Don't forget that for the Brightline project we are talking about new train lines dedicated to high speed. This should be high speed rail. No concessions. Dedicated lanes which allow full use of TGVs. Too bad Alstom was not chosen. Otherwise there would already be trains traveling at 350km/h. Alstom has been supplying trains to the SNCF for 40 years, we are in the 5th generation of TGV (the latest the TGM M cousin of the Avelia) Regarding the Northern Corridor the difficulty is having to adapt, to deal with aging infrastructure, share the network with regional and freight trains. Sorry, but I don't call it a high-speed line. And wanting to run a train like the Avelia is almost a waste. A train that will be limited despite the fact that it could do so much more. Alstom will get the bad publicity, it's not fair.
There were delays in the first Acela sets in the early 2000’s before they finally made their first runs. It’s now early November, 2023 and 2024 is not far off.
The first Acelas turned out to be too fat, 6" too wide, and therefore couldn't tilt. They have never run at their design speed. The extra weight made the brakes fail (since they were designed for a lighter train) and many years later a drawbar failed from metal fatigue, also from the higher weight from the design error.
As much as I want to blame Alstom, it’s really the northeast corridor… Until they work with the gateway project, the new Acela won’t reach their full potential.
FALSE: The Acela 2 was designed to work with the Northeast Corridor at the desired speed. The Acela 1 was also, except it's too wide to tilt correctly.
@@tonyburzio4107 keyword in your statement “desired”… that doesn’t mean full potential. The trains are designed to go 220 mph… there is no spot on the northeast corridor where it gets to that speed. The max it can go is 160 and that’s only on small sections… why? Because the northeast corridor need to be upgraded. It was supposed to go into service in 2021… now it’s 2024.
It’s 100% Alstoms fault. Read about how they’re doing financially now too with layoffs. They absolutely dropped the ball with this train and all the terrible engineering mistakes.
@@FFred-us9tw then how come every other train made by alstrom lasts 30 to 40 years and does not need replacement after just 20 years? France uses tgv's from the late 80s still, without problems, and at higher speeds.
@@melaniedrogr951 Our current Acela was made by Alstom and Bombardier over 20 years ago and is still running. The issue is the engineers and designers at Alstom now are clearly not up to the task like they were 20 years ago. They knew what was required and they bid on the project and won. But the design phase obviously did not go well. Just because they produced something that worked Before doesn’t mean they can do it again. Plenty of companies make lots of successful things and then end up with some failures. Clearly, this is one of them.
Office oif Inspector General, report of September 29 2023 has all the goods on the issue.
Some nitpicks: Amtrak has not taken posession of any new Avelia Liberty trains, Alstom has parked 6 on Amtrak prooperty and Alstom si conducting tests. Formal testing by Amtrak can't begin until Alstom has staistied FRA requirements with copumter models. Part of problems is the useless banking system which is new. It predicts where curves are to be (based on positioN/GPS and good track geometry data) so that banking can begin just before entering curve so passengers don't get sick.
It should be noted that this train is a hybrid TGV-M locomotive and Pendolino coaches both downgraded to US standards and with minumum US components to meet "made in America" requirements and hence delays and problems. This is not a high speed train imported from Europe, it is a new train made from a mismash of designs and components and this untested because essentally a new train.
But at least FRA lifted it requirement that trains can't be modern (which is what forced the current Acelas to be made of heavy steel for instance).
Track conditions limit train speeds, so introduction of this train won't magically cut travel times. But it will attract passnegers because of nice interios, alas not for average human as business class on NE corridor priced out of reach of normal people.
Note: Alstom started mass production of these Liberty trains before the design was validated and now has 12 or the 28 trains sets done, and 22 of 28 cafés done, so one finial design approved, all those will nee dto be retrofitted and modified, including some known structural changes.
Amtrak has had to reduce Acela branded trains because they have had to cannibalize at least one or more old Acella trains for parts.
(note this is Amtrak's fault for not contining to order such parts be made by suppliers).

If they have so many problems STOP DELIVERING THEM. i mean seriously. "These trains have lots of problems but we finished building one here you go Amtrak. Good luck with all these problems we wont fix first."
The reason they don't go into service is because they have to be fixed first ...
Fixed implies they have a fix, they do not.
You can’t stop a production line once it begins. All the suppliers for the components are working on a schedule. They have to complete the order of all the components and complete this order of train sets before they can start on their next project. It’s ultimately cheaper to keep manufacturing and delivering them and make the necessary changes after the fact that it is to completely stop production and potentially add months, if not years long delays to restart a production order. It’s how everything is built these days.
They're still not running. That's what REALLY is happening.
The trains sets have been renamed, they are now called the Amtrak Defectiva.

That is absolutely incorrect information.
And another thing get rid of that crappy European horn. That horn will more likely than not cause safety issues due to passengers and individuals at level crossings not recognizing that thing over a K5LA. So the crappy European horn find a way to put in a hybrid K5LA.
The basic safety factor, started, carried on and carried into the future is still the foundation, eg: the tracks and the ground its laid on, you can't run 155mph on a freight line roller coaster line, superfast trains have been around for over 60 years, not only in Japan but most of Europe [I remember going to school in the Netherlands on the train and having to step back on the platform when an intercity came trough at 120mph IN 1966, AT AGE 14, COME ON AMERICA, CATCH UP,

Seems to me that the track quality is not up to high speeds, nor are the freight-first companies willing to adjust to passenger first. Congress, it's your fault.

the problem is, Alstom should never have embarked on such a project. TGVs are on dedicated tracks only. They will get an unjustified reputation. Siemens are going to show off with the Brightline....a new line completely dedicated to exploiting their trains to their full potential. Easy, Alstom has been doing the same for over 40 years in France. Short....
years and years of research and testing, when what they should do is simpler, is buy fast trains in Europe
These are European trains. They’re made by a French company. The issue is the crash standards and safety standards in the US are much higher than they are in Europe so they can’t use off the shelf European trains in the US.
Fix your tracks first.

When next spring rolls around, don't be surprised if there's another delay. Amtrak has once again proven their total inability to provide anything resembling a "world class" service. Their usual battle cry, IT AIN'T OUR FAULT!, doesn't hold up this time. It IS their fault for buying a train that's incompatible with the infrastructure. Sure it will go into service next spring; April 31st!
There is no train that is compatible and can reach the high speeds requested. You run on ancient infrastructure that is nowhere near the quality you would get in other countries. You do your best to design a train that can run on it but in the end you still have issues. And unless someone is willing to spend over a hundred billion dollars to modernize the infrastructure, you will keep on getting these issues.
The delays are Alstom. Not Amtrak. Alstom knew the requirements and what was needed. The trains are filled with defects and flaws that are no fault of the line they will be operated on. They are design and manufacturing flaws

Alstom now owns Bombardier so they basically are including the coach design which is loosely related to the old LRC coaches in Canada.

So cute, in Europe intercity trains have a minimum capacity of 500 people, goint up to 1000 in buisy lines. This trains are so small
These aren't normal intercity trains, they're our HSR trains, which will have hourly frequency upon entering service, holding 386 people. Our intercity trains hold anywhere from 400 to 700 people each with our regional trains often going up to 1,200+.
