Correction: 3:12 Even with solar glasses you should NEVER look through an unfiltered viewfinder, or other optical devices that have the possibility to magnify the intensity of the sun. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Are you shooting the Total Solar Eclipse? If so...Where will you be?
Edit: one point of clarification, since im getting some questions. You absolutely MUST shoot with a strong enough filter with any type of camera, DSLR, mirrorless, point and shoot, telescopes, anything... And it must go on the FRONT of your lens. I've also been advised to never look through any unfiltered optics even with solar glasses as the optics magnify the intensity of the sun.
Rip in Australia
After this video, I’m convinced I can’t miss this photo opportunity! I’m in Toronto.
@@GrethelPavonNiagara Falls, or Anything east of Port hope is your best bet! 😊
@@AnthonyGugliotta Thank you! I will drive there for sure!
Yes! 4 hr drive to the Dallas TX area 🎉
I love taking photos, but I feel there will be a LOT of people who will not truly experience and enjoy this eclipse for what it is, simply due to they're trying to get photos. Take a picture or two, but remember that there are thousands of better pictures out there to look at. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most, just to experience it and think about it's significance and how these events affected our ancestors since the dawn of time. Just enjoy it.
My thoughts exactly, I like to experience things not just taking pictutes
Yeah, most people's eclipse photos will be as worthless as fireworks or concert videos. ENJOY the experience!
Geez, maybe tone down solar shaming and let people enjoy it the way they want to enjoy it.
The research, execution, and capturing is a part of the of their enjoyment of an eclipse.
We get it, you are above anyone not in the "moment". Perhaps it is not your way .. good. Go away, far .. far .. away.
@@highpraise-highcritic "solar shaming"? Don't be silly. All I'm saying is don't forget to enjoy it. But if you want to play some sort of strange victim card, fill your boots.
You can enjoy something while taking pictures. You can experience something while taking pictures.
using my nifty fifty 😂
😂
lol
I'm coming from the UK to Dallas to see it, just bought a new filter for solar photography. All I need now is clear skies 🤞
Yes! Praying for clear skies 🙈
In Dallas? Good luck buddy
be mindful of the storm clouds passing through at the day of the Eclipse. I am in Austin but it seems it will be the worst, Dallas is better but I will be driving to Frisco as the cloud cover will be 20-40% over there from what it is currently showing. Keep checking the forecast in the coming days just to be safe.
My man I wish you luck. I live in Austin and from what it looks like, there's a huge storm coming this weekend into the week. The sky may already be pitch black the whole day
@@x1928 damn, I just saw that, I'm also in Austin, it's extremely bright right now with no clouds, hopefully the storm pushes itself back like always
I am from Mexico city and me and my family are traveling to Mazatlán (a totality place in Mexico), now the thing was that our airline wanted to cancel the flight (offered us another one to another city and other days) and we made a post "exposing" the airline, after that, they contacted us giving us the flight but with one day scales twice. We hope for clear skies and I am of course bringing my camera.
Good luck on your shots everyone!
ure so wholesome man, love ur energy!
I'm watching this the day before with none of required equipment, not even the glasses 🥲 I mistakenly thought you could only see it if you're on the *total* solar path, didn't realize we're getting a partial eclipse where I am 😩
It’s coming right to us ! Dallas, tx and ‘m watching this hoping to prepare myself catch some once in a lifetime photos
Great video and great tips! Actually answered all my questions about the best way to capture the eclipse. Will be viewing from St. Catharines, Ontario.
Same here!
I’m in Longview, Tx which is just about 10 miles outside of the path of totality, so of course we’re driving to a bit to get right in the path! Looking forward to it!!
Im from Montreal over here! can't wait to experience this
Awesome video man! I’m a relatively seasoned “amateur” photographer but have yet to tackle sun or moon shooting. Got my filter and gonna give it a try today
I'm sad I have no way to get there. But I'm so excited for your results - bangers only!
