They did it in an attempt to help Germany out of a horrible depression where even bread cost millions of marks, but they needed a defined enemy to unite them.
Then they got a bit more twisted after blaming the depression and loss of WW1 on the Jews, with Hitler going kookoo and thinking he needed to make a 'perfect aryan race'.
Then a few more 'got a bit more twisted's later, we have what we think of them today.
So I guess that's where the part of protecting his mother came from.

The reason why, is because on September 1st 1939 Nazi Germany attacked Poland, the USSR joined the invasion 1 week later. After Nazi Germany and the USSR both got half of Poland they made promises on paper that they won't attack each other (operation Barbarossa), but in 1941 Nazi Germany attacked the USSR without declaring war.
