  • I wasn't expecting to see THIS on this latest Google Maps Adventure, but needless to say, it gave me a pretty good scare!
In this video I try to locate and identify my latest Google Maps find. This in a location that I've never filmed from before and although it's not extremely remote, it does seem a bit unusual for its location. Also, for those who stick around until later in the video, I will show a bonus item that I came across on my way to this location.
Did I find the item? What is it? Come along with me for this latest Google adventure!

The green piece of equipment in the shed was a industrial-grade water pump made by The F. E. Myers & Bro. Company of Ashland, Ohio. The company was founded in 1870. By 1884, they had an extensive factory that covered several city blocks. The company held 125 patents on various pump designs and diverse products such as porch swings, bicycle stands, hay tools, store ladders, door hangers, etc. All of those products, at one time or another, were manufactured and sold by Myers. They are still making pumps today under the Pentair Myers brand. Today they make mostly submersible pumps, sewage pumps, and centrifugal jet pumps. Although now owned by the Pentair corporation, F. E. Myers Co. is still based in Ashland, Ohio, where they have 600 employees.
The pump seen in the video converted rotary motion into reciprocal motion to drive "sucker" rod up and down to operate a cylinder in the bottom of the well. This type of pump could lift water several hundred feet so, if it pumped from the pond, it could have potentially supplied users at a higher elevation. Perhaps the trail has a pipe buried under it?
As a 12" stroke model the pump was the largest size Myers made of the type. Starting in the early In early 1900's Myers began to design, build, and sell electric powered automatic versions. Prior to that, pumps like this would have been powered by internal combustion engines. The electric motors made them more dependable for unmanned usage.

      @rossmacintosh5652 Před 19 dny +34

The water filter and plastic piping seen in the corner of the shed is newer and likely unrelated to the big cast iron piston pump. Seeing that near the pond was that pipe described as a "spout" and the cover with electrical, I think I know what may be going on. The "spout" is actually an air vent for the covered chamber below. It likely has a small electric pump in it that pumps water from the pond up to those plastic pipes & filter in the shed. The other water-related items seen on the ground near the cover are likely associated with a chambered pump. The one with the "Sames Water" cover is for an underground shutoff. (These are commonly known as a 'municipal tap'). The valve is located below the frost level and would be opened or closed from that cover using a long tool. The other thing isn't a "valve" as noted but rather a cleanout. It may be associated with the supply pipe coming in from the pond.
I suspect that after the big piston pump was no longer needed, the smaller system was installed. If the house was relatively close by it could be the water system for the house or some other use close to the shed. I point out that nobody would use the big pump for a single house as the electrical costs would be ridiculous. It must have supplied something that needed much more water

Im my mind, the pump was to provide water to the house. The manhole may have been part of a septic system and that pipe coming up was a gas vent. The roof looks no worse than my 25 year old roof. Take the co-ordinates, figure out what town its in and you can go on GIS maps to determine the property lot number and pull up who owns it. My guess its been empty for no more than 20 years. The moisture in the basement is probably ground water that was controlled by a sump pump. The lack of much water damage upstairs makes me think those upper windows haven't been broken for that long. The lack of animals, bird poop, and other derbis makes me think it was sealed up very well until recently.

I've boight a lot of pre foreclosures..This would appear to be a foreclosed property. Often times when they revert back to the lender, theyll take measures to preserve properties. Board up windows, repair or re roof if the roof is in poor condition..clearly some water damage inside, so the previous roof was shot.. Theyll also winterize toilets and it appears someone has in house, otherwise the tanks would have been full at some point and a freeze would have shattered them. So in my opinion someone has protected the property from further water damages. And that someone is most likely a local bank or lender. Only thing that doesnt point in thst direction is a bank or lender or even the city will normally board up all windows and exterior doorways and not just one window. But... It also, as you moted, apears someone's been squatting in the property. So its possible boards may have been removed. They make for a quick and handy source of firewood if you need heat in a pinch.

That's a lot of work for a tiny pond! If it needed monitoring there is something more going on. I'd look for mining activity or illegal dumping somewhere above that site that contaminated a natural spring or a larger body of water that feeds it. I bet the door would have signage lending more information to the building.
I don't know if the abandonment of the house is related or not because it's location in relation to the pond is not known.

Housing developments in more rural areas that do not have direct connections to pressurized muni water systems will often have "dry hydrants" for fire fighting that contain 10,00 gallons of water in underground tanks. Older farm houses and remote houses would simply have a pond that fire crews could always drop a hose in to fight any fires, and probably also for irrigation.

My speculation on the house. Elderly couple (or individual) retirement house. Had a late remodel and soon after they passed away. Kids, if any, weren't interested in the house. Most of the stuff inside would have been taken out and sold or distributed between any kids.
I live in eastern Colorado in cattle ranch / grain farms territory and as you travel around you can see many abandoned ranch/farm houses, most of them falling apart, from ranch families who grew old, passed away and any kids had already left for the big city. There is a section along I-70, between here and Denver where back in the late 1800s or early 1900s a ranch put in a telephone line linking several ranch houses and a couple of barn facilities where cattle were raised. Some of the wires are still stretched between poles. This would have been a wooden box phone system with the cranks for ringing.

No need to wonder about the empty house or the pond property. Go online and see if the county there has a GIS parcel map (almost every place does) and you can see the history of who/what owned the property, when it changed hands, tax and assessment history, etc. Same for the pond site - if a business, the ownership name may reveal the use type, or there may also be a property description that says what the land was used for.

I'm in Florida, so things might be a little different but usually when you find an abandoned house like that, it turns out to be in probate and family members are fighting over it. Parents die, didn't leave a will and the kids all think it should be theirs. Too bad because the houses usually settle into the ground while the kids fight.
The upgrades are interesting, especially the roof, that's some money. The kids might have been smart enough to get together and put a roof on it before it was too late, even if they are still fighting over it.
I found a beautiful log cabin a few years ago, next to a river, just slowly disintegrating and when I researched the property, it had been in probate for over a decade. Sad.
The other is definitely a pumping station, probably agricultural because it isn't a well but pumping out of a body of water. The filters were probably for silt and sand, not to make it potable.
    Great find!

Black racer snakes. They get really long and scary-looking, and obviously they can move quite fast given their name, which also freaks people out, but they're mostly harmless and quite beneficial in that they keep the local rodent population down. Not poisonous, but it's safe to assume they WILL bite you if you mess with them, and you'll probably get a nasty infection from their teeth that are maybe not quite long enough to be called fangs.
