PoDD's lunatic is often seen as the hardest in the series to 1cc... with a high-tier character.
So you can imagine how it's like without a high-tier character.
The real threat in this game are the bosses. Cancelling them out with a level 4 spell is a must strategy.
Yumemi is a beast. Whether she gets hit or not is entirely up to her, as she can dodge pretty much everything. - Hry

Because why not? And back then, spellcards weren't nerfed. They were legitimately overpowered as literal Hell where one single danmaku round has the power to rip apart a shack. Zero restraint back then XD

Bruh the computer straight up *decides* when it gets hit. Like bruh just look at that last hit and tell me it didn’t do that on purpose.
One thing I notice is that ZUN might just have gone a bit overboard when he designed the AI for this game, sure is a starch contrast to the fighting games.

+WishMakers As far as I'm concerned though, AI in Bullet Hell was a novelty at the time PoDD was released (and probably still is!), so ZUN is technically a pioneer of it.
I think the bad AI in PoDD and PoFV is justified by this fact.

Curse of every Touhou player - you can dodge insane amount of bullets, missiles and lasers, but it's allways the one random lonely bullet that hits you, and if it didn't take your last live away, the impending confusion and panic will do the rest.
The joy of PoDD: Whether the AI gets hit or not is entirely up to them.

PoDD lunatic AI is essentially programmed to be hit every now and then in order for it to not be invincible. I’m not sure how this goes for the other levels though
at 8:25 she gets hit by a very clearly telegraphed laser and then seconds later dodges completely indecipherable bullet vomit

Well, I could get past everything without continues on Easy except her. I wasted all my continues on her and still lost. Only thing keeping me from rage quitting was her theme.

Took me ~5 tries no continues but all lives to beat her
Would have been even more difficult if i hadn't played touhou 2 before
Also, the time i beat her, it felt more like i got lucky 'cause went down fast compared to my other tries where she wold never get hit
I was going to say that Yumemi dodges as well after ten minutes as she does in the first ten seconds, and that she only gets hit by the usual suspects (moon bodyslams, boss summon bodyslams, dense spirit clusters, and EX attacks).... but then she ate a -snowball- with -a bomb in stock- to lose the round.
That's unprecedent serious affair right there, sir.

I fucking hate those crosses. Chiyuri is fucking lunatic too, but her Marisa-esque lasers can be managed if you're paying attention. These crosses can potentially corner you and take like a quarter of space from your screen, what the hell???

My guess.. since this is phantasmagoria of "dim dream" those wings on marisa represent her dream to fly without her broom...or her desire to be like mima.

i think the lack of detail (i.e. 98 graphics) is actually what gives it its flair.
Yumemi has such an awesome entrance when activating a Lvl 4 spellcard. I wonder why that hasn't been reused in any form...how dissappointing. :(

Its ridiculous, they will dodge a field absolutely saturated with danmaku, complete with those fast bullets you can barely see flying everywhere. But, they will inexplicably sideswipe something when there is barley anything on screen.
In TH09, I see the AI take a hit from a level 2 attack in the first ten seconds A LOT.
One of touhou's most difficult last bosses...

I hate to ask but in the description you state the characters (some of them anyway) as broken; I figure Chiyuri is because of the second delay where you can't bomb/hyper but that is about all I know about characters being broken. Care to elaborate please? PoDD is one of my favourite games and I hadn't bothered to take notice. Had been hunting for information and all I found (by experience none the less) was Chiyuri and the bomb fiasco.

Think Phantasmagoria of Flower View. The computer's on the right playing Yumemi, the one on the left is the player playing Marisa. This is a PC 98 Touhou game (as in really old, canon questionable touhou game). You only need to beat the computer once, the rest were... continues. I'd recommend playing the very first game, Highly Responsive to Prayers.

Uh, I'm probably going to look like an idiot, but can someone tell me who the player character is? And just how this game works in general? I mean, Marisa loses twice, but she wins once and it counts as a win and I DON'T EVEN KNOW.

The left is the player while the right is the AI.
When the player loose/die they can use "continue" which is basically a restart.
The point of this game is basically like a survival where the last one standing is the winner.
