    No illegal substances were used in the making of this video nor do we recommend or promote using any substances, this short film is for entertainment purposes only!!
    Hey, guys! This was one of the biggest challenges I have ever taken upon myself. We filmed all of this in a span of 2 days basically and I edited everything in just under 2 days, 12h in premiere per day, for 2 days straight, now that's some commitment! Now...a little about this short film
    Honestly, I am not that happy with how it turned out because the story is complicated and most of you probably won't understand many things and a lot of it won't make sense either, however this was a challenge I wanted to take upon myself - to direct, film, edit, capture audio, do the lighting - do everything by myself. Annie was the one who wrote the script and it was her first ever attempt at writing a script and both of us have many, many things to learn in script-writing and story-telling, so I promise next time we will definitely put more effort into the story!
    Equipment used for this video:
    - Sony A7S3, 10bit 422, All-I - amzn.to/2QXiaXo
    - Sirui Jupiter Cine lens (Sirui sent us this lens to try out and I liked the image coming out of it so much that we decided to put it to the test by making a shortfilm with it! You can check out the lens here - www.indiegogo....

    can you do a tutorial about how to color grade your sky to make it so vivid and vibrant, and the dreaming VFX how you pull it off? I love your work. This is an excellent job. I would love to have this type of knowledge from you.

    A really solid short film. The dialog at the end is what killed me, I don't think it was needed. That being said, I liked the Jupiter lenses, Bokeh and the colors are really good, and the Macro... wow! chromatic aberration is kinda noticeable though, especially on those first shots at the gas station. Would love to see how you did those crazy effects. Nice job!!

      Oh yeah, we literally had no time for the ending so decided to mess around a bit and make something so cheesy it would make us vommit ourselves :D But you know, it's all about having fun, so why not. The CA is definitely visible, but I actually like that about the lens, it gives a vintage-ish kind of a look to the image, but that's just personal taste! Thank you for the comment, Fled!

    Hey, guys! I would kindly ask you to read the description so you can understand why some things didn’t work out the way we intended to 😄 I know we failed with the story a bit, but we shot the entire thing in 2 days and I only had 2 days to edit this piece, anyway, let me know your thoughts on this as well as how we could improve ourselves in story-telling. I know there will be a lot of things you guys will be able to point out and I can’t wait to read the criticism! Thank you, love you all ❤️
    Btw, we made the ending cheesy AF because we ran out of ideas and had no time to shoot anything else, so enjoy 😄
    Also, I see this platform as a place to grow, I am far from being a professional filmmaker, so if you have any tips for me to improve my craft on, I will be more than happy to chat with you guys. Write me on IG - its.gundars.magone

      The camera work is quite beautiful and you got a great image out of the A7S3. Especially the night shots, somehow you got the footage to look sharp and clean despite the absurd amount of noise reduction this camera uses at high ISOs (this is actually the main reason I sold mine as I love to film at night but hated the muddy, washed out too high noise reduction). Obviously the story needs work, I don't mind it being silly, but it doesn't make sense at the end. Is the other woman her boss, her colleague, or a friend? From the intro, it seems like Annie is talking to her boyfriend who she thinks is over-protective, that was my interpretation. So to see this girl appear at the end, and then she is asking about her car, and I'm left wondering if Annie borrowed her car then how did the other girl get to the cabin? We don't see a second car so yeah, very confusing and out of place ending. The rest of the story was fine up until that point.

    Great job, particularly given the time you had, and doing it solo 👍 Some wonderful shots and colours, the macro capabilities of the Jupiter really add creative possibilities. Love it. Which focal length/s did you use?
    One reflection for me is that many of the shots in the pre-drink section are locked off, then in the forest there's much more camera movement. Then at the end there's a combination of locked off and moving shots. Was this a stylistic choice to differentiate the before-during-after I wonder? For me some of the initial stages lacked a bit of flow perhaps because there were so many cuts between static shots, and that contributed to some of the shot transitions being a bit jumpy. But having a different style for the different stages makes sense. Maybe worth differentiating between the before and after more via the grade instead and adding more of your excellent camera movement, which might aid flow. Just a thought.
    One analytical thought: in the dialog at the end you seem to have broken the 180 degree rule by switching sides from daughter to mother, but it kinda works. Maybe stylistic choice for contrast between mum being lit by the sun and daughter back lit? Anyways, sorry this is so long, hope the reflections are useful - all in the spirit of supporting wonderful creative endeavour 😉
    Kudos for putting this out so quickly, keep at it!