Seven buddies of mine and myself travelled 1800 miles in 47 hours back in 2017 to catch the eclipse in Tennessee. Absolutely worth it. Heading to Erie for this one.
The thumbnail was too good hahaha! I never thought about capturing the Solar Eclipse, but this was such good advice! Now I just need to get a strong enough ND
PLEASE get a “Solar” rated filter - 16.5 stop ND with UV/IR Cut. It’s not just the light, but the IR that burns. Stay safe!!
thank you for making this video
Hey Anthony, I love your videos and happy to see another Torontonian wanting to see this amazing celestial event as I am, that being said I do need to bring up how looking through the viewfinder on a DSLR is a HUGE NONO even with the ISO glasses!
After talking to experts from the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics (University of Toronto) recently about what you said around 3:18 is what you are never supposed to do, putting anything that could magnify light in front of the ISO glasses like Binoculars, DSLR Viewfinder, sunglasses, etc. These could magnify the light and actually damage the glasses making them useless/cause damage to your eyeballs making it go from great experience to a bad one...
I saw your edit in the pinned comment that you made, but this adds to the clarification.
Cheers
Thanks for clarifying! I'm going to add an annotation into the video! There's been so much information to learn and digest that even today I've been getting more information!
@@AnthonyGugliotta there really is a LOT of information to learn and digest when it comes to any celestial event, I've only been learning about them for the last 3 months and still have a long way to go. Happy to help!
Driving from Detroit to Dallas about 1,700 miles depending on weather. I’ll be checking the weather all the way down to find the best spot weather wise
Thank you for making this video
Great tips

Its kind of magically stronger
What makes your eyes hurt looking at the sun is the infrared, not the UV.
In the moments before totality the sun's tiny crescent is small enough to be easily resolved and focused on by your cornea...so not enough infrared to make you look away but still plenty of uv to cause damage, focused on your retina.
Theres been many cases of people getting little crescent shapes burned into their retinas
I’m using crop sensor cameras with a full frame 300mm (480mm in crop) lens and a 16.5 stop ND filter. I have two cameras with the exact same setup ready to go.
I am in a tiny town named Mannsville, NY, near Watertown, NY! Thousands of people are coming to our area because, yes, we are in the "totality"
Burlington in Vermont, by the lake. Hope to get a close-up series and a wide-angle scenic composite.
Good synopsis of the process and considerations. Like you, I’ve been sucked in to this by You Tube Astro-Nuts!! 😂 So it’s my 1st time as well.
To borrow a phrase, here’s to Clear Skies! 👍🏼🙏🏼🌞
love your videos dude 👍🏻
heading to Cleveland from Vancouver for this!
My city is getting 80-85% coverage and I didn’t get to see the one in 2017 so I’m excited. Just wish I thought of renting a longer lens for it
I can't be there but I can't wait to see the pictures and videos of it!
ill be in Austin Texas, thanks for the tips!
I was in Corvallis, Oregon for 2017- it was amazing!
I have photos of those moon/worm shapes from last eclipse that passed over Tennessee. It was super cool to see in person
The one in 2017? Or the partial one a few months ago?
@@channingboy6456 2017.
I’ll be where I live in Austin, TX! Unfortunately, much of Texas is forecasted to be cloudy and rainy
The eclipse is on my birthday and ever since I found out I’ve been obsessing over shooting it. Can’t wait to shoot it, I’ll be in Texas near Dallas (4hr travel)
Hope you showcase what you capture as well. Good luck!!! 🍀
I'm going to try. I have 3 shoots back to back so the results might come a week or two after! 😊 Good luck down in Texas!
