I enjoyed your enthusiasm in finding your roots. I too have African DNA, but I am from the South in the USA. I had heard throughout my life that I had a grandmother that was of mixed race (Scottish, African, and Native American Indian) and I hit on all three which confirmed the family rumors. This woman was my great grandmother, my mother's grandmother and I got more African and Native American than she did which I found strange.... Anyway, I have used Ancestry and 23&me. 23&me will let you know a time frame of when you had a full African ancestor as well as the other results.

Well argued Sara, do not let the haters get us all down. Objective and open minded to the whole subject of “ who are we?” The narrow minded and blinkered want to own the narrative and the agenda, when in reality it belongs to all of humanity. The only thing that matters is the truth. To get to that truth open reasoned debate and research should be the order of the day. I myself have recently found out I have a lot of Nigerian and West African in general as part of my DNA. But the surprising thing was that this part of me and my family in general was introduced after slavery late 19th early 20th centuries. Not all my ancestors were slaves. My DNA map spans the globe a consequence of slavery colonialism and natural migration. We’re all products of the British Empire experience/ experiment. I’ll take the negative and positive of all that in acceptance of the human being I am. Peace and happiness to you and yours. Take care.

That rude commentator should examine himself/herself. As you pointed out, no one should fixate on one part of history; not all Africans were slaves. When exploring race, culture and DNA, it is necessary to remember that human beings migrated across the globe for many reasons: climate, weather, famine, war, etc., were behind these movements. One glaring case-in-point is the Roman Empire; there were other large events like the Crusades, the wars between various countries that include the Napoleonic wars and World Wars 1 and 2. You also pointed out in the first video that North African people conquered Spain. Their architecture is quite prominent there to this day. As a Black person, I didn’t take offense at your shock. I have Caucasian ancestors; my maternal grandmother had a grandfather whose father was the offspring of the man who owned him. He had long, straight hair like Buffalo Bill and blue eyes. I know this because it was always talked about by mother. If I took a DNA test and found out that there was a Chinese or Japanese ancestry connection, I would be shocked and I’d wonder how. That wouldn’t make me unhappy but it would make me scratch my head and want to know how that happened. I know that this is a long comment, but I felt it necessary. Don’t fixate on hateful or negative comments, focus on the positive ones. You defended yourself well. 😊

There had been agreement that they were to buy their freedom by working for the nobility another 50 yrs that was made after the assasination of Nicholas II's father.... i think this was made somewhere around 1875 or so..... the peasants weren't yet free at the time of WWI. There people in the British Empire who were chattel property held in feudal servitude until quite late - decades after the American Civil War - Shetland Islands and PEI.

I know this is a while since your reveal video, but I was intrigued by your DNA findings, and I wanted to share a thought on where the Nigerian DNA might have come from. A few months back, I happened across a movie called "Belle." It was very good, tastefully done, and actually a *true story*, chronicling the life of a girl of mixed Nigerian and British ancestry in Aristocratic 1700s England. Her father was a sailor who, in trying to protect her, took her back to England to stay with his family--and as it turned out, she would go on to have a big and positive impact on the society of the time. Could there have been someone like this way back in your family tree? Anyway, here's the link to the film's featurette, if interested in checking it out: czcams.com/video/Xqacgu0ZVNU/video.html . Sara, I just wanted to share a few things and I hope that you don't see me as being rude. I am just sharing. We are all technically African according to genetic studies. We are all Africans and we should embrace this. The DNA tests only go back so far, so you are seeing recent ancestry. The British, Finnish, Iberians, all of them are descendants of Africans anyway. It is a part of our genetic make up. One reason people are upset is because so many people are racists and they are expressing it here in this country (USA) more and more. Racist or white supremacist attitudes exist all over and many aren't even aware. I just saw a video where a college professor had college students indicate the preference of skin color according their culture and these students were from all over the world. The sad fact is, every one of them selected white or light skin color. It is a part of the system that has poisoned our thinking, that one skin color or ethnicity is better than the other. It exists all over, and people are trying to change this. People are recognizing this more and more and they are very sensitive about this. You seem to be an open and receptive person and when I saw your first video, your reaction may have come across to some, as being negative of your recent African ancestry. But as you shared, you were only surprised. In many of these videos that I have seen, there is negativity or disappointment associated with the African ancestry (even if it is veiled) and elation or happiness associated with other ancestries, unfortunately. Most people of color are very sensitive to this, especially African Americans because of the racism experienced in our history and even today. We can pick on this even though people may be unaware or try to deny. Yes, slavery has existed in many countries in the past, however, race based slavery developed and escalated in the USA and this race based slavery resulted in the dehumanization of blacks here, so the experience is different and changes that have occurred have only taken place recently. When I was a child, for example, my parents could not even eat in a restaurant where white people ate. They had to sit in back of buses and give up their seats to whites. They did not have the same rights. I am only sixty years old. So people are still dealing with this, and people are very sensitive to it now, in light of the political climate here now. I am only sharing to try to give you some insight into this experience. You are right, we do not know where your recent African ancestry came from and it does not really matter. You seem to embrace it and that is good. Just to share, I am African American, but my DNA Tests indicate about 66% African and 33% European and most African Americans understand that this admixture occurred through the rape of slaves by white slaveowners in this country (according to studies), so this is the perspective that you may encounter. Just sharing and not hating. Again, thank you for sharing your feedback.