    • @DreamDuoFilms
      @DreamDuoFilms  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you so much for the CC! Honestly, when it comes to camera movement, I wanted to do it all on a tripod, but due to time constraints, at some points I was like "Fuck it" and decided to just free-flow it all, so that's my bad for sure haha, about the 180 degree rule, I completely forgot about that rule, to be honest with you. Anyway, so many mistakes made in this piece, but hey, the comments you guys give me motivate me to become better and to start noticing these little details, so thank you for that!
      I really appreciate you guys writing long comments like these, after all, the best way to learn is to experiment and use the advice you're given from other professionals or viewers so that you can understand others' points of view, so thank you so much for this!

    Dreamduo, question: The mushroom close-ups (and rack focus from her to the closest mushrooms which appear really close to camera).. were those purely the lens itself or punch-ins in post production or .. were diopters used? If Diopters, can you recommend any to use (or specify the ones used)?

    This was fun to watch. After watching the first time, then reading your description and request for comments, I can offer constructive criticism. I watched it a 2nd time as I didn't get what was happening on the first viewing. Prefacing, I found the vid while searching for reviews of the Sirui, currently on Indiegogo, so that colored my expectations going in (without reading the description first). So, I sort of expected a cutaway to a review of the lens, then realized it wasn't a review.
    Second viewing: I paused the video on the shot of the notebook and looked up the mushroom species, since the scenes imply that the mushroom is a hallucinogenic. The online pictures of the species do not match the drawing, so I double-checked spelling. In any event, the mushroom appears safe to eat as described in the book. So why the hallucinations? Since the dream sequence after having wine also appeared to be influenced with hallucinations (use of effects), perhaps the character is suffering from them generally.
    Criticisms: Was not drawn in to care about the character. There's this book called, "Save the Cat" for writers. When struggling with an idea for audience engagement, the character needs to do something, like, "save the cat." This draws the audience into sympathy for the character, as it's human nature to come to the aid of someone or something in a crisis (even trivial, like getting a cake in time for the birthday party). There's nothing that connects me to the lead character while I'm waiting for the conflict to present. For me, the short story is missing a hook, for which we see conflict and resolution. Whatever the crisis is in the character's mind, it is not presented clear enough to bond to the character and root for her, or otherwise (if she's supposed to be evil) root for her demise.
    Your technical execution is good as others have commented, but my sense is you're looking more at the story aspects. I did enjoy the lapse of time from day into evening. Also enjoyed the setting and sound. The opening scenes were a bit boring (as in a typical, common sequence). Perhaps if she gets called mid-stride to or from the store... and is interrupted, then shows more emotion (disdain, hurry, pain, etc.), changes her gate from slower to faster, or from faster to stopping and thinking (i.e., some change in behavior identifying something important about the call) then we wonder why. As for when the call did happen (gas station scene), there was nothing alerting as to it being out of the ordinary... just a friend making contact.
    All that said, this was a 2 day production, so armchair quarterbacking after the fact is so easy... FWIW. I did see some of your other review videos and always enjoy seeing you and your girlfriend teaming up to produce something fun to watch. 🙂

I didn't use any external plugins, for sure, but since I used to do animations in AE, I always find weird effects to use in my films :D I probably used displacement maps with some random distortion effects. Oh and definitely Turbulent displace, I used that effect on 90% of the clips here!

    I think you challenging yourself to do a short film alone is nuts. You technically did a lot by yourself with basically nothing. After reading the description and seeing your disappointment with it is not fair to yourself. You did so much, much more than any big hollywood director could accomplish by themselves. There is a finite amount of bandwidth that can be had by single person but when you have to split it into so many roles causes you not to be able to express the details of your project. It didnt make TOO much sense, but as a film maker I know where your head is at. Imagine what you could do with 2-4 more people freeing up bandwidth and helping you tell your story?

    • @DreamDuoFilms
      @DreamDuoFilms  Před 2 lety

      Thank you so much for the comment, man! This really warmed up my heart! Yeah, in the filmmaking field doing something like this alone is not only frustrating, but boring as well, never again will I put so much stress on my shoulders to create something like this and will always try to get my hands on a team that will help me out with this thing. I think the hardest part was the audio, I absolutely hate recording audio on spot, rather would hire a sound guy on set because often times I would not concentrate on the visuals themselves, but the audio. And maaaan, I need to see some masterclasses on storytelling, that's where I lack the most skill
