California's Lost Desert Town 🇺🇸

- Just outside of Death Valley National Park is a lost desert town with people who've decided to live away from it all. Join me as we journey into this special place where the locals say they live in absolute freedom, without cops, crime, or any of the hassles (and few conveniences) of the modern world... a strong community isolated from the rest of American society.

Thanks for joining in today guys! I just want to give credit where credit's due. It might look like it's just me making these videos but my wife Natalia is a huge component to making these weekly videos possible. She was up until 6:00am this morning finishing up on the edit so we could post at our usual Sunday time of 11:00am EST. She puts her heart and soul into these video teasers and final touches to make sure you get the best video we can offer. If you're liking these videos please give Natalia a big shout-out!
all the while i watched this video i was thinking of the hard work she does (as editor?). you're lucky, peter.
Isn't such a blessing to have a great woman / partner by your side!
Good 👍 Job Natalia
Thanks for the great video and your hard behind the scenes work, Natalia!
Thanks Natalia for all your hard work!!
Your "off the grid" videos are really my preferred ones. I like your way of meeting people, talking to them without judging. Much more interesting than any mainstream documentary, great job
100% correct imo.
THese people are bizarre. IF you cant function in society then why? I guess that's how things gotta be sometimes.
@@breadfan9 It's more of a question why society has failed them. If you come to the desert and meet some of these folks, you will 100% get it. Tired of playing the game. It's not for everyone, but worth it for the space and views and space alone...🌵🤠
My dream life!!!! My friends think I am crazy to want to live isolated in the desert. The desert sounds are healing.
The wind is as miserable as the heat.
You're going to spend More money to live isolated. All necessities cost more. you may save money on housing.
Aside from that you might love it.
Winters with little wind aren't any big deal.
Its quiet and you can see.for miles.
I would love to live there. No one to bother me. Just the peace and quiet I love!❤
My dream as well! Complete isolation!
There's a reason why they call it death valley. the summer AVERAGE is over 100. No thank you
Over 100 is NOTHING. Haha It’s that way all summer in areas like Ridgecrest CA, Boron CA, & Bakersfield. Death Valley gets up over 111 all the time in the summer. It got up all the way to 134 F.
Outstanding. Being a Californian, motorcyclist and something of a desert rat, I’ve visited the town several times over the years. I’ve entered up over “the falls” route as well as from the highway. Its a fascinating place to be sure. You managed to find some of the most interesting folks to talk with, as you always do. Well done.
"We have had only one fight in thirty years!"
Peter "but you've been divorced twice"
😂😂😂 that was a savage comment
They really forgot they were divorced twice lol
Very interesting. I happen to live at the mine that was spoken of 4 days a week.
What was not mentioned is the lack of light pollution out here.
It's a star gazers paradise.
I was stationed just South of there at Ft Irwin and in 1997 out in the field there I had a front row seat to the two comets (Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake) that were visible in the night sky for months with the naked eye. I saw them even better when I viewed them through my night vision goggles.
The lack of light pollution in much of the Mojave Desert is inargueable.
I could add that the desert is a photographer's paradise; photographers are thick on the ground out here.
I think I know where this is (but my lips are sealed) and I would like to come out and sop up some local color (but NOT like Lucy and her grape-stomping fiasco)
@@joewenzel5142 we camped out there and what a show it was to watch the jets training they would zip through them canyons and they would be level to us on a hillside