  • @RnB4Sure
    @RnB4Sure Před 5 lety +3

Sara and Kiara: Your African roots did not necessarily result from the slave trade. It most likely comes from the Moors that were in the Iberian peninsula (Spain or Portugal). The commentators forgot to mention that Africans also enslaved other Africans (although differently) and sold many to the European slave traders. Slavery is and has been a condition of life for many all over the world. There was slavery in biblical days and there are still forms of slavery today in Africa, the U.S.A., Asia and other geographical areas. I think most people started enslaving their own race first. It's the dark side of human nature. Henry Lewis Gates (the genealogist of Finding Your Roots) made a documentary showing his trip to Ghana. While there, a dark skinned African women who was a distant descendant of a White slave trader was giving him a tour related to slavery and somewhere along the line she unconsciously revealed she was proud of her White Slave Owner heritage when she spoke despicably about the slaves who were captured and sent to the Americas. Gates was not expecting this attitude and you could see he was highly insulted and disgusted. In short, it appears every race is guilty of slavery esp. enslaving their enemies or people that are not powerful enough to defend themselves.

I am 98% British/Irish, white as Dulux Magnolia, but the 2% is split between Iberian (Spanish/Portuguese) and Arabian Peninsula. Most likely explanation is a traveller across the Bay of Biscay had a knee-trembler with one of my ancestors from Exeter way. That ancestor was likely a Spaniard with recent relations from Saudi or Yemen. I find it interesting, especially because my Grandfather had alluded to just such an ancestor existing. They would have been his Great Great Grandfather (or somewhere close to that).

  • @michaeltaylor8501
    @michaeltaylor8501 Před 2 měsíci

Sometimes even identical twins get variances in the DNA shared (even 10% differences aren't unheard of); so, your Italian ancestry not showing up in your DNA sample isn't too surprising.*
A cousin of mine & I share a maternal grandma whose parents were both born in Scandinavia (one in Norway & the other in Sweden). My DNA test results prominently showed a very high percentage of Scandinavian (particularly Norwegian, Swedish, & Danish) while one has to search through the fine print of my cousin's DNA results to see that Danish might be included. We both definitely have Norwegian ancestory, but this didn't show up in her results like it did in my results; instead, she got a strong connection with Germany which I didn't get (my connections were on some German-speaking countries bordering Germany, like Luxembourg & Switzerland).
Now Ancestry DNA did match us as being 1st cousins because DNA matching is quite accurate whereas ethnicity estimations involve a lot of guesswork.
Note: each of our tests were purchased independently: I bought my own & I purchased my cousin's test through a 3rd party & I didn't tell Ancestry her name or gender (& Ancestry correctly determined that it was a female 1st cousin of mine).
When much DNA is shared it's due to a close relationship & such is fairly easily determined (like parent/child relationship, full syblings, 1st cousins); but, as less & less DNA is shared between matches sharing DNA, the relationship determination - while still accurate - is more & more difficult to specifically determine (1st cousin or 2nd cousin? 🤔 - 3rd, 4th, or 5th cousin??? 🤔 - & so on).
    * = It's good if one can get multiple family members tested & compare results so that one can get a better grasp of the totality of one's recent ancestry (for those who don't already know). Autosomal DNA test results show approximately the last 300 years of one's ancestry. Y-DNA & mt-DNA tests go back many thousands of years, but only along narrow lines [father-to-son, or mother-to-daughter only, respectively, to find haplogroup(s)].

