  • In this video, Hanger Project founder Kirby Allison takes a trip into Henry Poole The Oldest Bespoke Suit Maker On Savile Row in London. Henry Poole & Co Tailors is known for being one of the oldest and the original tailors on Savile Row, arguably the most famous tailoring street in the world.
    Kirby is joined by Simon Cundey, a 7th generation owner of Henry Poole, who leads him on a tour throughout the entire Savile Row shop and factory, giving a detailed account of the company and its rich history.
    Not content with just being the oldest tailors on Savile Row, Henry Poole is also famous for having invented the Tuxedo. Hear Simon tell the story of how the tuxedo was first designed for the Prince of Wales, before becoming a staple icon throughout gentlemen’s fashion.

      Where are the trouser and waistcoat makers (I’m not talking about the cutters)? I didn’t see them in the basement.
      You rarely see the dress and skirt makers (only applicable to tailors that make women’s wear) shirt makers (only applicable to tailors that make shirts), trouser makers, and waistcoat makers in the tailors’ basements. It’s usually only the coat makers that you see in the tailors’ basements. What’s up with that?

    I didn't realise Henry Poole had an archive of estate livery buttons. That is quite special as there are probably fewer than half a dozen private houses that keep up that tradition outside the Royal household. Some 5-star hotels also commission splendid livery but alas it is becoming rarer.

Where do they source fabrics from, and what are some of the most commonly used types? I wouldn't think it is typical mass produced product. Are there historic makers for that, also?

    Great video and "peek under the tent" to see how Poole operates. All very vintage. Seems like they should use computer to store all the order history, patterns etc. Like a CAD machine, I wonder if technology could help the cutting, fitting of a suit. Still, it's fun to see real history of Saville Row. At 16 Saville Row, there is Norton & Sons which is famous for doing shooting jackets, shooting vests; and I think it was there store used in the Kingsman movie.

    This is amazing! Btw, wonderful outfit. I think I'll wear such an outfit for my wedding. A charcoal suit with a double breasted light gray waistcoat. I'd prefer full morning dress, but here in America I will never get a chance to wear it again, so a charcoal suit with daytime formal accessories will be just perfect. Thanks for the inspiration!

    • @russ9921
      @russ9921 Před 5 lety

      Countalma Kirby does looks smart but apart from very formal weddings the only times you would wear that gear in England these days is at a court hearing if you are a barrister (as we call the lawyers who appear in the high court and appeal courts) or at Ascot races if you swapped the short coat for a long tailcoat. Frankly, his outfit looks a little pretentious, even in London, outside those particular arenas.

    • @countalma9800
      @countalma9800 Před 5 lety

      Russ I've been under the impression that wearing a cutaway morning coat for daytime weddings is still quite standard in the U.K. I'd love to wear full "morning dress" for my wedding, but I know there will hardly ever be an opportunity to wear it again; so, a more practical decision is to buy a nice charcoal suit (I'd go made-to-measure probably) and add a double breasted waistcoat as a nod to traditional formal daywear. I'd never wear a tuxedo during the day! Actually, it seems that suits with contrasting double breasted waistcoats are a popular wedding choice in France these days (though they mostly seem to prefer shades of blue, instead of charcoal gray).

    • @russ9921
      @russ9921 Před 5 lety +1

      Countalma Yes, quite a lot of UK weddings do still have the formality of long cutaway morning coats, though people often hire them for the day. I’d say most weddings I see have people in normal suits.

    • @countalma9800
      @countalma9800 Před 5 lety +1

      Russ A standard suit is perfectly appropriate for a daytime wedding. A tuxedo before 5-6pm is not. Unfortunately in America people wear tuxedos during the day, and those "tuxes" are often cheap hired ones that fit terribly and are worn with awful accessories, such as "matching" shiny ties and waistcoats. It's impossible to even define this "dress code".

      Lounge suits are all the rage now days even for formal wear. Morning suits are really at this point ceremonial so weddings, church, state events and formal college/university events.
      If you do a lot of functions then a morning or Tuxedo maybe the way to go but if you do not do them then I would not suggest them and go with a well cut lounge suit with a nice pattern that can do for any occasion.
      A nice lounge suit can be used for weddings, business or daily wear.

    Dear Kirby
    Just a reminder to keep your hands out of your trouser pockets. It looks weird, disturbs the cut/fit of the trouser, might be perceived as not polite, and on top of that there is the risk that movement of your hands while in the pockets becomes embarrassing!
    Regards

    Beginning at about 17:00 there is an exchange the has both participants looking in the same camera direction. This is not good film making. Can't be changed but should inform future efforts.

    Why Kirby looks nervous in the videos? It seems like he is about to poop in his pants.

    Why 2 buttons if you only ever do up one? Putting an unneeded buttonhole in a great suit seems a little frivolous, doesn’t it? Then again, I don’t have an esteemed tailoring shop with my name on the masthead, so what do I know? What?...........oh, sorry........I thought I heard a voice say “nothing”.
