  • Hyper makes some of the most budget friendly eBikes available, and they are sold by Walmart which makes them accessible to everyone. Previously, I reviewed the E-Ride MTN 26. Today, we get a look at it's big brother - the E-Ride MTN 29. This bike features 29er wheels and Disc brakes. Are there any other features and is it worth the extra $200 over the 26er version?

    I have the 26 from last year sales and works great. One thing to mention is whatever ebike you go with make sure they have parts and great customer service. My forks and battery charger both went out within a few months and called hyper. We tried diagnosed over the phone and decided to send me anew charger and a pair of forks. Great service at their end. I highly recommend. Nice vid

      Besides the electronic stuff. It's still a bicycle. Which can be easily upgraded from any parts of a normal bike. So you don't have to rely on specific parts from a company. Besides the battery possibly. That's mainly the only thing to worry on. But other then that it's pretty flexible.

    Appreciate the 29" vs. 26" comparison. I still have my 26" Mountain bought 3 years ago at $398 and I would still buy that one today. I really like the extra acceleration, lower overall weight, lower center of gravity, and relative compactness of the 26". And the caliper brakes work just fine and don't squeak.
    I'm also glad you mentioned the "tallness" of the 29"; that's something I would not want to compromise on. The 26" just feels lower to the ground and optimal somehow and I'm 6' 1" so I guess I'm just used to that posture.
    For anyone considering either of these I would only add that my battery lasted just two years with regular use and the replacement seems to be consistently available at $200, so a not insignificant extra cost to consider, although I have no idea whether two years' life is above or below industry standard.

    Just unboxed my e-ride city. As a former Schwinn mechanic (yes they used to have such things) I have unboxed a lot of bikes. I have seen boxes from Schwinn Chicago arrive in Oklahoma in much worse shape. I've only put about 20 mi on the bike so far, but it seems to be exactly what I wanted. A little bit of boost, and maybe slightly better range than advertised.
    There are touches that surprised me, like the seat stay bosses for a frame lock, something you typically see only on European bikes. The pedals are bearing instead of sleeved, which is also nice, and the wheels were surprisingly true out of the box. I did not get the Shimano shifting - but the Falcon stuff will hold up until I decide whether I need to go with seven speeds or not.
    All in all, I have to agree. For 400 bucks holiday pricing the only direct price competition I see is the Jetson bolt, and that's not much competition.

    Honestly these bikes and brakes don't matter. My best bike is a 1996-98 circa 26" Gary Fisher Mamba. Bike companies are just trying to "reinvent the wheel" with all this extra crap. I have everything from an $8,000 Giant road bike to a $98 Huffy bike and other than the 90's Gary Fisher my favorite is the $98 Huffy 26" the lightweight Giant is nice, but for $8,000 it better be. My riding experience did not improve from a $98 Huffy to the $8,000 Giant, the only difference was in my head as far as enjoying the ride and outdoors.

      youre both assuming their comment had anything to do with gearing when they probably were talking about the throttle from stop being potentially bad for your motor, depending on the motor, battery, speed controler, and weight.

      I still haven't upgrade the front V-brakes yet. I got new pads, But the calipers are stock. The rear is a Shimano Deore system. Really nice spotting power even for V-brakes. The stocks flex to much when holding down the levers and causing less stopping performance. So the rear being upgraded helped reduce the flex in the calipers and tighten them up for the pads to squish more tighter.

It's 55 lbs with 27.5" wheels, 180 mm disc brakes, and a 36v 10.4 Ah battery. They're $598 CAD on clearance right now, and it feels solid. Oversized everything. The frame is built like a tank. The poorer acceleration is not a larger wheel's resistance to spinning. (spinning up the tire)
    It is because it takes more power to move you (and more torque to accelerate you) one circumference of the wheel on a larger wheel.
    A 26' tire has a circumference of 81.68, while a 29 inch tire has a circumference of 91.106, a difference of nearly a foot. That means for every rotation of the wheel, you are moving nearly a foot further. It is as if you have shifted to a higher gear, the effect is exactly the same thing.

