I really like the quilted journal covers. I use to be a quilter and I am addicted to fabric. I was going to have a yard sale to sell all my fabric because I don' do large quilts anymore. It is to hard on my heart. But I have now changed my mind about selling my fabric after watching your video. TFS
love the fabric . and what a fun he Gayle to make snip stips and you have afther cutting lovie tags and journal cards and yes a great video thanks Gayle
It would be great to make that a 'school' themed journal. Lots of children's writing paper, flashcards, report cards, workbook papers, etc. I hated school and homeschooled my own kids but there must be some people (or teachers) who have fond memories of public school.
Hi Gayle just made my second journal. Have been lurking for about 12 months and started making comments a few monnths ago. Thankyou for the inspiration and down to earth approach. Hugs .
I love watching you make covers. You make it look so easy. You don't muck about, you just go for it and they always turn out beautiful. I like this style with the fabric and batting. I think I am brave enough to give it a try. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Oh my goodness Gayle , I did something so very similar this week- for me I did padded journal covers and I also used Tim Holtz fabric. How fun,! I had been cleaning out things I was hoarding and making myself use them!
Nothing makes me happier than seeing a Gayle A notification!!! I try to save the video to watch right before bedtime, when the pets and hubby are quiet!! 😂🤣 You continue to inspire me daily!! 🥰❤🥰❤🥰 Blessings to you, and your family!
Maybe I should wait till mom and dogs are settled at night! I have a hard time watching in the morning! Mom always wanting something and dogs wanting attention or to be fed! 😫
I got this exact same fat quarter bundle from Modern Quilter in January. Last week I made 3 journal covers out of it. We were working on the same thing pretty much at the same time. I used firm interfacing for my “guts” I didn’t enjoy sewing through it. I’ll try a folder next time. I love how you quilted through yours. Sending big hugs! 😘💜🤗
Thank you for showing how to do this. I had an idea but never saw anyone do it. I wanted to do some. Love the sewing theme material so much might have to get some.
When you tear, you are tearing the straight of grain. When they cut they just cut what they ‘thought’ was straight. Before you use a fabric tear the cut edges so you have straight of grain! 😜 clear as mud!? Love these!
So funny Teresa! I just wrote that explanation out in a way that I hoped made sense, and then saw that you had done a better job😊 Yes, I always tear a small strip off to establish the straight of grain and then measure from there for 2 straight edges 😜 Lovely covers Gayle!!! Take care, Laurel 💖
Lollipop C I’m glad to know this. That’s why when I was trying to tear a strip about an inch and a half wide to make a tie closure it ended up going down to a point by the time I got to the end of the strip, so now it’s tag toppers. 😂 I didn’t know why it went to crooked.
hi & hugs Gayle, i luv all the ephemera pieces you showed at the start! the last one, biggest piece could maybe be a writing board too. what fun covers! i checked the etsy shop-wow-what a selection of fabrics!! tfs
Oh, the Tim Holtz fabrics are so fabulous!!! They’ll make beautiful journal covers and I love the patchwork look so much!!! Some more fun ephemera to embellish!!! Love seeing what you create next. TFS!!! Hugs, Sharon 🌷💜
Our creative side is right brained and our talking, instructional area is left. It's normal that it's hard when you're switching back and forth. It's not your memory. It's just hard. You're great.
Love the Timmy fabric! I have found when doing quilted covers it is easier to stitch the fabric and batting only and then glue the quilting to the envelope. It’s the same way you do quilted pillow tops and wall hangings. Thank you for the “Happy Gayle” videos keeping us entertained and educated during these times of trials.
I don’t have the whatsitcalled.., batting? The in between stuff. I do have some plasticy poofy stuff that was used in a package I received, you know the stuff used to fill a box so what’s inside doesn’t bounce around and/or get scratched. I think that’ll do the trick! Have a good day Gayle ❤️
I just went and fixed up my portable Singer sewing machine. I had the wrong size bobbin in it. Yikes. I made myself a pen holder out of Kraft-Tex. It sews and stamps so well. I love your sewn fabric covers.
I like the idea of doing a lot of covers to just have available. For some reason I am a little scared of covers, so doing them in advance - at least the bare bones - is super exciting to me. I don't have any batting, but I do have a ton of felt squares that I will never use so I think they will make a good sub. TFS, Gayle.
Oh my gosh you enabled me again… lol!!! I had to go find Tim Holtz fabrics… Lol! I love it! Beautiful covers! You are so brilliant, thanks for sharing!!! Big hugs! 😊🤗 stay well and safe! 🐶
Aw Gayle, I knew as soon as you tore that fabric, you had wanted that one part to be the front. 😕. You recovered though and the cover came out great. Idea for you, pull out a couple of the small clips and use them to hold your pocket on. No pins needed. 😊 I kept watching those fingers! You know why 🤣 Great idea about the fabric Tac on the edges! I can tell you’re still struggling a bit with the meds. I am sending you big hugs 🤗 and squishes, and peaceful thoughts. Thanks so much for sharing how you do this.
Love the fabric! I found some in the quilt shop in Hannibal, Mo just before the shut down. But they did not have coordinated fabric! So glad to see you do the video on these. Perfect timing. Thanks for sharing!
HI GAYLE I LOVE HOW YOU MAKE YOUR JOURNALS YOU ARE SO FANTASTIC! I heard you say it’s hard to go through the layers. I was wondering if you have a walking foot on your machine that will make the needle go more smoothly going through layers. Keep up the wonderful work
I made a journal cover somewhat the same but I never thought to glue the edges down. Next time I will do that. Thanks for the great idea. This was fun to follow.
Beautiful, I love the way you see. You said that we could make them better. I know that I can't. I love the sewing fabric. I have the paper pack and am hording it. I am going to try and find it. Thanks so much for entertaining us.
Tim Holtz has some gorgeous fabrics. I could not find the coordinating part for any in the Modern Quilter site. Love your videos and you make me want to do everything that you do!
thanks for sharing the etsy stores you use I have discovered some great ones and been very happy with their products and services I went to the quilt one and got some Tim Holtz quarters and also Gustav Klimt also so just had to get them too. Thanks for sharing all your tips and tricks. I really enjoy watching you
The reason your fabric felt wonky was the cut edge would not be straight, but your tear would be - but you made it look just fab, love theses covers xxx
I've been meaning to try your method of making covers, but didn't have an envelope. I used a piece of card stock and it worked nicely although smaller. I love how you "quilted" the gorgeous TH fabric. Very clever with super impact. I just finished my first attempt at the Slow Stitching process and used that as my cover. It's looking pretty nice if I say so myself! I glued the edges too (using Art Glitter Glue) and just to be sure, I ran a glue stick across the edge. I don't have any stitch fix. Thanks again for a super video! Your work is always beautiful and inspirational!! Take care.
PERFECT TIMING... Thank you, I was just about to start trying to make a quilted journal cover but had no idea were to start. Thank you for a great video 😁
I love the quilting, I might have to try this. I don’t think I already own any fabric that would be conducive to it but I’ll have to look. Haven’t been much for sewer other than shortening pants, because I’m short and I’ve never found a pair pants the right length, and sewing paper. But, what can it hurt, all I would ruin is one piece of fabric, I actually have batting and I probably have envelopes but if I don’t they’re pretty easy to come by so be no huge loss if I screw it up.
Love the cover quilting it adds so much. Just like sewing around tags. I bought a cutter like yours and threw away directions just can't get it to cut will have to look up on internet. Thanks. I finally heard Jimmy Joe loved it. Hugs 💘
Cool! Just an fyi, from our pov, when doing the perimeter of the envelope, it looks like you're going to sew your finger! I kept yelling at you "stop, you're getting too close!" LOL
I love the co-ordinating fabrics. I think that the map one is my faviorite !!! I have an envelope that one of my purchase's came in. It's outside is straw paper and the inside is bubbel wrap. I have split it open to fold like a journal. I'm thinking of making a fabric journal cover with it. I tested it to see how easy it would be to pop the bubbles. It was difficult, so I think it would be fine. What do you think ?
Love the covers, I have just made a soft Poppy cover with a Poppy applique on the front, it was good to see how you made it as I think I got some of the steps wrong.x
Great quilted covers - can't wait to see the journals you make with them - maybe it would be fun to challenge yourself to only use Tim Holtz products in the journal (papers, stamps, dies, inks, ephemera, etc.) - just a thought - Hugs.
I have an old school record book teachers used for keeping grades if you’d like some for the pages. I’m retiring in a couple of years from teaching and think I’ll make one of these for my last couple of years journal. I know you have lots of paper so let me know if you want some. This was fun, and would just get your journal, but you know how that goes. Lol
Love the Tim Holtz fabrics but where did you get the coordinating fabric to go with it? I really enjoy 😉 all your you tube tutorials. They are very informative. Thank you

