Special report: Why living on the coast can take years off your life

  • It seems like the perfect lifestyle.
Fresh sea air, no grinding daily commute into work and lower house prices.
But the realty can be somewhat different.
Health inequalities mean people are living 10 years less in some coastal towns.
Issues like addiction, mouldy housing stock, poverty and deprivation all pile pressure on local health facilities.
Adele Robinson spent time in Hastings speaking to those affected by the issues.

It has nothing to do with living on the coast, it has everything to do with poverty, deprivation and the resultant crime, drugs and alcohol problems that come with it. There are many reasons why coastal towns are often more deprived, a big part is likely the fact that many, many jobs are seasonal. Another reason is that coastal towns are often not well connected and within easy reach of major population centres, so they tend not to attract industries like warehousing and manufacturing. The weather also plays a part as things like wetter conditions and higher winds undoubtedly take a toll on buildings making repairs more expensive for both private and social landlords thereby pushing up rents. Coastal towns also, as the report does mention, often attract older people looking to retire who bring their health problems with them, skewing the health figures negatively.