    Hi Sara,
Recently at the movies, Mary Queen of Scots, I noted there was a lot of African people, aparently not slaves, at XVI century in now Great Britain. I know they were actors but why so many African actors if there is no truth on some historical African immigration in UK?. Maybe at that time it was cool to have an entourage with African people. They then got mixed with local population and after centuries their British descendents have forgotten about their African heritage. In fact, Mary Queen of Scots is just one example of other historical British movies with actors of African heritage in UK and there must be a historical reason for them to be there. Then, of course, British people traded African slaves through centuries and it would have been unlikely to believe that they would not have brought some of them to UK as servants, so you can expect them also mixing with locals and their descendents becoming whiter with each generation until they forgot their British African ancestors. However DNA traces that heritage even if is a tiny percentage in comparison of your almost full European ancestry. That is the fun of having a DNA test so you can know about your ancestry reflecting the history of the world.

Can you get father tested but my best advice would be test with either 23&Me or Ancestry. MyHeritage is notorious for giving people populations that they don't have. Nearly everyone gets odd results. Also if you don't have a reliable papertrail to those populations they aren't likely accurate. These tests are all to do with how good you match the reference populations. Will look to see if you have done any other dna tests. As someone who has had an interest in population genetics and genealogy for years I always don't understand why people take some tests so literally. The best would be 23&Me as they give the most accurate results but a lot of people would find them very boring. You most probably don't have Nigerian so test with another company. Another thing you could do is upload your dna to Gedmatch and see what you get on the calculators there. Also look at your matches and see where they come from.

I was going to say I'm kind of not shocked I can see similarities just the color but I can see it. Yes there was a lot of migrating in the last so many hundreds and yes slave trade there was Spanish and many other places and arabs took slaves back then also but to say you got your slavery from that would not really make sense not unless your dad side came from there. So it's big possibility and arabs would also have sex with their slaves its allowed in their beliefs so sad but yeh we all have some good and bad history doesnt make a difference. Just means you are mixed race and so people ignore them.

The truth is that we now know that the slavery as a system was deeply rooted already in the cultures of Mali and Nigeria. There would not have been much a slave trade with out the TOTAL cooperating of AFRICANS doing the slave trading for European goods: Facts.

I think its very likely that the African comes from links with my Iberian ancestors.

  • @aragornmitelsdorf5366

You have to take into account that Fenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigods, and North Africans were also in Iberia for hundreds of years, this means that an Iberian relative could have passed this DNA on to their descendants. Some Spaniards who do not have any distant or close relatives with Greeks, Italians or Blacans, including Finns, today have percentages in their DNA of these political divisions.

The Ibearian is Spain and Portugal which could also be DNA from the African Moores that once conquered Spain and southern France.. The original British people had olive complexion and hair similar to the indigenous people of South America.. But then again most of the indigenous people all over the world were melinated people with different levels of skin tones and hair texture.. The Roman's when they colonizers the world they also conquered England and name it Britanica. After they conquered the British they then went over a famous mountain towards Scotland to conquer and kill off the Scotish people. The Scottish people were able fight them off because they knew the terain very well and the Roman's didnt. However the Roman's did wipe out alot of the British people, and I wouldn't be surprised if most of the British people living today are really Roman's..As for DNA it varies from one family member to a next, even if you share the same parents.. For example, there was a brother and sister who were 100 percent related, same mother and the same father. But when they did their DNA test the sister had more Southern European DNA than her brother did. So they decided to as the DNA Dr, which explained to them how full siblings can be different. Well it has to do with the different ancestors that make us..There is a certain amount of DNA that we each get from our parents and from their ancestors. One sibling might get more of the father's ancestors DNA while the other siblings gets more of the ancestor s

That is living and up close and personal..While a third sibling gets something totally different from each parent. DNA is like the different types of eye colors, you never know what color eyes each child ends up getting.. Anyhow congrats on learning about your ancestors. It's a wonderful feeling of knowing who we are and how far our ancestors have traveled just so we could be here. 👍👍

I wsh you all the best but As you talk about not only seeing history from one aspect you have to also practice what you preach and study history even more. African ancestry doesnt mean you descend from slaves. There is a vast rich African history that doesn't involve slavery. This obsession with associating black people with slavery is ignorant and inaccurate. There has been Black african presence in Europe over the ages. From the Moors-black moors in the Iberian peninsular and Italy and others to the periods and places. its quite narrow minded to just assume slavery. People have invaded, migrated and intermarried since the beginning of time. its nothing really shocking.
Look up blackamoors in Iberia and Europe.