Gayle, I have a question. I bought a really cute quilt at a thrift store several months ago with the intention of using it to make journal covers and other fun stuff. Maybe instead of elastic bands you could use a strip of fabric, muslin or sari silk wrapped around the spine and tied? Then you could control the tension on the quilted cover. Worth a try anyway. 😁❤️
The fabric is so cool. It's going to be beautiful as a finished project.

How many pages will go into one 🤔
THANKS FOR SHARING 😁
Probably 15 pages as I tend to decorate heavily. You could do 20 to 25 if decorated not as heavily. ❤️

Yes an ivory color. 😁❤️
Gayle, I have a question. I bought a really cute quilt at a thrift store several months ago with the intention of using it to make journal covers and other fun stuff. I cut it up into journal size pieces. My question is: I was thinking about using one of the "covers" as a removable cover. The trouble is I'm not sure how to put the signatures in so that they are removable? The quilt pieces obviously don't have an envelope inside, or anything else to give it stability so it would be difficult to use elastic bands. Any ideas or thoughts on this? If not, I guess I'll have to sew the pages in. Thanks!!! Keep up the good work! I watch you everyday with my morning smoothie!!! Stay safe!! :)
Maybe instead of elastic bands you could use a strip of fabric, muslin or sari silk wrapped around the spine and tied? Then you could control the tension on the quilted cover. Worth a try anyway. 😁❤️