    I haven't been following your channel lately, and don't know a lot about bikes, but, I never imagined e-bike and mountain biking to be compatible. Why? Well, going downhill I wouldn't think you'd need battery assist. Going uphill when you would, I thought the burden on the motor, sometimes exceeding the ability to either power you completely by the e-bike's motor, (do they even do that), or handle the switching between the rider and the electric motor, would be too much for it. Obviously I was wrong and don't understand the mechanics of it. Do you get this from others much?
    Anyway, it seems to be a very competent system at a competitive price. And it looks fine. No, it looks great - it looks like an ordinary, budget mountain bike - not an e-bike. - I guess by the way they have merged the bulky battery and motor into the frame. Your opinions on the control buttons are quite valid. But if they had made the control buttons sleeker or removable, you could park this at the bus stop or at the parking garage at work and worry less that it would be recognized as a $600 e-bike and stolen.

    • @KillerRaptorr
      @KillerRaptorr Před 2 lety +1

      Most downhill mountain bike people don't ride hub driven E-bikes. They do Mid-drives. Mid-drives have 10times better hill climbing performance and it frees the wheels of bulky hubs. Putting motor power on the chain vs the hubs. So it has more torque to climb then hubs do. And since the mid-drive and battery are both in the middle of the bike frame it keeps the center of gravity well on the bike for better riding.
      Besides weight comes into topic also. These aren't as light as high end ones that try to shave off as much poundage. Which some are like 30-40pounds. While this is about 50pounds stock.
      Also the Controller panel on the left isn't truly a give away to it being a E-bike. It's mainly due to the fact it says 'ELECTRIC ASSISTED 36volt" on the side of the battery in bold letters. Maybe some new paint could fix that. But yeah. Plus the rear Hub kinda gives it away. Anyone knowing bikes would find the rear being largely different then a standard hub would find it probably something more interesting.

      It largely depends on your performance look. 26inch wheels will be more for swifter response and turning in tighter places. While 29inch wheels will not have as much twitch response. But they'll run over anything much better. This is mainly goes for any bike with such wheel base.
      Both bikes though are built really tough. Even for a small thin frame. The metal is the same as high grade high end bikes using 6061 t6 alum. The small frame may look weak. But the tubing inside is thicker gauge. Compared to high end bikes that widen their frames, But thin out the tubing inside. So the hypers will handle rough performance.

      Have had a few ebikes now and never felt like I wanted more gears. 1x8 would be all you ever need. A 7 speed chain is more robust for the torque you are pulling on it too. If I bought one of these I would put a better fork on, maybe one of the Chinese air forks, wait out the tires and change the grip shift to trigger so I could put better grips on. Swap the brakes to some Zoom cable actuated hydraulics. So maybe 200-225. But with the 29er that puts it up toward 850, at which a little more money gets you all that stuff already done for you with something like an NCM Moscow but with better controller, bigger battery and better 48v motor ( not counting fit and finish) all things equal though, seems like a decent way to try out ebikes without breaking the bank. And probably great for many people just looking for a boost to their trail ride! And at 50ish pounds it will be easier to transport and maneuver it around or up stairs.

    • @KillerRaptorr
      @KillerRaptorr Před 2 lety

      They might have a 9speed mega range freewheel. Not sure. But i'd go with a microshift advent. It's the only derailuer that has a clutch that is strong and doesn't spring around.
      I believe the stock are 600wide bars. 700mm is cutting it to dirtbike style grips. so 760mm would be pretty wide. Stick with something that is near to your shoulder length size. The larger bars you go, The less twitch you get for turning. Plus if you keep the long stick out stem.
      Narrower stem and narrower bars give you more turning ratio at faster response. But larger stem and larger wider bars lessens this. So it'd be more better for on road because of the less twitch/turn response.