@@AnthonyGugliottathanks, been a photographer for 10years like you but never shot the sun. ☀️ first time and I’m praying for no clouds 🌧️
Im from Mazatlan so I'm quite lucky to be watching the eclipse from here
Come to Durango it'll be great.
such an informative video! sadly won't be able to see or capture this solar eclipse myself
I ordered a solar filter, should be here a few days before the solar eclipse. But I'm still working that day, so ko traveling outside of Toronto for me to snap a shot off. I'm running an R7 with a Sigma 150-600C. I may also dust off my M50 and stick either my Sigma 17-300 f3.5-5.6 or my EF 70-200 for the wider shot.
I am in the 80% range (too busy to go to the totality line) and plan on using a filter over my phone lense to take a picture. Talk about budget photography
I live in Rochester NY. RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE of totally. I'm stoked
I live in Northern Vermont in the center of the totality path. Lucky me 😀 I've got my Sony A7iii, 300mm lens and solar filter ready. Expected clear skies Monday for my area. Fingers crossed. 🤞
I'm in the path of totality. Every hotel room in Syracuse is sold out and downtown was busy at 1130am with tourists.
I will be flying in from LA and planning on Shawnee National Forest, but will fly to anywhere with good weather
I am in Erie, PA, in the path of totality. I am using my Canon R7 with RF100-500 lens. I made my own filter and I am planning to get a few shots of all the phases.
straight through my town in Texas!
Yes , I already arrived at Mazatlan totality!
I will be in Springdale, AR in the Northwest Arkansas area! I won't be in full totality unfortunately, but I'm crazy close to it. I literally bought a new tighter lens and solar filter just for this, so we shall see what happens!
Stupid question, but I’m going to use an ND filter for my iPhone 15 pro max from FreeWell for the solar eclipse in Illinois, which one do you suggest would work?
I'm so ready for this!
I'm in Detroit, I'm driving down to Columbus to see it!
can I use my 24-105 f4 L to take pictures of the solar eclipse, by the way I live in buffalo. I love your videos. your videos are so informative.
Making the drive from Chicago to Indianapolis, only about a 3 hour drive. Should be fun!
Will be in Kingston, On for this! Just trying to find a filter before then 😂
To get mine I used an extra pair of glasses over the lens at 1000mm on a nikon coolpix and it sorta worked.
nice video!
Flew over from germany, staying in Niagara Falls rn
Dallas here!
Will iphone 15 censor get ruined if filming a wide angle video with tiny sun on screen?
Ive read so much and its always conflicting info.
I dont really want to use solar filter cuz it’s so dark you can’t see any landscape or foreground
In Kaufman, TX 45 miles south east of Dallas, TX!!
I'll be in Northern Vermont for the eclipse. Plan to capture timelapse of the ground features with my drone.
good luck with these clouds, im on east coast too and im worried if i can even see the damn eclipse
@@yggip2332 it's supposed to clear up by Monday. Here's hoping!
@@beldavius Yes, expected clear skies up here in Northern Vermont. I'm excited. Good luck on your shots.
I will be up around that area. not too sure exactly where though, I am driving by myself up there. I hope the forecast stays CLEAR!
@@parkercubing3339 I'm also driving from southern New Hampshire that morning. My daughter is in Danville, and they're having almost 3 minutes of totality, so I'll probably head that way.
I live in Buffalo NY. And I am going to attempt to photograph this event. I had no time to practice because of the cloud cover we have had for the past week.
I have no idea what I am doing. But I got to try.
Traveled from SoCal to experience over 4 minutes of totality in Booneville, Arkansas, using my Canon EOS R8 and 7D cameras. Happy shooting!
I know he said don't worry about the geography but can someone please take a shot of it looking up at Niagra falls.
Any welders here bouta use their hoods tomorrow?
YUURRRR
Can I make a lens cover out of the eclipse glasses I have? Or is it not strong enough?