@@davidroyer5049 Yeah you could say it's really about "Survival of the Fittest" out there. 😂
I hope this place never goes away, it's a very rare thing to find a place that is as free as this town. I've lived in Maine for over 20 years and have never seen a town that is not embroiled in politics one way or another. To know that a free town still exists in our United States is a relief to this tired soul.
They are not free. They are California Liberals and they don't tolerate ANYONE who is not a socialist Liberal.
Slab city 😮
Maine. Wells, Sanford, Biddeford, Portland, (Nova Scotia CA), North Berwick, Kennebunkport, Kennebunkport, Eliot, great place(s).
Grew up in New England (Boston), family in Wells/North Berwick. Now in Pasadena CA. Miss the Atlantic.
🕊️😎
Yeah but they still need society to eat, and it looks like they all have their properties in a city ...
Not judging but they are not that free.
Still it's a nice place 🙂
Agree❤
These remote, desert towns are my favourite videos to watch. The openness, the friendly people, and freedom.
Please do more of these remote US towns, I love them!
@A S ARAKNAS
Go out and explore them yourself
So cool.. JEsus is king
There has been other CZcams videos of this town. I won’t mention it out of respect but it’s no secret. It’s a pretty cool place and I plan to go there in a couple months when start my camping trip. Loved your video, well done!
It’s so mind boggling that, in all of these series you do, the people are so different, yet it’s all in the same country. 🇺🇸
It's a pretty massive country though
Yeah you got to get out more bro lol and when you get out don't be afraid to speak to people.
The US is soooo diverse in so many ways.
Everyone lives here. Anyone one person that you can think of of any race, gender, ethinicity, etc....they're here. Somewhere. Hell, I met someone from Greenland that lives in Oregon. No shit.
We live in a big country.
I think this is one of my favorite videos! Max and the twice married twice divorced couple are terrific people! “I’m a Maserati stuck in neutral”
When people around me tries to describe Americans based their narrow minded view when reading about world politics I often bring up these kind of warm, wholesome and free-minded people that I usually bump into when traveling around in these wonderful parts of the states such as Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah. I meet them outside gas stations, at motels, in roadhouse restaurants etc. etc. The American people is sure as hell not the government. This is along with the nature and scenery one of the reasons why I love the US and take the early road-trips around in the area, not for the shopping malls, the amusement parks or any of the plastic surreal parts of the country which usually is what people from Europe refer to when describing their trips to the US! When people say that they love the Italians or the French mentality they’ve never been around to meet the authentic Americans /Love from Sweden 🇸🇪
Sweden 🇸🇪 has my heart! I’ve only traveled out of the states to two locals , Peru and Sweden x2. There is something about Sweden that feels like home to me. I think I belong there😂. I felt like the people were fairly “ closed off” but yet helpful and friendly when needed?. I feel like when you actually do befriend someone there and gain their trust, you have a friend for life. I made a hand full of lifelong friends while visiting the Bushcraft Festavelan even if we only keep in touch via social. I attended the festival twice (should have been an annual visit) but then the world fell apart and I don’t think I’ll ever get to go back. That breaks my heart. I visited Stockholm and Uppsala and some surrounding countryside. I loved the slower pace of life and the way people seemed fully engaged in what ever they were doing , especially when conversing with someone. It’s been a few years but I don’t remember seeing everyone’s heads buried in thier cell phones.
I love how calm, well spoken and none judgemental Peter is in his videos. A humble dude making fascinating videos doesn't go unnoticed. His questions are focused, insightful but always respectful. Awesome.
Very well said!

