- The New Orleans Saints have signed former Las Vegas Raiders QB Derek Carr to a four year deal worth upwards of $150M with $100M guaranteed. The New York Jets were amongst the teams interested in Derek Carr leaving Chris Broussard, Nick Wright and Kevin Wildes to ponder if the Jets will go all-in to acquire Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.

As a Saints fan I am very happy that they got Carr, but Nick has a point. At some point they have to tear down the house and start rebuilding and get out of this dead money spiral...
I agree with Nick on the financials but I disagree with it being the reasons the Saints didn't go to the playoffs the past couple seasons. Injury was the number one killer on both sides of the ball to major key players.
I def think now should have been time to fall back and regroup

Nick is absolutely right with his point. The Saints cannot be a sustainable franchise with their antics. They aren’t going to be able to field a talented enough team to compete. This is March, there’s no telling what rosters look like in August and September. Carolina and Atlanta have draft capital and money, something New Orleans doesn’t have either of. The Saints are a likeable team in a lovely city. The players and fans liked Jameis. He deserved to finish out his contract there and the Saints could of use the year to get back on track financially

I think what Nick does not understand is that we were such a joke losing franchise for so long we will do anything to prevent that from happening again after the 15 year Brees and Payton era where we gained so much respect and “taking the medicine” and “build it back up” is a lot easier said than done

I think NO should get rid of Alvin Kamara (he's not what he once was and he's also getting into off field stuff you don't want to deal with) and go with young RBs and keep your WRs in tact for this year (and then dump Michael Thomas after this year). I hear what Nick is saying, but this is a key moment in that awful division where NO can actually win it with Carr. I do think it's fine to get back to being a playoff caliber team again without having to burn it all down.

Nick only has a point on the 25% less to spend IF the Saints didn’t consistently draft well, thus maximize value of rookie deals. Having Olave, Penning, Ruiz, Werner, Taylor, Ellis, plus undrafted guys like Shaheed all on rookie contracts means you can absorb Jameis and others’ dead money.
The salary cap is simply a line in the accounting. If you have a well run team that drafts well and can exploit accounting loopholes, the salary cap practically doesn’t exist.

Overpaid. Dead money and underperformance incoming. The only starting caliber QB not on a rookie deal that's worth what they're being paid is Pat Mahomes. Dak Prescott, Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers and even Josh Allen are all overpaid. Lamar badly also wants to be overpaid but will come up just as small in the postseason as all of these other guys. Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts will soon join Mahomes on the list of QBs that deserve the big contract they get.

Saints have MAGICIANS running their salary cap books so that paper cap does NOT apply to the Saints. as a fan of theirs for years, fans stop worrying about the cap space a long time ago because it doesnt apply to the Saints. to be fair, the Saints BEAT the Eagles last year so having a better signal caller will make them even more dangerous. Dereck Carr is a really good QB and the saints got themselves a player.

carr isnt even worth 20 million a year. what a terrible deal. i dont understand the obsession with such a mediocre QB. been in the league around 10 years, and he has one season where he has over 30 tds. in a passing era where good QBs routinely throw for 30+ TDs, and the really good ones throw 40+, and the best carr can manage is one time with 30+ TDs? his TD/INT ratio is awful and has been at 2:1 for the majority of his career, when people like rodgers or mahomes are putting up 5:1 or better. everyone always wants to point to how bad carrs defenses were, while ignoring the fact that the dude is a turnover machine. kinda hard to play defense when your QB has 10+ more interceptions a year when compared to good QBs. its almost like he was putting his defense in a bad spot in every game with the constant turnovers and inability to sustain TD drives so his defense could rest. even kirk cousins is significantly better than carr, and when kirk cousins is significantly better than you, that means you are pretty mediocre to slightly above average.