Would using the electronic shutter be the way to go here? I have the R8, but I don’t know if it would have an effect on shooting the eclipse
Bump also curious

Flying to Dallas. Hoping the weather is clear enough so our view isn’t obstructed
I'm looking at ~83% coverage, ordered a sun filter earlier today. Debating on driving closer but I still have to work that day(thankfully remote), like you I wasn't all that interested and didn't make plans for it but last couple of days have been getting more excited about it. Using an A7RV and sony 200-600 G lens. How much coverage would be needed to see a lot of the corona/is it worth going out of my way to be in path of totality? It's a long drive but if the path of totality is really worth it I can probably make it happen.
i would say make it im doing a 4.5hr drive, if its closer def go for it, cloud coverage might get in the way but hey at least you went for it it’ll be a cool memory
Driving down to Dallas from Portland, OR.
Did you end up shooting the eclipse? Would love to see the results.. maybe a follow up vid on your experience? :)
Last minute tip for anyone using a Canon camera, there is a free software for Windows called SET'n'C that allows you to automate the ENTIRE eclipse, allowing you to just have to adjust the tripod and enjoy the show.
I am going to be in the Atlantic Ocean on a Norwegian cruise on the way to Bermudas, using a Canon EOS R5 - RF100-500mm f/4.5 - 7.1 lens, - Canon Extender RF 2x - NISI True Color Pro Nano CPL (77mm >> 82mm) - NISI UV/IR cut ND100000(5.1) 16.6 Stops 82mm.
CELESTRON Solar Eclipse Glasses.
Everything from B&H.
I think I will stack my 2 10 stops ND filters or 6+10 stops ND filter
i might be able to see it partialy where im at
LensIs it ok to mot use a filter when using a wide angle lens (24 mm)
I do aton of astro viewing/photography. I have Celestron NexStar 127SLT (127 is mm across the front element) its like 1500mm I have a solar filiter. I live in a place that more than 90% coverge. yeah gonna be fun
Do you think a SONY ZV E-10 will be good enough to take the solar eclipse?
Im probably gonna drive to vermont. Most likely by Burlington. Anyone have compostiion recommendations?
I'm going to be in Uvalde, Texas
Can I stack two 10 stop ND filter?
From Cleveland 🙌🏻
central indiana under sunny skies
Also… I’d be remiss if I don’t say this…
One point I’ll like to stress is the use of a “Solar” rated filter as opposed to an ND-only one. I know there’s a huge debate on this but consider that a lot of the damage from prolonged solar radiation is due to the IR component, which a plain ND may not reduce sufficiently. NDs are designed for the visible spectrum, primarily. PLEASE get a 16.5 stop with UV/IR Cut OR stack a separate UV/IR-Cut filter with your plain ND.
Bottom line is, as amazing as a once-in-a-lifetime event (for most of us) like a total solar eclipse is, vision is priceless and any solar damage is life-long permanent! Don’t take a chance. Be safe!
EDIT:
The ISO Standard Solar Film does filter visible, UV and IR. The simplest solution may be to use two-sided tape to stick a disk of this in front of an existing clear filter. Cheap, effective, safe.
Niagara Falls 🙌🙌🙌
Cloudy in Rochester NY we are in totality
YouTueb recommends this after the eclipse
I want to photograph the green tailed comet around juptier with the eclipse....
I'm right in the path of totality.
Bro nice video i your all video
I’m currently in Michigan.
gonna be very cloudy in most places btw
I’m in after a photographer and I use a telescope with a big ass sheet of solar film over it attached to my dlsr and also I’m so sad that I’m not gonna be able to see it I am in Arizona
im using 2 9 stop ndfilters
Erie Pennsylvania
Im in Montreal, Canada :)
looks like clear skies.....
This is gonna be stressful!
But considering the high likelihood of clouds, if i mess up the photos, ill just buy the ones on the Internet for my own enjoyment.
Experiencing it is more important!
Live in Niagara Falls but not sure if i want to go to the park with all the people they are estimating to be there for the eclipse...
My totality will last less than 30 seconds, there is no place for error, all this information and charts will help a lot. Thanks
I thought totality took 4 min?