You should take a trip to Cerro Gordo and visit Brent Underwood! He also got a channel called Ghost Town Living. Would be a great collab
I like the town of Cerro Gordo but Brent is an oddball.
@Hailey
It’s really hypocritical to be so anti-mining, but want to preserve an old mining town.
He is just one of a long list of edgy go-getters that wants to turn an old ghost town into his hipster bed and breakfast.
It would be nice if one of these owners of Cerro Gordo, that supposedly care about the place and area so much, would clean up the MASSIVE pile of waste and toxic tailings that are littering his property…..and ACTIVELY leeching into the waterways.
Nah…don’t worry about the environmental waste you just bought….go build an air B&B.
That REALLY gives back to the environment.
At least that Canadian Mining company he sabotaged would have actually HAD to lean up the 100 years of waste….we know hipster dude wont.
Omg we loveeeeee Brent’s channel!!!! We hope to go up someday and help on one of his volunteer days
I want to see his shop with all the relics
If Peter could venture up there now that would be awesome. I don’t think he’s far from where this town is
@@Meekerextreme I'd assume only oddballs would use their entire life savings to buy an old decrepit mining town lol

Thank you Natalia and Peter for always showing respect to the people and the environment in your videos. Also thank you for taking us down the road less traveled, showing us places we never knew existed!!
Funny, I was born in Keeler and my parents soon moved Bishop, one of the town's people shopping places. We left California in the middle 50s and now I live in Arizona. I am certainly fascinated with the old mining towns. I love watch the Cerro Gordo video near that area also. It amazes me that people live in the hottest place in America. Another great video, Peter.
I was wondering if Ghost Town Living would be mentioned 😊
If there’s one thing I LOVE about Peter in all of his videos is how he shows respect and unbiased views to the people he meets and interviews , so much so that You can’t tell whether he agrees or disagrees or likes or dislikes something. That’s growth on a different level , and I have learned something from you. Keep up the great work!
To live away from anybody else... is a wise decision in my opinion !!! Life-changing clip bro, keep it up with the great work ✅
I would do exactly the same if I had the f... money 🤑 (atm I'm living in the f... ghetto)
That's what my plans are in rural Utah
A part of me hopes that the future of the whole world sees people forming their own small communities and leave the politicians the media and all that guff to fester in their swamps.
The oasis with the fish seemed unreal... that was amazing... wonder if they put those fish in there and bred them

America is truly a beautiful country. We have such varied landscapes from deserts to mountains. Thank you for bringing so many varieties of people to us as well. Love your channel. Great vid
I spent 3 weeks traveling the country last August. My wife and I were trying to hit as many mountain biking destinations as possible. It made me realize I'm definitely about this life. We're not able to do it full time right now because of our jobs, but we're planning another 3 week trip, and I think we might buy the RV this time instead of renting.
What I really love about watching your documentaries is that I get to listen to interesting people with interesting lives and be presented with ideas that make me think outside the box. I love it!

You'd probably enjoy the Moab area if you've not been.
I was able to find the location just by what was disclosed in the video. I live in Texas. If you really want to keep locations "secret", I would recommend editing out obvious giveaways. Interesting video, enjoyed it. Next time I visit the famous valley, I'll try to make it there.
Same - distances etc...

There is an entire doccumentary on this town. It is not really a secret. He did it as a courtesy.

It's so interesting hearing people talk about this little town. My grandparents still own property here. My grandpa was a miner there and that's where my mom was raised. Oh the stories I've heard. Going up to their old house at the mine riddled with bullet holes. Their property is actually shown in this video. It's awesome. Hearing the conversation over the hippies and rednecks is the truth. My grandpa told storied about always keeping guns because that's how bad the fued was.
by definition, if you are a genuine hippy then you are emphatically not into guns. Just sayin...
Just fascinating to see perspective about life from these folks. World has become so congested and life became so stressful that we often forget about freedom in our life we may cherish time to time. Those were the days when folks used to enjoy late evening coffee at front porch. Not anymore.

I want to live there. I have always wanted to live a secluded life. Either the mountains or there. As I am older now, the desert sounds a heck of a lot better than 7 feet of annual snow.
Enjoyed this as I've lived remote offgrid. For practical reasons moved to small town. When you have sense of community, purpose, belonging you have everything. I struggle with that balance every day. Want to move... unsure where. These folks seem so thankful and content. I admire that.

I am quite familiar with the town. I have done a considerable amount of exploration to include several mining claims just south of this town. In my early life I lived in a small desert town in North Central Nevada, I love it high and dry and with few primates around. Nevada and a few parts of remote California are still my favorite.
I was a long time friend of Gordon Newell and his wife. Several times he invited me to go there and sculpt, something I did before I got a "real" job.