Honestly l was responding mainly from comments on my previous video at my surprise of learning l had African DNA. I was attacked on that video constantly about being naive that of course it came from my British heritage because of what "my people" did too Africans as part of the slave trade. This rhetoric came primarily from the African community. I was merely trying to put another explanation or logic to my DNA result as a result of this. Im not here to give a history lesson as l not a specialist. Im just an amateur family history researcher. But l thank you for your comment that will hopefully educate others to not be so naive and judgmental of history

You can tell folk that your Nigerian ancestors might not have ever been slaves; for, Nigeria borders North Africa & these ancestors might have come together consentually & had a child who then went into Spanish land (as the Moors from North Africa controlled much of Spain for quite a number of years - & not all Moors left at the end of their ruling there, nor did all Moors only take other Moors as spouses).
Now, it's possible that your Nigerian ancestor was a slave; but, as you mentioned, there's no way of telling either way just based upon your having some Nigerian heritage. For some, thinking slave-trade is their default mode of thinking.

it makes me laugh at how im treated for being a spaniard chilean in an anglo country (NZ) treated like an arab, and the big irony is many so called white anglos have french or even spanish in their ancestry. its just that their celtic and germanic hues dominate; blue, hazel, green eyes, blonde, red hair. Also portugal was allies with the UK since the 14th century, it is formally known as the oldest on going alliance in history. Not to mention Camilla, Charles wife has descendancy from sephardic jews in portugal.

It amuses me that those who spew the line that the all the British are descended from operators of the slave trade. Yes of course every single person in Britain was rich, had land and slaves to feed them grapes. There were no miners, farmers ,paupers, tinkers tailers and candlestick makers.
It is exactly like accusing all Africans for being a member of boko haram.
On the topic of where your ancestor may have come into contact with your family, if your ancestor lived near a port such as Liverpool,Clyde,Thames many ships with African sailers docked there to drop off trade goods. It is common to find relationships between locals and African sailors. After all the saying is ' a girl in every port' .

great comment. In addition she assumes her west african ancestry is from slavery which is a common misconception. History is a bit more complex than that.considering there have been people ( including black africans) moving and meeting with other people all over the world various different reasons and at various periods. She is simply a product of this. Its nothing incredible. Slavery was only one aspect of the population of africa which is so large and spread out over a vast continent.

The African in you could have come from Germany or some other places people focus on modern slavery truth is your ancestors may not have been a slave.
Your asking how this could be well take a look at the videos that talk about when black people ruled the world, in many European countries you can find religious items that show the Virginia Mary and baby Jesus as black people also images that show black people even the king of England married a half black princess from Germany, there are many ways you could have gotten thoes genes, I think since it's so low a number you should look past modern slavery for answers remember that the Romans were there in England and had slaves when Rome fell thoes people mixed into the population you also had the holy roman empire which is part of your history that empire had black kings in it look at the history of religion that isn't or hasn't been white washed the painting of Jesus Christ was ordered by the Pope and it is a painting of his nephew? History has been white washed and we all have been lied to ask yourself how can you worship a black God and enslave the people who looks like him history is written by the ones in charge and in that part of the world it's been rewritten many times I'm a black man born in the United States of America and I have white genes in me but that doesn't make me who I am it's a part of what I am my skin is dark and my eyes are hazel I am still me I just had to deal with it longer than you, so check out the stuff I told you about and continue being you.

Not really known but some of the countries you’ve mentioned had Black ancestry. Scandinavia specifically Denmark and Sweden had a Black population during the Viking era... The same with Ireland, Scotland, and Wales... There is a few books you might want to consider reading is Ancient and Modern Britons by David MacRitchie written in the late 1800s and Nature Knows No Color Line by J. A. Rogers.
No, your ancestry probably didn’t have any enslaved people... In fact the reality is written such books I mentioned above and more books that may be referenced within those same books...
    1) Don’t listen to such BS from people who don’t know anything.
    2) The Muslims you mentioned were not Arabs they were in fact Africans, more specifically they were called Moors...
    3) The indigenous people of Europe were predominantly from the continent of Africa through migrations.
Some people will hate and probably respond quite rudely to what I’m saying, but that’s quite alright, I would suggest they read the book by MacRitchie and others, since he was appalled that his Scottish ancestry were of Black descent... Hell the prefix Dub of Dublin means Dark or Black... And know there are many places, towns, cities with the name Black or in the Old Languages regarding Black in its name within the UK. The Moors were all over Europe, in the UK anyone with a surname like Moore, Morris, Dougall, Douglass and countless others will discover Black ancestry from the UK... Be happy and feel blessed...

Plenty of dna studies on these population and no they don't. Also as someone who has an interest in dna testing and genealogy there are plenty of videos of people taking these tests and they don't get African. Tests are only going back 6 to 10 generations anyway. What I can say is that MyHeritage is the worst test so I would recommend testing with either Ancestry or 23&Me. I've tested with all the dna companies including MyHeritage, Ancestry, 23&Me, FTDNA, LivingDNA. FTDNA are going to ydna and mtdna testing.
