down. I can hear my pump priming but I'm not sure what else it could be. Thinking about replacing the pump
@@hiltonray4461 - Sounds like what mine was doing. Replacing the filter and pump corrected the issue and its been running good all season.
Do You know what model it was? I like to get a fuel pump from Napa and return my $230 one to Cummins.
Should there be 2 holes under the sticker on the fuel pump
Tina, I'm not sure what sticker on the fuel pump you are referring too. There are two mounting holes for the bracket that holds the fuel pump to the generator.
What brand and model number is the pump?
Call Cummins Onan, Give them your serial number and they will tell you the exact number you want to order. They have changed numbers that local RV stores may not know. Saved me a lot of headaches!