I 100% want to move here. We spent much of my childhood traveling through the New Mexico, California and Colorado in an old camper trailer. I've always done well in the wide open.
This area reminds me of my hometown in the mountains Morocco, North Africa.I go there in summer and just listen to the slow life, that is what I call real sweet life.

That was such a cool visit. Great folks doing their thing in their town. Peaceful.
Death Valley is amazing. I loved camping out there in an RV with my family when I was a kid. The desert is beautiful and peaceful. Sometimes you see Coyotes or other wild animals but the night is really quiet and its interesting to see nature that hasn't been completely developed.
Not sure what is beautiful about the dessert...I realize it's subjective but for the life of me, I don't understand.
@@waynewhitworth4932
It's "beautiful" in a different way. Sure, the desert is not like the mountains, beaches, or fall colored rolling hills of the Appalachias. You have to be from the area or have lived in the desert to appreciate it.
However, I encourage you to look up places in Utah. Badlands National Park is incredible. Never been there, but I want to visit someday. Arches National Park is amazing too.
I would call those places "beautiful" because of how unique the landscape is.
The California high deserts are rather boring though. I can attest to that since I'm out of SoCal. The Mojave is quite barren except for places like Joshua Tree and Anza-Borrego.
The Sonoran desert of Arizona has a lot of amazing sights too. Sedona is really cool. Took a family trip there many years ago.
There is a lot of life in the desert, especially in our North American deserts. You just need to know where to look.
On the flip side, I don't like the coast/ocean because I find it "boring" like you do with the deserts. You have two views, open empty water and land to your left/right.
SoCal has mundane coasts out here, but I do admit that the Northern California coast and the coasts of Oregon are absolutely amazing.
Those coasts are stunning. Just my 00.02.
@@waynewhitworth4932 only beautiful for me when i have my dirt bike 😜

This was my first video I saw by Peter. Since then I am more and more drawn in by his documentaries. I watched this one two times. 😊
I love that place! I remember watching Rose paint the front of the dance hall years ago. She was so nice, as well as the only one around. The waterfall was beautiful, and the cemetery was so interesting. Thanks for sharing this!
I've been to the waterfall once, in 2014. The trail to it got wiped out by the August 2022 Flash Flood, so it's not accessible at the moment, but I assume the Park Service will repair the trail and open it up again at some point in the next few months. I've never visited the town, but it's on my bucket list. There are several little towns in Nevada along US-95 that are similar, like Goldfield, Mina and Luning. No services other than electric power. No gas station or grocery store closer than 50 miles away, yet a few dozen people hang on in these places. Must take a very special breed to live in such remote places.
I worked at Edwards AFB which is in the high desert country, known as the Moja Desert.
The vast desert experience taught me that I was truly insignificant.
Yet the beauty and majesty of the desert night sky never failed to hold me in awe.
I live in Lancaster and I can't wait to get out of this shit hole.
Once again thank you for a great story.
Thanks Peter and Natalia!
I was just there for a weekend trip, eating lunch at Bishop and other places. It's fascinating to me how people can organize their lives in the middle of nowhere. Death Valley has its unique vibe, so thank you for sharing. Great way to understand the conditions there.

My wife and I are searching such a place with a Cemetery. I am 83 and wife 72 with Alzheimer's and just want to be left alone from everyone. Everyone else trys to rule your lives. We own our California Home and can afford to buy a piece of land and have a Motor Home. We feel we have as good of a chance to live without society as we do without it.
You posted that 7 month ago, have you followed through with your plan?

So many wonderful unique souls I would never have the pleasure of knowing without your videos. Thank you.
Hi Peter, I recently started to watch your video's. It makes me want to go to the secluded places in the mid-west, the drought, the dust. I want to say that I also really like the respectfull approach you have to the local communities. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Natalia you did amazing! Thank you for your dedication and effort
